What is in your safety deposit box belongs to you and the bank has no legal right to take your safety deposit box contents.

MF Global was taking money out of peoples safety deposit boxes without the owners consent or knowledge and using it as their own.

Perhaps a better way for the average guy to understand what the MF Global bankruptcy has exposed is to liken the "Segregated Accounts" to safety deposit boxes in the bank.

You have an account at the bank and you have a safety deposit box (i.e., your segregated account) at the bank. The bank declares bankruptcy. The money in your bank account is frozen but legally after a few days you would be allowed to go to the bank and retrieve the contents of your safety deposit box.
