I wonder how big rush would have been without Niel. They would still have had success...because ged and alex were relentless. I wonder....
I love Niel's lyrics and drumming...but he should be a little more out there. Accept the rock star life. Being a rock star has downfalls...but accept it and give the fans a little in return.
PRETTY COOL TO HERE MORE FROM THE ORIGINAL LINEUP. I do love it that Neil joined, but John had made the band sound good too. Good Rock n Roll!!!! PS: The 1st album is still my favorite....
@TheJetfighter666 you seem upset. I also think Jimmy is over-rated but this work by alex is obviously inspired by Zep. Just look at geddy's vocal style-similar to Robert Plant. Just cuz Zep sucks doesn't mean they didn't influence certain players.
@TadRapidly Sure, i understand, but the guitar world interviews I read said that no on at the bridge was inspired by Steve Hackett's arpeggios, Camera Eye was a tribute to Genesis, the Signals album and the song Vital Signs was inspired by the police, etc.. Working Man had and 2112 had power chords from Pages Four Sticks and Immigrant Song. I was just curious who his number one Favorite Single Guitarist is. Van Halen loved Clapton, Yngwie loved Blackmore, Satriani loved Hendrix, etc..
the guitar solo is phrased similar to between between and behind in someways.....love this song very led zepplin esque (altough i dont like zepplin much)
@Rago2112 rush is way more talented than zep, they just don't get the credit they deserve. put lifeson and page next to each other and page just doesn't compare. long live rush!!!!!!
@fatgreenwoody Wow!! Finally someone agrees with me!! I've said the same thing for years!!! Let's not forget that Rush has sold many more millions that Led Zepplin!!
i really think that rush deserve a spot in the rock & roll hall of fame. it kills me inside when a rap group who has done virtually nothing for rock, get inducted before a band who has done everything for rock and more. pop culture commercialists i guess. fuck'em rush is to good for them any way. RUSH FANS UNITE!!!!! lol
Yeah, Zep is definitely the more popular band, while Rush has always been the ugly stepsister (so to speak).
As for guitarists, I think Page is more technically gifted but I think Lifeson's work is some of the most uniquely satisfying music out there. Page had a tendency to be monochromatic, a general reflection of Zep as a band. Rush has consistently avoided staleness. I dig both bands, but Rush is king in my book.
@jleduc42 ~ i hear you, i saw rush three times back in the day and bought all their early stuff as soon as it was dry. i learned a bunch of it too.
i do have to take issue with your characterization of j.page being "monochromatic", he played pentatonics mostly and wrote some of the most memorable guitar riffs, melodies, and leads in rock history.
but yes, lifeson, lee, and peart are no doubt deserving of all the accolades they receive for their innovation and just rocking your nuts off.
@ragsjames So you base how good a band or act is on album sales? M. Jackson compared to Zep? Guess Jackson is better. Who has more consecutive gold and platinum albums? Guess that would be Rush.
John Rutsey did not QUIT! Geddy and Alex replaced him for lack of interest. Thank GOD they did, Rush would never became what they are today if otherwise. yes that is very bad! Just imagine this, REALLY Just the thought that if the Greatest Drummer on the entire planet, to had not HOOKED UP with Alex & Geddy send a F'n SHIVER down and up my spine!!!!!!!! How do the the new kids say today??? Oh ya OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thats like a nightmare
John Rutsey left the band of his own free will (no pun intended.....okay, yeah it was). He was having health problems related to diabetes and wouldn't have been able to tour with them, so he decided to leave the band. It's okay to be a Neil Peart nut-swinger, but at least acknowledge what the facts really are.

@constantinosbassman ~ you're nuts, rutsey was awesome. if you can't hear that, i feel sorry for you. he didn't want to manage type 1 diabetes on the road. not the kind you can cure by losing weight, the serious one.
Indeed. As a pup (was 13 when this "Rush" was released) I used to obsess on the acoustic, to tunes like "before and after" trying to believe i was Geddy.
This is about as much of a blues-driven rock side of them as I've heard and can see how they carried it with them into "Rush" Heck, that riffage until the vocals come in tickle the edge of Southern Rock and could be something off a Lynyrd Skynyrd or Molly Hatchet album LOL.
Most modern singles sound identical to most other modern singles. Rush turned into some of the most unique and creative musicians out there, so you can't really damn them for this.

Neil can't be expected to write about topics they can't relate to anymore. Find some old MC5 and crank it wilbert...no disrespect intended...
I think it would have prevented Rush from growing as a band musically and lyrically.. Because the influence of Neil has proven to be huge over these decades..RUSH!!..RUSH!!
Thanks for the great early pictures! I loved the cover of Fly By Night when it came out, and I remember looking at it for hours when I was a kid, I just thought it was the coolest thing! Hugh Syme has done such amazing work for them!
Wow - that would have been SOOO different.. Neil writes all the lyrics & "stories" and the chemistry between the 3 is incredible to say the least !! So I imagine they would have been a completely different band.. I doubt they would have been as successful.. I know I wouldn't have liked them as much..
In my opinion the hall of fame is a joke. I wouldn't be surprised if when RUSH does get inducted they don't even bother to show up for it. There by far the greatest Prog Rock band ever and to me there my favorite band ever. I don't think they would have been near as famous without Neil. He is one of the most amazing drummers ever.
I agree that they wouldn't have been as good without Neil, and may not have been as successful, but would have definitely been more mainstream, and because of that, probably would be in the Hall of Fame. In Rutsey's defense, he's still awesome.
The "Rock and Roll" Hall of Fame is the biggest joke there is. There's more great groups that aren't in yet than what are in. Yet every year they put people who aren't even rock and roll in, like Madonna last year. they should change the name to Pop Music Hall of Fame and open a real Rock and Roll HOF somewhere else. Cleveland sucks anyway. LOL
@rodneyracoon I can't wait till they put Lady Gaga and Abba in, maybe under the category of blues rock. HaHa. Hall of Shame, Hall of Shame. Rush has been around 3 times as long as the beatles, 2 times as many albums, etc, Alex and Geddy were playing together 3 years after I want to hold your hand. lol.

Thanks for the great early pictures! I loved the cover of Fly By Night when it came out, and I remember looking at it for hours when I was a kid, I just thought it was the coolest thing! Hugh Syme has done such amazing work for them!

With John Rutsey on drums...5 stars!

I wonder what Rush would have done if Rutsey would have stayed on as drummer?

Probably would've released a few more driving rock albums, and come into their own in a different way.

Wow - that would have been SOOO different.. Neil writes all the lyrics & "stories" and the chemistry between the 3 is incredible to say the least !! So I imagine they would have been a completely different band.. I doubt they would have been as successful.. I know I wouldn't have liked them as much..

They would already be in the hall of fame if Peart didn't come on. The Hall of Fame is fickle like that, and is prejudice towards prog.

LOL

Did you know that they recently added Leonard Cohen as a Hall-of-famer?
Astounding isn't it?

@rodneyracoon I can't wait till they put Lady Gaga and Abba in, maybe under the category of blues rock. HaHa. Hall of Shame, Hall of Shame. Rush has been around 3 times as long as the beatles, 2 times as many albums, etc, Alex and Geddy were playing together 3 years after I want to hold your hand. lol.
