Olá, parabéns gostei muito! Eu também estou tentando tirar no piano esta musica, porém não sou profissional. Se tiver alguma dica no que posso melhorar, se puder escrever para mim, me avise, por gentileza! Michel Nader - Sao Paulo, Brazil!
@bentecho Thank you! On these old videos, I used a camcorder and cd player only to record sound - so needed to be quieter - hence the Flix Stix.
Have a look at my more recent videos (including a much better version of Every Little Thing She Does), where I use wooden sticks and my Roland TD20-KX. I think you will like that video more :-)
@SonnyBurnett2008 Glad you enjoyed it! Er, but if you look at my more recent cover of this, done on my Roland kit, I think you will find it far better, and also much more entertaining - I won't spoil the surprise, but you will enjoy the end :-)
@BLaZe071775 Ha! Ha! It is certainly not easy, but to be honest I find them all frighteningly difficult to do. Walking On The Moon is outrageous, but for me, the one I simply can't do is Driven To Tears - cannot get from verse to chorus without making a horrible mess!!!!
Ha! Possibly so, but I find almost every single one of his tracks to be 'deceptive' and hard!
You might like to have a look at my cover of 'One World' though :-) It is on my 'Police' playlists, and is certainly a popular video! I posted two vids, 'cos I could not quite decide which one to post - neither of them was spot on, funnily enough!!!
Stewart Copeland is a percussion genius. He is the first drummer I introduced to my son when he took up drumming 4 years ago. I can certainly appreciate the work you have put into these covers. Good job.
I bet if you work hard on that accenting in the beginning you can get it. Probably need really light sticks. But yeah, you're almost there! It's just the very subtle stuff now (not that that's easy!). Cheers.
That is very high praise, once again, my friend. Yes, I suspect light, wooden sticks would help - but as you say, dealing with the subtle stuff of Copeland is still way difficult and a long journey of learning - its taken me 35 years to get this far, so I guess I'll be 70 by the time I get some of the subtle stuff down :-C
Yes, the accents in the verses are very tricky, and I agree with you. I have tried to play accents, semi-randomly (!) but i can't get any where near the God that is Copeland!
Hey, thank you! First time someone said my videos made 'em cry lol !
I had to re-watch this just to see what you are talking about at 2'40. It's a long while since I posted this vid, and yes, the whole thing was bloody tricky. The bit at 2'40 was my attempt at getting a form of sticking that seemed to kind of replicate the sounds we can all hear coming from the wonderful Copeland. As I sit here watching myself do this, though, I am not sure what I did!!! It was semi improvised.
stewart copeland is the best hi-hat player ever. it is very hard to copy his style no matter how good you are. you have done a good job though. your rim taps sound werid.
I have never tried Omegaman - I will have to have another listen to recall what it is like, and to work out whether I am capable of it - there are plenty of Police tracks that I just cannot do at all! Mr. Copeland is a God.
Watching this reminded me of another request...How about "When The World Is Running Down (You Make The Best Of What's Still Around)?" But great job on "Every Little Thing...!"
nicely played man. I liked your comment below about playing what you hear thats all I do, I have no clue how to read music, I just play and try and establish a feel, but this sounds great!
Emmm... Are you playing in the rythm 3x4 explained in a documental by Copeland?
In a rythm of 4/4, using the reggae rythm, the 3rd hit falls at same time snare and bass drum. I saw you did it snare and bass drum at same time, but i have the doubt if you does it in the 3rd or 4th hit.
I have no idea - I have not seen the document you are talking about and I can't read music. I am just playing what I hear. Other than that, I have to say I am not sure I understand the question.
Copeland plays the ride like no one else on the planet - I agree. I love the way he moves the ride hits around, whilst also messing with the bass drum pattern. This track is a great example of him doing that!
I started aged 8, never had lessons, I'm now 43. Er, so that's 35 years!
I have been playing along to Police songs ever since they came out. Admittedly, this was one I could not do for a long time, because it is too fast and furious! It is only for this YouTube video that I really sorted out the detail. It's a wonderful piece of drumming by Stewart, as usual!
Drumming is something you never ever stop learning.............!
Mostly Pearl Export - got the basic 5pc kit in 1986. Added cheap Ebay 8" and 10" toms a couple years ago. Cymbals are all zildjians, some from 1986 (15" paper thin crash and horrible 22" ride) and rest are more recent A custom splash and crash, and a K mini china. Snare is Chad Smith signature, also off Ebay!
You are not the first person to ask for this. I started listening to it properly a few days ago, and have started trying to play it. It is AWESOME! Never really noticed before. Cannot stop myself practising it, even though I am supposed to be working on other things at the 'mo.
Anyway, as soon as I have done Don't Stand So Close To Me, and another Genesis cover, I will be working on Murder. I absolutely GOT to get that one down - it's brilliant Copeland magic.
More Police covers are on the way, I promise. Not sure if I can play 'No Time This Time' - isn't that the stupidly fast one? I always get this one confused with 'Contact'. One of them at least is just impossible to copy! I will go and check.
Hello, and thanks. Bury the beater - not sure what you mean. Do you mean I am hitting the bass drum too hard, so why didn't the bass head break? Or are you saying I played it too soft? Or did you mean that since Copeland is famous for breaking bass pedals, I should have done so too? Or have I totally missed the point??!!
haha no you're cool dude. i just noticed most people in between bass hits keep the beater rested on the bass head, at least i do anyhow. either way, i think you did a solid job. copeland is a monster, plain and simple.
Funnily enough, I always figured it to be a bad habit to keep the beater pressed against the head between hits - i trained myself to stop doing it a few years back!
nice... but I don`t like your cimbals.... anyway, I think the performance is great... i think it would be really great if we could hear the music a little bit louder... anyway, i like your vids!
Great stuff, starting to watch your Police and Genesis vids, If you have time could you maybe do "Voices In My Head" or "Man In A Suitcase" two of my favourite Copeland gems!! Anyways keep up the good work.Cheers
Thank you! Have a look at my channel, I have listed all the stuff I'm planning to post. 'Voices' is one of them, though it is a 'mare to cover (a subtle but gorgeous groove). This weekend I am trying for 'One World', but I am not sure if I have memorised it enough yet! Genesis Down & Out also getting posted this weekend.
Hi. I still think it's Stewart's usual snare, cranked up tight, and hit as hard as hell (he likes to hit everything real hard!). But I could be wrong......
Oh, one more thing. I don't play rim hits on the snare drum. I use a GOOD wood block (LP $35.) or the smallest sweetest chrome cow bell instead. There is a special way to hit a cow bell too. You mount it rather high up so you hit it on the top front edge to make it pop. It really chews up drum sticks, but like broken strings on a guitar, it's a concequence of playing and can't be helped.
Ah ha! What a good idea! This would probably make Walking On The Moon a load easier, 'cos the movement required from rimshot back up to hi-hat for the triplets Stuart plays are a 'mare to do (I am working on this track for a post in near future!). If I cannot resolve this, and my one handed triplets are not good enough, maybe I should buy a cowbell / woodblock! Problem is, does that mean I would be cheating?!
I must admit, this was fabulous. But pink spaghetti sticks? Oooooooo..... I use the wooden ones. They sound 10 times better on the Hi-Hat. Plus I cut the band off after the handle because I want them to fan out like brushes....but better.
One more thing that I really liked is your versatility. You you play all your kit at a good pace without speed rolling around smashing on one crash cymble for maximun noise. Your hits are right on and you don't try to over drum the song. Very, very good.
Hey, thank you very much for that! That is high praise indeed. The pink is just to assist on the vid - letting people see the sticks move move. That's all! I used wooden flixsticks on my Manu Katche cover - they do cut through nicely, I agree.
I see someone hates this vid though, 'cos I seem to have a 1 star rating! Seems a little harsh to me, but there you go! Oh well.
Don't worry about that. It's more of a popularity thing. It is deffinately not a reflection of your ability. You and I both know that drums are one of the few music instuments that people don't appreciate being played alone. Therefor there are very few people that appreciate drumming at all! And drummers don't have the best reputation either, lol. Me included, lol.
Hello, congratulations really enjoyed it! I'm also trying to get this song on the piano, but I'm not professional. If you have any tips on what I can improve, if you can write to me, let me know, please! Michel Nader - Sao Paulo, Brazil!

Hi. I still think it's Stewart's usual snare, cranked up tight, and hit as hard as hell (he likes to hit everything real hard!). But I could be wrong......

nice job joux! just wonderin, when te police recorded this song did stuart play a steel drum?

Thank you! Steel drum? It sounds like Stuart's usual snare sound to me, but I could be wrong. Not sure if this answers your question!
