This is what got me into the hobby back in 1987 I was 8 years old and I remember my dad comming home with 2 kits! we ran them on Futuba Magnum Jr Tx, I think the batteries were all of 6 cell 1900 mah but I was hooked then as I am still to this day. :-)
Awesome video!!! Got one back in 1987 as an X-MAS Gift and recently gave it a much needed tuneup; works and runs fine...Tamiya still the best in R/C!!!!
That's funny, I had a Blackfoot and a Clod Buster and wanted to get the Lunch Box but never did. I always liked it though. A friend of mine had one. The clod buster was awesome and so was the black foot. The black foot hauled ass though. I forget the name, but it had the optional gold something?? motor. I think that's right? It was the faster available motor though. I miss those trucks!
I just looked it up... I was close, it's called the .540 "Technigold Motor" I don't know what the regular .540 was like, but this thing made the black foot really haul ass like I was saying before... Which motor did your black foot have?
Great video! These old Tamiya videos make me feel like a kid again. I'm getting back into RC cars. I lost interest back in the mid 90s. It's great to see that Tamiya still sells some of their classics. I'm itching to get a Lunchbox soon. Hopefully, Tamiya will re-release the original Clod Buster. I don't care for the Super ClodBuster. What would be nice is if they do what they did with the Avante and make improvements on the original while keeping the classic look.
I use just the axels and built two custom wood frame versions of this truck. The wood frames started as a joke that i tought would brake after the first big air jump I hit it surprised me after flying the truck out of the back of my truck bed. It took the landing and kept going.. I'm currently working on two trucks like this I have a custom made grave digger which has a video on here and a early 50's chevy pick-up which is not yet completed but will be hopefully by mid 2011...
I say so what if its not fast. Real monster trucks are not that fast they are just power houses. The Clodbuster is made mainly just to have fun with!!! If you want a fast RC vehicle get something like a gas powered T maxx or the like.
You can use 6 D rechargable batteries. Put 3 in the front and three in the back. They fit perfect, all you have to do is wire them together and add a battery plug to it. It takes about an hour to charge, but runs for about an hout and a half. I had an original issue clod and this setup worked perfect.
Tamiya race pack for good perfmance is right, you can also get simple 3000+MAH batterys. I know lipo would be cool but it would just destroy the old-school purpose.
cool! i like how he did a full detail about the truck fron inside out. i used to have an rc nascar that had the same speed control setup that was controlled by a servo. i miss that car. i had it up till 2000. left it behind when i moved.
My father bought my brother and I one for Christmas. It was awesome. One of my favorite presents of all time. I still have mine in perfect condition. Would anyone like to buy it?
i had 3 batterries in mine. it was awsome. i could charge them up and be driving for almost an hour. it had the stick type in the center then one on the front and one on the back at 2:15 you see where i put them. it made the truck heavy as hell and acted like a real monster truck.
You can get them on a shirt. I know there is a place on eBay that sells high quality shirt/sweatshirts with the Clod Buster dirt chunk breaking. It is really cool.
I just love this video. This is my absoluste favorite truck. I have kie 6. Only 2 are bone stock, but I always run them and have a blast. I am glad ( may sound cheesy) to have been around to buy my own way back in the 80's and own a piece of rc history
Doesn`t sound cheesy at all. I still remember when my dad bought me a Varicom Big Grizzly back in the 80`s. We went to that old store in town and got it. Not some fancy Toys r Us but a little shop ran by an older guy. That brings back memories. Really miss those times.
@1996siveradoman I just bought my first Clod Buster used off ebay . I always wanted one since the 80's. I can't wait to do some upgrades and do some work on it..
Wow this brings back memories. I actually havve a 87 clod, and another on my desk im working on itson a clodzilla chassis. The clod started the monster truck trend didnt it? I cant recall if it was first or not, but it is certainly one the most memorable trucks ever
I was thinking the same thing. At least it has to be up there with the most sales. I would love to see the figures. I'm not sure if the Hornet still is the best selling of all time. I want to get one but my wallet said no!
WOW! I seen this video (& the others you have) years & years ago while at a model show!.
Ive got 2 vintage clodbusters, one from 1987 & the other from 1989, Both of them are fully working!.. One with very fast Trinity matched madness 16t motors in it! & the other with stock 540's in it.
im like onlyy 11 since i was 8 ive been wanting a tamiya drifting car for like $94 i got a zip zap, a jada, a micro t. i saved up my money plus the 3oo from the energy relif and bought a mini z 4wd subaru. Now i WILL buy a midnight pumpkin
DUDE!!! Thank you for posting this! I wanted one of these so bad when I was like 10 years old but I never got one. I just recently found out that Tamiya still makes this model. I thought it had been completely discontinued. Now that I know that it is still in production I just have to have one. Damn, how the years have passed.
i had the exact same clod buster as this. My dad gave it to me when i was about 5 or 6 and i sold it when i was 10 for like 100$ I wish i would have kept it...like seeing some of the RC trucks now holy they've came alone way. I wish I would have kept it :(
sup nice vid on the clodbuster, good to see a true rc classic never dies.. I'm currently working on a custom chassi for my clod it's not much just some aluminum shelf rails and the bottom of the tube chassi and some ESP shock mounts with parma body mounts. It's going to be molded after Grave Digger 19. I'll most likely post videos of it soon....
Probably 20 years ago this was my first serious R/C. Regrettably it was expensive to maintain and costly when it broke (tub chassis had lots of faults) Not to mention I didn't know about threalock until I lost 1,000 screws but heck I learned alot on it as a young teen. My friends blackfoot wa fast and ran longer...a neighbor near us got hooked and bought a midnight pumpkin! When those cars stalled...I profited off their mistake by stompin all over them. Sloppy handling truck but what fun!
I have a Bullhead too, though it is currently in parts... I have D-Cell sized battery packs that extend run time to thirty minutes. I think I will get this truck running again for my three-year-old nephew to see.
Got it running after about ten hours of searching around and tinkering... Was running great until my idiot friend backed it into a fence... Now the rear gearbox is clicking and I bet some teeth are busted in there. Maybe it is time to do some upgrading, but this truck is great fun stock. I love the bounce.
The Super Clod is the same as the original. They probably make good money selingthem still because of all the mods out there. You can make some sick trucks. Check out JPS, Innerbecrew, etc.
I used to have a Clod and tricked it out with a nice Bigfoot body. I started the two-wheel truck class in our area and dominated it first with a Blackfoot, then a RC-10 Truck conversion then a JRX-T. Then I started the 4X4 class with my Clod. I love the background music on this video.
I still have my Clod buster! Just got finished getting it ready to take a few monster runs! I remember the Blackfoot!! That was the best "truck for the buck" of its time. I had the most fun with that truck; out of the box that thing flew! It had a few problems , especially with the rear driveline, but it still was awesome! Do you still have the Blackfoot?
I think what EJRocky have is the Tamiya Clodbuster QD (Quick Drive) series. An entry level RTR R/C fleet of tamiya. They sometimes pop-up on ebay used or NIB. Very rare item.
I agree, Clod are one of the best R/C trucks of all time! Clod rulez!!!
So that's a proper Clod? What's mine then? It has the ClodBuster body, but only one shock per wheel and 2WD. Plus it has one of those big bullbars on the front. Help, anyone?
Possibly. I couldn't see it well enough. If it's any help, it has no four wheel steering and it's RWD. Plus it says "Tamiya Quickdrive" on the top of the chassis if you take the body off. Confuses me that it has the Clod body, yet it's much smaller. I really don't know... at least it's still an RC truck! ;)
Quickdrive says it all. The Quickdrive models were smaller, cheaper and allready built from the factory. The Quickdrive Clod and the normal Clod are completely different.
