Best tribute to Guy Clark is Emmylou introducing her version of 'New Cut Road' on her Quarter Moon album. She talks about them being old friends, and how she wishes she's been the first one to record 'New Cut Road'. Well, her appreciation of her old friend & his awesome song are both evident! He is a true troubadour as is Emmy. It's a lucky world for us to have such amazing music, from such talented folks. :)
I grew up in the country and now live in town. this song makes me want to do that. I hate driving the so cal freeways. Too many people too damn close to each other.
Between this guy, Jerry Jeff, Townes, and Rodney Crowell Houston was home to some of the greatest singer song writers of the second half of the last century. Guy takes a back seat to no one.
who is the one idiot who thinks Guy Clark sucks, i'm not sure if he wrote this song or not, Jerry Jeff Walker does it too & they.re good friends. either would cover the other's song.
I can sure ID w/this song. In the Navy we rented from the gvmt 3 different homes on freeway right of ways. Norwalk, Compton and Long Beach. I got out in '67 so we could skadaddle to Seattle up that road in a cloud of smoke.

Great version of a great song. I've been playing it forever. I think I may have been doing it before it was copywritten. I have known and watched Guy since Sand Mountain on Richmond. My old friend Harriet played with his wife Suzanne in a group when both were still in high school. It was made to be duo-ed with a fiddle.
get yourself a hold of "HEARTWORN HIGHWAYS" DVD there is will you WILL be affected by this song...never was much of a country music fan...but this Video took ta-hold of me. These guys not only perform their own songs...they in turn know each others songs. "TIGHT" CONSISE" SH*T...the casual atmosphere...is throughout...right up to the finish, when the imbibing of alcohol is evident...nevertheless you'll see smiles arrive as they start to sing silent night. can't praise this video enuf
I can still remember the first time I heard this song (by Jerry Jeff I think) it was at a friends house in Calgary, Canada, maybe 1977. It's still as fresh as it was back then. A good song, is a good song. To put in in perspective, I've forgotten thousands of new country songs. Thanks Guy.
@safeandsound100 You are so right. People confuse hits with music that will be remembered. These guys have lived life and it comes through in their music.
I never "felt" this song until I heard Guy sing it while I was living in Dallas of all places. "adios to all this concrete, gotta find me some dirt road backstreets" made me want to go home to rural Arkansas so bad.
@ilgarauchut These guys (Jerry Jeff, Guy Clark) were made for on the spot performance. You can listen to them do the same song 15 times and each one will be different. Be here now.
I`ve been watchin Guy Clark videos here on youtube, the man is an incredible songwriter & musician. I recently bought Heartworn highways which introduced me to Guy`s music more..
Thanks for posting ....great tune/performance by Guy..... this rendition with Stuart Duncan on fiddle as well as all the tracks on the "Live from Austin TX" CD make for great listening ...the bowed bass viol (Edger Myer) adds a full spectrum of sound.
I was driving behind you ghostweiner the night you hit and killed them two young honor students, who had both just been accepted to Princeton Commerce University in East Texas. I remember holding the one in my arms and all he could say was, (tell that trucker I am sorry)
And Ghostweiner I also recall seeing you leaning down while driving as if you were reaching for a cell phone because your parents were calling
This is a song I use to play on all those runs across Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, and Arkansas... I use to sing "if I could just get of of this L.A. Freeway," I was actually singing it the night I hit and killed two brothers / honors students in a dense fog... I still hear that one kid screaming his dead brothers name only second before he too died out in DeltaCo.,Texas... This song brings up a lot of memories of my trucking days....
There are only 3 songs in the whole world that a line in the song makes me cry no matter how many times I hear it. This song is one of them, with "Oh my lady, now don't you cry hey." (Susana in Guy's song). One of my favorite songs ever.

See, that's why country music was so wonderful. Humorous yet dark.

I think that he and his wife wrote this song. Biggest hit was by Jerry Jeff Walker!
She gets very little recognition, except if you go see him live, then he credits her for quite a bit!

Really nice. As much as I love JJW's version, this is as good as it gets. Perhaps because Guy wrote it.
