To add another note, think of the way Walter Cronkite reasoned with grammatical, spelling errors...the man knew not to look the unprofessional by simply going along with a plan even while picking up the obvious mistakes. If you doubt me, research it. Well back in the 60s, he literally informed his superior of his refusal to read a prompt due to its incorrectness. It's a sign of a professional when they maintain that integrity to not sound/look foolish.

The reason Quayle told him to put the E on the end is because the spelling teacher gave Quayle misspelled cue cards. . For years I didn't believe it but the uncut news feed of this event shows it. Later Quayle turned the card to the pool reporters and showed them the card spelled wrong. Now what's funny is that some of the reporters can be heard telling Quayle that " NO, the card is right" Even they didn't know. Later someone checked the cards and found more misspelled cards

@Shinzura exactly. Palin clearly does not get separation of powers. An executive never "Gets in to make policy changes" in the legislature. It's one branch only in D.C.

Other duties of the VP: Sit on the NSC and provide advice if the POTUS wants it (normally they do not since the National Security Advisor is the chief advisor of the NSC), greet foreign dignitaries at the airport, be there in case something happens to the POTUS, go overseas to push for America (not the same as creating policy)

what's wrong with it is that she totally dropped the ball...the VP has NO legislative authority at all. The only thing they do in the Senate is break a tie vote. Her insisting they "Get in there to make policy changes" is as inaccurate as they come. The VP's duties are clear when it comes to the Senate-preside over it but only break a tie vote...they cannot be legislators (per what she's implying) on account of how that would violate the separation of powers doctrine.

The media never reported the Dan Quayle Potato event correctly . The uncut video showed Quayle showing a misspelled cue card to the reporters after the event had ended. The cue cards were printed by the spelling teacher at the school. So the spelling teacher spelled it wrong. Also, this kid ,William Figueroa, dropped out of this New Jersey school . He now works at a Walmart .

Numerous sources (including Wikipedia and Ann Compton of ABC News) confirm that Quayle was handed a card by the school... a card written by the school's spelling teacher... with potatoe as the spelling. I don't remember any of the contemporaneous news reports providing that incredibly important fact. Ironic that on this board, I have seen sympathetic posters give Obama a "teleprompter" excuse for his corpse-man gaffe... as if he normally gets the "hard" words spelled for him phonetically.

Let's put it this way-if the school card said "Dan, go jump off a bridge" does that mean he should do it? Absolutely not. Actually, they've been trying to increase the Vice-President's responsibility over the last couple of years. With the exception of taking over if the president dies, the Vice-President's only major duty is residing over the Senate. I'm not sure, but I think it was James Madison who called it one of the most useless positions in the government.

There is actually some precedent for her notion; the VP is 'president of the Senate' (hence the title, 'president pro tempore' or 'temporary president') and used to be more active there. The VP office was located in Congress up until around the middle of the last century. Palin has such little respect for the usual professional boundaries that I wouldn't be surprised if she decided to play 'maverick' and try to 'get in there with the senators.'

The senators would not tolerate that. The VP may have presided over the Senate but they were never really active. It was largely a do-nothing job for years and quite often ignored by the president, which changed in the latter half of the 20th century.
