How long did it take to build? Who exactly built it? Who designed, and over-saw the construction, and who did the actual work of lifting and placing the stones? Were they slaves, or paid workers? Even if they were slaves they would have to be fed. How many men, for how long?

Awesome architecture! Definately want to visit the castle, but since it is in Syria I suppose it is not very safe for Westerners.
