also, it only happens under load, at a constant rpm of any speed it is not present, only when rpm's are going up quickly(like reving lightly in neut. or starting in first. hardly noticible in second, not present(or at least audible) in 3-5 gears. i'm befuddled, guess i don't know enough about the inner workings to know if it's a wrist pin or just valve train noise.
not the injectors. i put a stethoscope up to them it's not coming from there, their noise is different. i'll check again though just to be sure, this sound has been there a year now, so not a rod bearing. still most prevalent when it's cold outside, but maybe just because the frame is cold and transmits more noise.
Mine does the same thing when cold, and its not the belt tensioner. I've got new tensioner and all idlers. Mine is an internal engine noise. The noise also gets louder when you're accelerating and taking off when cold.
Is it the noise you hear just for a moment right before the motor revs? If so my 04 does the same thing when cold....

My guess is the belt tensioner. My STi made a similar sound with the same behavior (sometimes it is there, sometimes it isn't)
