@bazookataj 2003 was the date ... and that was Lewis vs Vitali which aired on HBO and got 7 million viewers average ...that's a channel with only 28 million subscribers as opposed to FOX who offer unlimited free access to all 307 million Americans. If Pacquiao and Mayweather fought in 2009 they could have an epic trilogy that will rake a record breaking 500 million or 1 Billion in PPV and it will also bring back interest to boxing again but because of their greed the fight of the century will never happen.

Not only that Lesnar their top PPV star was sidelined all year as was the Heavyweight champion Cain who ended up fighting on free TV (Fox.) Dan Henderson, Franky Edgar & Bones Jones are huge MMA stars from USA. Japans fighters where bought out by UFC who is now doing a PPV event in Japan in 2012. UFC starts it's 7 year deal with Fox/FX networks starting January.

Fact is, its really strange to see PPV numbers so bad this year for all events. If its just this year who knows but the fact is, a drop of 50% is pretty big and i bet Dana White is scratching his head for sure. MMA is not an established sport yet (like boxing, NFL etc). It certainly can be, hopefully it will.
@presario126 Bernard Hopkins vs Chad Dawson did about 40,000 buys which was for an actual title. Anything under 100k is considered a dismal failure on PPV. Diaz & Condit will be fighting for the interim welterweight title until GSP is healthy. UFC had to cancel over 10 main events this year because of injuries, I am sure Lesnar vs Overeem event will do better than 1 million buys. UFC is going threw a transitional period, ending relations with spike TV this month to move to Fox/FX.

But, say 2 Pac fights + 1 May fight + 1 cotto fight ea/year and boxing still beats UFC in the states in PPV´s.

He's never taken an easy fight, every guy he fought in UFC has been tough as hell. He's a big guy, he destroyed Min-Soo Kim in his MMA debut & everyone after wanted to see him fight the best.

Ray Mercer couldn't even take more than a single kick from Remy Bonjasky. Vitali Klitschko was knocked out twice at kickboxing (head kick.out cold in 93 by Reid, & in 95 Van Roosmalen knocked him down with low kicks and ko'd him with a head kick.) All athletes excel differently among all of the combat sports & all the sports require specialized training.

@bazookataj 2003 was the date ... and that was Lewis vs Vitali which aired on HBO and got 7 million viewers average ...that's a channel with only 28 million subscribers as opposed to FOX who offer unlimited free access to all 307 million Americans. Not a good comparison. UFC on FOX couldn't even beat boxing's average even though they were on a much smaller network. That's sad. Now these FOX 2 ratings are even lower again.

MMA has stagnated, PPV numbers are down 50%. How is that for the fastest growing sport in the world? No major star in the US besides Brock L and he has what, 1-2 fights left before retirement? Also, the markets in Europe, its still underground here most people dont know what MMA is and it doesnt get any better. In Japan, they cannot sell a MMA event any longer (just like K1). Boxing have survived its up and downs many times during history. Question, will MMA/UFC survive its first bad episode?

@presario126 Well they did have to cancled 10 main events at least this year so it ideally wasn't the best year for them. Not only that Lesnar their top PPV star was sidelined all year as was the Heavyweight champion Cain who ended up fighting on free TV (Fox.) Dan Henderson, Franky Edgar & Bones Jones are huge MMA stars from USA. Japans fighters where bought out by UFC who is now doing a PPV event in Japan in 2012. UFC starts it's 7 year deal with Fox/FX networks starting January.

Fact is, its really strange to see PPV numbers so bad this year for all events. If its just this year who knows but the fact is, a drop of 50% is pretty big and i bet Dana White is scratching his head for sure. MMA is not an established sport yet (like boxing, NFL etc). It certainly can be, hopefully it will.

@presario126 Bernard Hopkins vs Chad Dawson did about 40,000 buys which was for an actual title. Anything under 100k is considered a dismal failure on PPV. Diaz & Condit will be fighting for the interim welterweight title until GSP is healthy. UFC had to cancel over 10 main events this year because of injuries, I am sure Lesnar vs Overeem event will do better than 1 million buys. UFC is going threw a transitional period, ending relations with spike TV this month to move to Fox/FX.

@Immortalsyn83:40,000 for the Hop fight shows you why it shouldnt be on PPV in the first place (as everyone knew). The Jones Hopkins fight did only 90,000 i believe. Hop isnt a draw. Boxing in the US does very poor currently, but in Canada, Mexico, UK, Germany etc it does excellent! Boxing is a world wide sport (unlike MMA) thats why it can survive its low´s every time. But, say 2 Pac fights + 1 May fight + 1 cotto fight ea/year and boxing still beats UFC in the states in PPV´s.

MMA is huge in candida, & is growing very quickly in Australia / UK. Asia & Brazil have always been hot spots for MMA. UFC has events scheduled for Japan, Brazil & Australia for the beginning of next year. Lesnar is the biggest draw in UFC & has been injured all year, GSP's 1 fight this year did 800k buys. Ban's lifted = bigger $ for fighters.

Hopefully, both MMA and Boxing will show 90% of the fights on network television and save the biggest fights as PPV´s only. I think boxing and mma will do fine at the same time. Advertisers have shown fear backing UFC due to its violence, and there are still states in america where the sport is banned.

@bigandyd Lesnar came in asking for the best competition in the sport much like James Toney, unfortunately Toney for all his boxing prowess couldn't land a single punch on a guy 5 years older on the verge of retirement. MMA isn't like boxing, if someone is a good fighter they don't make them wait a century to fight a champion. Many guys in MMA where champions at their primary skill set as Lesnar was 2000 NCAA wrestling champion, & his next opponent is Alistair Overeem who is a K-1 champion.

@bigandyd Lesnar started competing in MMA in 2007 which was only seven years after he left college. Lesnar put in the work & beat some of the best in the sport. However he couldn't defend his title against another very good wrestler who had a good ground game & better stand up. He's never taken an easy fight, every guy he fought in UFC has been tough as hell. He's a big guy, he destroyed Min-Soo Kim in his MMA debut & everyone after wanted to see him fight the best.

@bigandyd UFC pays more than kickboxing which is why Reem is fighting Lesnar Dec 30th. I've seen boxers get destroyed in K-1 many times... Ray Mercer couldn't even take more than a single kick from Remy Bonjasky. Vitali Klitschko was knocked out twice at kickboxing (head kick.out cold in 93 by Reid, & in 95 Van Roosmalen knocked him down with low kicks and ko'd him with a head kick.) All athletes excel differently among all of the combat sports & all the sports require specialized training.
