I decided to give the NGE a try about a month ago, and from what I saw the game appears to be doing quite decently. They have actually gone about redoing and adding some nice content to fill in what was changed or lost by the NGE, and they continue to add more content.

All in all it's not too bad now, and still worth playing and personally I still play both this and on the Emu so it's really the best of both worlds. (Sadly my old computer can't handle the NGE engine as well so mostly the emu)

If you are planning to come back, check to see if your server was merged, hopefully you'll be able to recover your characters, and yes the game is still alive, but nothing like it used to be, don't expect to see anyone at player cities or Corolag.

Played this game at launch on Scylla until SOE fucked it. It was never the same, never as fun. and I have yet to find another MMO like it was back in 2003

the last time i played this game was around 6 months ago or so and when i came back to it i said the same thing, however, i wasnt right, there is people around still, but nowdays they dont stay in one spot, they doing quests, instances, pvp and flying. It is obvious that SWG had lost like 50% of its population, but there are still quiet some players on it.

SWG is not dead. The only ones who said the game is dead are the ones who couldnt stand that in 2005 the bugged combat system needed to be redone.

I play since 2003 and left for 6 months during the NGE. Cryed as all vets but give a chance to the game and sorry for all the whinners but the game is much better than Pre-CU.

well back in a day you had alot more professions compared to what u have now! i think there were about 20 from styling hair, giving buffs, Creature handling, and they nerfed the game right down to i think 6 professions or something. Also the PRE CU meaning they screwed about with creature handling, combat system was messed with tweaked some stuff removed. And then it got worse from there, there was a point where u couldnt walk through corellia starport! lag was insane through sellers

today there are: Jedi, Spy, Commando, Medic, Bounty Hunter, Officer, Smuggler, Entertainer, Trader and evry proff can be Beastmaster. Great is still great. Thing is all Elders suck to much to play lol, they were to lazy to learn new combat system. altho It was slightly cooler and more fun back then. But there are cooler items and intances now.

The reason people quit is because it's a different game than it was. Yeah some of the graphics and skins of npcs are the same.. but once the gameplay changes completely, whats the point of playing anymore? Thats like playing mario - because its mario - they edit the game so it's kirby's dream land playstyle, and the game name is still mario - its like, fuck this I wanted to play mario - EVERYONE LIKED the game the way it was, they had no GOOD reason to change it at all.

( I apologize if that's not the whole story, I don't have all the details). btw its because of what SOE did to SWG that made me refuse to play anything by SOE.

Sony would get my money if they kept their current combat system but just went back to the old skill system from pre-NGE. I've never been a big fan of classes and when I left the game there was practically zero post-90 work. The thing I liked about the skill system is that there was so much work to do with your toon you could practically never be done with it.  I miss that.

The attribute/skill system in the current game as well as the content abilities like GCW abilities, Loot item Abilities, Collections etc. make character customization deeper and more meaningful than poking lairs for xp and ignoring useless skill trees like in the old system.

I prefer playing the game and working with traders to create the template you WANT (not NEED like Pre NGE Chapter 6)over spamming the combat queue or grinding lairs to fill one of 5 viable templates.

I think you have the old game confused with something else. There were no templates in the old game. It was free form. You could train in any skill you practiced.

Classes and levels are relics from when gamers were first developing the concepts and were dealing with making it simpler for people using pen and paper, rather than a CPU capable of 500 mips. SWG pre-NGE had gone past that, as computer games should. The modifications to the system haven't come close to what you used to be able to do.

In the old game the skil layout you chose was called a template. Many of the skills available in the boxes were useless or broken..so they weren't viable choice. So you could train in any skill you wanted to, but you were wasting your time.

Because of that there was only really an illusion of choice..and a broken game.

I can't believe somebody with a script decompiler wouldn't have brought that to light. I never heard of anyone making that claim, anyway. Every skill I trained in made a noticeable difference in my progress, so I'd be curious to know which ones you meant (I went TK/Medic).

On a side note, I looked into the rewards you are talking about. It appears to be about 98% trinkets and gear, but there is at least some stat progress so kudos to Sony for putting at least SOMETHING to work toward after 90.

You and 5 other TK/Medics would die in a PvP fight against 1 Combat Medic. Additionally you HAD to take at least 1 tree in medic to be viable. That's not choice and its definitely not 32 professions. Choice is an illusion if you are penalized so severly for it.

Th new system allows you to choose 1 of9 expertises which reflect a play style, skill set, role, etc.

As you spend your expertise points you shape it to be specialized i nthe way you want to play it.

Once 90 you use skill attachments which specific skills. Here you specialize your character when combined with the expertise.

Then you play the game. You earn abilities and beneficial items through the GCW, quests, instances, collectiosn and loot. Like a BH sheild for your Jedi or a burst run for your smuggler..

In the end you played the game to shape your character..and didnt have to poke one lair to do it

Not so. I PvP'd all the time and went up against my share of combat medics and never got embarrassed. And those who made entertainer/traders would seriously disagree that there is more choice nowadays.

You make an interesting case for the new game; the only thing I might say is that NGE or no, many of the things you mentioned would probably be added to the game in some form.

There are 6 attributes. These attributes are capped at cl 90. The only way to develop them are through Attachments, Food, Buffs, and Items.

The 6 attributes affect a variety of combat offenses and defenses like block, parry, dodge, strikethrough, critical hit, to-hit, etc.

There are also specific skills, like rifle damage, lightsaber action cost, etc.

This is where a smugg, using a melee expertise, could improve his tanking and polearm abilities or A Medic could become a defensive TKM

I discovered that much of what you said about new content is true, but there is one SERIOUS problem that completely undoes the game for me.

They emasculated the combat system. Why on earth did they enable a form of lock-on? The one thing about the NGE I liked was that you needed to keep the reticule aimed. Now they don't even have that.

Way to go Sony. You've somehow managed to make NGE lamer.

Not true, and besides that's not the point, the Emu is still in Alpha stage, if that, many of the things are not implemented onto the live TEST server, it will be just like SWG in pre-CU, the only reason the test server is up is so we can find bugs and tell the developers, its a community project where we all listen to each other, I wouldn't expect you to understand that sine your playing SOE's version.

But that's just it. People who prefer the old SWG aren't usually interested in new gear. The strength was in the old skill system.
