As a Subway assitant manager, and an avid learner of japanese and all things japan, I am glad to have found this video. I have a group of japanese men who have been visiting our store for about a week now, here on business. I can vouch for the fact that they know the drill about ordering a footlong! Hilarious! I got to say Koko ni Tabemasu Ka? as my boss rang them up, and smiles were had by all. Great to see this video man. Im a big fan. Eight thumbs up!
Came over by way of the whiskey and beer subway video. Interesting the little additions and cultural subtractions. Not a lot of cheese? And the only concession to Japanese food tastes is the wasabi and the teriyaki chicken. And maybe the egg sandwich. I would have thought they would have had more seafood subs. Eel? In Boston, Subway has the most yummy crabmeat sandwiches. I'm trusting the Subways in Japan don't have that icky coldcut ham. Thanks for the upload.
im learning japanese but you can only go so far with free lessons on the internet, do japanese people get offended when you dont really know the lingo?
@pianojamcake It really depends on how long you're there. If you're only visiting, they could care less. They expect you to bad at Japanese if you're just a stupid foreigner.
If you're there for like a year, you need to have a good understanding of the language.
If you're living there for a long period of time (i.e. a few years) they'll expect you to be fluent. Plus, you're life will be a lot easier in Japan if you can understand Japanese.
He discussed this topic in a video he made this week.
You mentioned that these were only in Big cities in Japan. What do you consider a big city? Or by Japanese standard what is considered a big city? Sorry if this really isn't the best place to ask. Thanks for the help though.
I'm surprised to see they're about the same price as in the U.S. But they're probably cleaner and friendlier (in Japan). But NO MEAT BALLS? that's a classic!
Hey man someone's probably already told you but avocado and bacon have been introduced as extras in Australia for quite some time now. The avo I think looks fresher than the playdough green type they seem to have in this video. Probably takes good still.
we use both in the uk metric and imperial...imperial for the sake of because it whats were used too and metric because were part of the eu and they make us.. so everything has both on its kinda good its nice to understand both worlds..the only thing that strictly imperial is our speed limit in mph...i think its great because i know that 2.2 pounds is 1 kilogram and that 1 ounce is 28 grams and a whole lot more shit that doesnt even matter to most people but its nice to know
I live in Mexico just across the border from the U.S. and Subways there don't even use "footlong". The menus say 15cm or or 30cm. It's the only time where I have actually had to sorta learn the metric system other than driving where everything is kilometers instead of miles.
We don't have a lot of Subways here in Sweden either and no, haven't seen neither avocado, scrambled eggs or wasabi and soy sauce, although we do have something unique to, namely Skagenröra...
A regular sandwich at 490 yen is $6.35 here. That's more expensive than 98% of the foot longs. Just goes to show you how and why our obesity rates are so high.
We've these in my country but I don't go to them. I go to a kebab restaurant in my town quite often, and to McDonalds - or to Hesburger, a Finnish version of McDonalds. I visited Subway in England and I didn't like it... perhaps I'll give it another go though.
Just curious here -- You film in a lot of stores and restaurants. Have you ever been asked to stop filming? I don't know if this is just a US thing, but if I went into a Subway or even a grocery store, I would be asked to put the camera away. I guess they might see it as some sort of copyright infringement or some sort of privacy violation. Is that something you come across much in Japan?
In america Subway is in every small town. there is always a Mcdonalds and a subway, lol, they counteract each other I guess. I like Subway somewhat, although I think their sandwiches are a bit bland and whats the point of getting cheese on one because you can't taste it. It's like add extra calories for no extra flavor.
It looks excactly like Subway here in Norway. Like in Japan, they're mostly located in the big cities, like Oslo and Bergen. I have seen one in Arendal, though, which is a city of 40K inhabitants.
the avocado thing is new, only been here in the states for a month or two. but we have a chipotle sauce..........its spicey.
also,to the top comment saying subway is dirty.....just because your subway is dirty doesnt mean they all are. there are 2 subways within 4 miles of my apartment, one is dirty(and gets robbed all the time) and the other one is very clean.
now THIS is really messed up! Japan has everything and they even have a subway better than here?! We don't have wasabi, we don't have those wraps, or those cool cheese shredders! =(
Same but different. I like to get thier chipolte sauce on my steak and cheese with double pepperjack cheese. Then some black olives and some banana peppers too.
Not very clean. I noticed how they used the same gloves to touch many different ingredients, and they even put some back into the bin after it touched the food. Since I don't eat beef or pork, I wouldn't want to eat there if I ordered chicken or fish, because I might as well be eating beef or pork if I'm getting ingredients that touched beef/pork.
But then again, that's the way some Subways are here in the US too. There are a few clean ones/workers though.
I really like this video. I work at a Subway here in the states and it's SO much different. I would like to work at one in Japan, that would be really neat.
How do you pronounce "centimetres" in Japan? I've heard "senchi" and "sentimeteru", with the latter being said by a Japanese scientist in a news report. I think I'd get what I'd like in this subway :p
This place is also pretty English friendly due too to massive amount of English terms that had to be imported. Everything on the menu is in English basically (except for the soy sauce and the avocado) and the bread names are import too. Are the vegetables in English too?
OMG they don't put the bread on paper first. Wow! So different. I worked at Subway and we had to put the Subway sandwhich paper first then the wrapping paper before we put the bread on.
I didn't see any spinach there. Did they have any spinach there? Subway has been taking spinach off the menu in more and more of their locations which is very disheartening considering they used to be about healthy fast food, but with all of the recent corporate decisions they've been making they're moving closer and closer to your average fast food place.
the cheese is different, where i live they use the fresh slices and melt it for u, but in japan they use squeezable cheese... strange because japan is know for beeing healthier :/
@dondondodo As someone in the Netherlands, I HAVE to disagree :p Though most cheese probably is unhealthy, there's some cheese that's not unhealthy. If the rest of your diet and daily exercise can compensate, you're good to eat lots of cheese, probably :p
@dondondodo Lol, you still call it cheese :P. I once heard of someone who said "Yeah I go to subway cuz it's healthy" who then proceeds to order a sub with ham, bacon and 'cheese' without veggies and with extra mayo. Yup, healthy indeed.
But real cheese doesn't have to be unhealthy though. That yellow chemical stuff labelled cheese is probably mostly unhealthy.
@FHomeBrew LOL i agree, processed cheese is really bad (and tastes equally bad) lol. I find it really amusing that we are talking about cheese on a japan video. XDD
@dondondodo Speaking of which, I though asians in general, or maybe it was just the Chinese, didn't really like cheese. That may only be a rumour though. It's not like they couldn't have invented cheese themselves, yet I've never heard of a Japanese or Cinese cheese (the same way there's French cheese and Dutch cheese).
@FHomeBrew well I'm not sure if they like it or not but my Japanese grandparents buy cheese lol, I'm not sure if it's just for me when I come over so they make me sandwhiches and stuff but cheese seems to sell in Japan. :P
@FHomeBrew that's true. both countries have never invented cheese. japanese people eat cheese by now, but they make only processed cheese. whatever you buy, all cheeses have almost the same taste)) chinese people still don't really eat cheese, but with economy is growing in china, chinese people start to eat more european foods, so they are getting used to this taste.
Definitely no wasabi or soy sauce here in the States. Avacado is provided here in California, but as an option at an additional cost ($0.50), and is not served as a spread, but as slices placed on top of the meat. As far a BBQ sauce, I'm not sure. The sandwich, which I beleive they market here, is the famous Philly cheese-steak, which traditionally is served with mayonaise, not BBQ sauce.
Man, your voice that starts with "Hey guys" has that healing effect. I'm a Japanese living in the US and really love your video!Keep up withe the good work!!
Why are American restaurants are always nicer in foreign countries? Even when I travel to Mexico, Burger King and McDonald's are even nicer that in the US!
@TheJapanChannelDcom Oh wow. The Subway in Japan looks tastier than in the US. And their store is so much better looking. Avocado is a newer thing. Scrambled eggs... Maybe it's a breakfast only thing or maybe a Japan only thing...LOL A shame that they didn't have the barbecue sauce. But damn., The quality of the subs look so much better than what I get in the US!! >_<
@theeyesofanother This is pretty much exactly the same as every American subway, that includes the cleanliness, the scrambled eggs, and avocado. And subway is American,,, so how exactly do we need to catch up?
@blahk04 I'd enjoy the avocado and especially wasabi (and cheese that has taste) - the ones I've seen have none of that and not as clean or decorated. I've not seen one in Chicago like this ? Where is it / are they ?
@blahk04 I was serious. I told someone here about this and they want to know as well (because they think they're all dirty disgusting holes, without these options). Where is this Subway in Chicago, that's not filthy dirty and has avocado and eggs ? I'm serious. I'll go if let me know where ? That'd be way cool. Thanks
@23penguins32 You could go to one Downtown on i think lakeshore or something, or the one on Milwaukee and california, thats the one i usually go to, except the Indian people have strong accents so its like SLOW DOWN lol
@bevekerry No worries with the accent. I have asked since I posted the above comment and everyone has said theirs nothing like this in the States. I mean with Wasabi, avocado, etc. Funny (but sad) an internet food critic friend of mine said Chicago has the dirtiest restaurants (by public record) in the U.S. People from here boast about them. Yikes. I'll have a look at the Subway at Milwaukee and California. Logan Square is a cleaner neighbourhood than when I first lived there. Very cool. Cheers.
@theeyesofanother yea................................ no i like my meat and i was going to comment does the japanesse not bug meat eaters or what i am just seeing that trend, i would love to to the country but not if red meat is something that i am going to pay a premium price for
The "to-ma-to," uh oh, Japan life is rubbing off on ya :).
As far as the BBQ sauce, it's actually a limited time flavor, even in the U.S. where I'm at. They say they'll be removing it again. Very weird, but oh well. The eggs is not a surprise in Japan, but very surprising, of course, if it was in the U.S. Eggs for Subway sounds really tasty.
Would it be socially acceptable to have a paper block with me, so I could doodle and draw the things I want to put on my sandwich? I think it would be hard sometimes for the attendant to know what I am pointing at...
A bit of trivia for ya; Subway is now bigger than McDonalds! But that is only my measuring # of locations, and not by amount of revenue or profits. Still, I was surprised when I heard that earlier this year... p.s. I can't believe they have sesame bread in Japan but not in the US! >:-(
If i go to japan, and a see a price that says 199 yen, will there be tax ontop of that like there is in the states? As in, will I have to pay more than that 199 in order to account for tax?
@iKilledKennyXD You got it right. Japanese weekdays get their names from the elements. Sunday is Sun day, Monday is Moon day, Thuesday is Fire day, Wednesday is Water day, Thusday is Wood day, Friday is Gold day, and Saturday is Earth day. Hope that helps.
I got subway in beijing once. Everyone somehow understood my english. My friends tried ordering and they couldnt understand them at all. It was funny.
At the end the paper that wraps the sandwich is different. In New York it is fully open flat like one sheet of paper not stuck on one side. Also if you order different sandwiches it will be wrapped separately not put together.
I would LOVE to get a Teriyaki chicken sub with wasabi and soy sauce on sesame bread. Mmmmm! Why can't they offer awesome options like these in Texas? ;) Also, that's the classiest Subway I've ever seen.
how much this sandwich cost 450 yen ? its like few dollars? in my city subway is some short desk in big mall with tapestry on back looking like bricks :D
Comparing Japanese and German Subway the first thing coming to mind is Teriyaki Chicken. Here it's this sliced pieces and in Japan it's real chicken-chunks in real Teriyaki-sauce.
awesome video.... I just noticed that a lot of things are better in japan... even subway.. those sandwich that you bought looked stacked and nicely done unlike when I buy subway here in vancouver.. :P LOL
Couple of new things over in their subway as compared to my American subways. For example, at 5:17 it looks like she's grating cheese over the grinder. In America, they don't do that. I don't think we have that same sauce thingy she's putting on 3:29.
I haven't been to a subway in a few months, so maybe it's changed, but I doubt it has. Good food tho! Love subway!
man they take so much care over making the sandwiches... in my town they dont give a f*** and just throw it all in, and there normally isnt enough of it either ... : /
@philxcorexinxurxface I agree mostly. Only some Subways put the ingrediences nicely on the bread here in Hamburg. In the city center and central station you can get mostly crap. Further away from the center and near the university they make better Sandwiches.
Nice, while they're making your sandwich they're stuffing garbage into the trash and then going right back to making the sandwich. It's funny how when someone is wearing plastic gloves they suddenly stop caring about hygine.
Oven Roasted Chicken on Italian Herb & Cheese, Mozzarella, Lettuce, Tomato, & Onion, no dressing.
Mmm, it's about lunch time here :D

Wasabi sauce, how does it taste like? Like real wasabi or watered down sweet-tasting wasabi?

Why are American restaurants are always nicer in foreign countries? Even when I travel to Mexico, Burger King and McDonald's are even nicer that in the US!
Bigben2u 6 months ago
@TheJapanChannelDcom Oh wow. The Subway in Japan looks tastier than in the US. And their store is so much better looking. Avocado is a newer thing. Scrambled eggs... Maybe it's a breakfast only thing or maybe a Japan only thing...LOL A shame that they didn't have the barbecue sauce. But damn., The quality of the subs look so much better than what I get in the US!! >_<

Its so much cleaner than any subway i've ever seen. The states need to catch up!
theeyesofanother 6 months ago 52
@theeyesofanother Oregon is pritty good at keeping the resturants clean
darkninjawalljumper 5 months ago
@theeyesofanother This is pretty much exactly the same as every American subway, that includes the cleanliness, the scrambled eggs, and avocado. And subway is American,,, so how exactly do we need to catch up?
blahk04 5 months ago
@blahk04 I'd enjoy the avocado and especially wasabi (and cheese that has taste) - the ones I've seen have none of that and not as clean or decorated. I've not seen one in Chicago like this ? Where is it / are they ?
23penguins32 5 months ago
@blahk04 I was serious. I told someone here about this and they want to know as well (because they think they're all dirty disgusting holes, without these options). Where is this Subway in Chicago, that's not filthy dirty and has avocado and eggs ? I'm serious. I'll go if let me know where ? That'd be way cool. Thanks
23penguins32 5 months ago
@23penguins32 You could go to one Downtown on i think lakeshore or something, or the one on Milwaukee and california, thats the one i usually go to, except the Indian people have strong accents so its like SLOW DOWN lol
bevekerry 5 months ago

I think it would be hard sometimes for the attendant to know what I am pointing at...
oscarscheepstra 6 months ago
A bit of trivia for ya; Subway is now bigger than McDonalds! But that is only my measuring # of locations, and not by amount of revenue or profits. Still, I was surprised when I heard that earlier this year... p.s. I can't believe they have sesame bread in Japan but not in the US! >:-(

If i go to japan, and a see a price that says 199 yen, will there be tax ontop of that like there is in the states? As in, will I have to pay more than that 199 in order to account for tax?

Question: don't the kanji under tuesday, wednesday, and thursday stand for fire, water, and earth/forest?
iKilledKennyXD 6 months ago
@iKilledKennyXD You got it right. Japanese weekdays get their names from the elements. Sunday is Sun day, Monday is Moon day, Thuesday is Fire day, Wednesday is Water day, Thusday is Wood day, Friday is Gold day, and Saturday is Earth day. Hope that helps.

Can't they just add okonomiyaki sauce instead of barbeque.
MegaDavetastic 6 months ago
At the end the paper that wraps the sandwich is different. In New York it is fully open flat like one sheet of paper not stuck on one side. Also if you order different sandwiches it will be wrapped separately not put together.
kimmeeCheah 6 months ago
I would LOVE to get a Teriyaki chicken sub with wasabi and soy sauce on sesame bread. Mmmmm! Why can't they offer awesome options like these in Texas? ;) Also, that's the classiest Subway I've ever seen.

:P LOL
distortish 6 months ago
Couple of new things over in their subway as compared to my American subways. For example, at 5:17 it looks like she's grating cheese over the grinder. In America, they don't do that. I don't think we have that same sauce thingy she's putting on 3:29.
I haven't been to a subway in a few months, so maybe it's changed, but I doubt it has. Good food tho! Love subway!
NebulaSteam 6 months ago
man they take so much care over making the sandwiches... in my town they dont give a f*** and just throw it all in, and there normally isnt enough of it either ... : /
philxcorexinxurxface 6 months ago 2
@philxcorexinxurxface I agree mostly. Only some Subways put the ingrediences nicely on the bread here in Hamburg. In the city center and central station you can get mostly crap. Further away from the center and near the university they make better Sandwiches.

Nice, while they're making your sandwich they're stuffing garbage into the trash and then going right back to making the sandwich. It's funny how when someone is wearing plastic gloves they suddenly stop caring about hygine.
