Jimmy died in 1973 aged 51 and Danny Ross in 1976 aged 45, the BBC only has around 50 of the 300 programmes , most you find online are off air recordings made by fans of the show so the quality does vary, I used to go to many recordings of shows such as Round the Horne, The Navy Lark as I live in London, I never got a chance to go to The Clitheroe Kid as it was recorded in the Playhouse Theatre in Hulme, Manchester and the BBC would only send tickets if you lived in the area
@BandBoxParade Sorry mate, but you're wrong. 'The Clitheroe Kid' was also a TV show before the poor old bugger carked it. I distinctly remember it too... and I'm not Strawberry's dad!
Jimmy had a disease which prevented him from aging normally... aged nearly 80, he still looked like a 10-year-old boy; similar to (if not the same) disease that Gary Coleman ('Different Strokes') suffered from.
I, too, used to listen to this series on British Forces radio, BFBS from Cologne, whilst stationed in West Berlin, with the RAF (1972-74).
According to the website JimmyClitheroe.co.uk the series began with a pilot show on the BBC Home Service in April 1956.
In the 1960s, Jim Casey and Frank Roscoe wrote this radio series, The Clitheroe Kid, for the BBC. At the same time, Ronnie Taylor wrote Jimmy's television series, Just Jimmy, for ITV. Jimmy C and Danny Ross starred in both.
@VilaRestil, we always enjoyed the NAAFI, the Jerboa and Gatow theaters, and the great officer's club that you Brits gave us access to. I worked on Teufelsberg, if that is familiar to you.
I'm 21 and heard these from my grandparents who also got me into the doo wop/vocal group stuff of the 50s and swing, so it's sertenly a universal thing
@BandBoxParade. In the 1960s he broke into television, starring on ITV in “That’s My Boy” and “Just Jimmy” for 5 years from 1963 to 1968. Both shows were made by ABC Television. In the 1960s he also made his best remembered film, Rocket to the Moon, which he made in 1967 with Burl Ives and Terry-Thomas. i remember watching it after World of sport on a saturdaynight on ITV in the sixties.
@BandBoxParade Jimmy Clitheroe was a tv show filmed at the BBC on School lane Didsbury opposite the Parrs wood pub. The bbc left there in the 1970s and the building was then used by Didsbury poly. It is now apartments. St Marks high school is on the opposite side of Parrs wood rd. The schoolis now known as Barlow High.Which was the school attended by myself. Liam and Noel gallagher attended the same school.
Wonderful memories here - daft Alfie at the didkie teckie etc etc. Sunday afternoon on the Light programme in the sixties was brill, sadly never to be repeated. The Navy lark - Leslie philips saying "left hand down a bit", the fantastic Round the Horne - "ooo ello I'm Julian and this my friend Sandie" after 2 way family favourites with Judith chalmers and Michael Aspel. "Can you hear me in Cologne?"
When all this finished you could twiddle the dial and listen to Radio Caroline and Big L. FAB!!
Gees this really brings back memories. I remember listening to these as the family sat around the table eating Sunday lunch. Wonderful times and memories. Thx for posting thisxx
I got into The Clitheroe Kid when stationed in Berlin as an American Army officer ('68-'70). The show was broadcast on British Forces radio and we always listened on Sunday mornings. Thanks, Jimmy!
wow, that's a bargain, I might try and search the net, see if i can get that anywhere. Thanks for telling me, on second thoughts i wish you hadn't told me (just kidding)

I got into this since I was a kid, my grandparents got me into it i think...i used to fall to sleep to this for years an dyears...now i'm 22 and i'm thinking of getting back into that ritual...my girlfriend doesn't get it at all lol.

@BandBoxParade This was a TV show which was also adapted for radio, as was Dad's Army & Steptoe & Son.
My dad can remember a visual gag whereas Jimmy's mum ironed his football shirt - No. 7 and a half!

I leaned so many cheeky comments from Jimmy when I was a kid LOL. I think this would still make a great tv series even these days.
