This is probably one of, if not THE, best vocal performance of her career (this or the recording version)....it is also probably Stephen Schwartz best song.
I love her and this song. But after enveloping myself into the song and stuff, I don't get any emotion from this. I feel like she changes the circumstances for this certain performance and I really don't like it. :/ I mean, she sounds great, I just don't feel it.
@paharrisonnc Unfortunately this is a commonly used simplification of the piano part. The original is alot more intricate and, in my opinion, very JRB. You should check out the version I posted in response to this video or Liz Callaway's version to hear the song performed the way it's meant to be performed (instead of heavy acting and arbitrary pitches)
@thedragonmaster1 while i respect your opinion, trust, Ms. LuPone originated this song. And while you may prefer Ms. Callaway's version, in my mind you must at least attempt to show respect to the woman who gave it life in the first place; Or did you not actually watch the video? .... Personally, I think she's a fantastic actor- and when it comes to telling the story, I believe every word that comes out of her mouth.
She is incomparable...in a class of her own... a true Broadway diva.....I have goosebumps and can barely breathe when her performs.... she is like NO ONE ELSE...
Now this is not to say there are not other superb versions of Meadowlark... but there is room for all...that is the nature of a great "tune"...
I think Patti is one of the bravest singers I have ever heard. Not only is she brave vocally but always emtionally. She bares it all, hence why she is a superstar on Broadway. She portrayed Eva Pedron frightening well. A true star a true soul just trying to bust out of her shell. Defying the odds all around her. Amazing!
"Have you ever been in a relationship where it's not exactly the best, and it's not exactly the worst -- then out of no where comes this HUNK?! Meadowlaaarrrrrk!"
Patti Lupone co-starred in The Baker's Wife with Topol (of Fiddler On The Roof fame). Topol stopped coming to rehearsals when they working on changes pre-Broadway. Down it went. People loved the music, and Paul Sorvino was brought in to make a cast album, (with the copmposer playing piano).
My friends Cary & John owned Les Mouches. The night Pati performed we took her to 12 West disco afterwards. She was a blast to dance with at 12 West.
how about we say positive things about the person performing in the video we're watching and leave the comments about other people for their own videos? art is not a competition. it is beauty and acceptance. let's embrace talent- not weigh whether one person's talent is worth more than another's or claim they have none.
I just watch Alice Ripley's slow, full of pauses version. This version, with the tempo starting out right at the beginning is the version I'll always love - and, of course, this is one of Patti's greatest bits of material - in a career full of GREAT material. Brava Patti!

See, what Alice is doing is called "acting". When mixed with a song, it's generally used to convey some kind of emotion. This is something Patti is not even attempting. I'll give her credit though, I've never heard a recording of her where she didn't just run around the stage and scream the entire song. For this, I applaud her.
What constitutes "acting" always depends on the framework you're accepting. My personal feeling is that Patti's work is full of emotion. I don't quite understand what you mean about "...scream the entire song." I guess that, then, depends upon our framework for screaming. In the end, I guess it's all relative.
I was commenting on showtunestarpower's comment about Alice Ripley's "slow, full of puases version." Here, Patti rushes through it and misses every bit of emotion in the song. I get that she's not in character here, but she shows no emotion at all.
My personal feelings on LuPone as a singer/actress are that she WAY overdoes everything and, yes, screams and whines more often than sings. That's just me, and I'm not going to try to turn people against her. She has some VERY loyal fans! xD
I don't think Ripley does anything special in her acting or singing. All she does is act like she's about to cry and right when she's about to, she stops and acts strong again. That happened in The Baker's Wife and N2N. I think LuPone's rendition is very interesting. Also, since the song is taken out of context, she can't be expected to illustrate the character's feelings. She is simply interpreting the song her own way. I am not a huge fan of her, but I think it's a terrific rendition.
Oddly enough, this is the first time I have ever heard this song, even though I have heard the title many times. Even more oddly enough, this song (lyrics aside) sounds like a combination of "As If We've Never Said Goodbye" from Sunset Blvd. and "Another Hundred People" from Company. Beautifully so, though. I love this song!
One of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard. And Patti does it justice- almost unbearably beautiful. Though I prefer the original cast recording, this version is still awesome. Amazing.
I love PATTI! But truthfully! Is she on speed in this video? After performing Evita 8times a week and then doing this cabaret show afterward...one has to wonder...
I was wondering the same thing. LOL and she always complains in interviews that she could not sing the role of Evita. Barbra Streisand did the same thing during her run in "Funny Girl" on Broadway. I honestly don't know how they had a voice left after the show!
this song is really quintessential schwartz. and you BETTER sing patti! she makes songs sound like they were written for her-and it's amazing to me how she really inhabits the parts.
I don't think she imitates Liza at all, and while I can enjoy the Buck, her version of this song is maddeningly terrible. She speak-sings with an Irish accent and doesn't even attempt to sing some of the higher notes.
hey newnicktahoe, i was wondering if u had any clips of the song buenos aires (whether from les mouches or actual footage of the play) if u do pls post it
I love it! Every time she speaks about this song, she says the most hilarious things about it. What she says here and what can be heard on the Patti LuPone Live album are my favourites.
This is probably one of, if not THE, best vocal performance of her career (this or the recording version)....it is also probably Stephen Schwartz best song.

and this video proves how she tries too hard to be someone who doesn't try too hard.
