Hackman was armed, no doubt about it. If you follow his character in the previous episodes, you would see him ruthlessly protecting himself at any cost. Completely believable that he would be armed at all times while on the lam. Inspite of this, Crockett did execute him in revenge for Kaitlin. The presence of the gun is irrelevent to Crokett going over to the dark side.
Hackman killed Sonny's partner (pre-Tubbs) and was on death row for the crime. He then manipulated Sonny into thinking he was innocent, and Sonny helped get him off death row, only to have Hackman throw it in hi face after getting out of prison. He then showed up years later, and ends up murdering Sonny's pregnant wife. Sonny tracks him to a foreign country where he has arranged for corrupt officials to block his extradition. Under these circumstances I can understand Sonny taking the law i
Freaking censors nearly ruined one of the best scenes in Vice history. Crockett didn't plant ANY gun on the body nor did Hackman pull one out before Crockett snuffed him out in cold blood. It was NO freaking case of self-defense! That said, I love the contrast between Caitlin's song playing as a somber Crockett walks away having avenged her. The "Sonny Burnett" arc is next and Crockett would take out more narcs and mobsters there as the evil Burnett than he would as Crockett. MV4EVER.
Season 4 lost its way with the Vice cops doing wierd homocide cases, but pulls it back in the final few episodes. I thought the way Caitlin was taken out of the picture was a bit strange and they really brought the Hackman character back in to facilitate that. I think Caitlin was a strategy to rescue ratings and it didn't quite work so they yanked her and started the Burnett/memory loss idea which did work.
Seond only to the ending of that Magnum PI where Magnum asks Ivan if he saw the sunrise, then turns and shoots him point blank and freeze frames at the muzzle flash. I too felt that Hackman having a pistol anywhere nearby was a cop out (no pun intended) and should have shown how dark Crockett had really become...
The "throw away" gun as you call it is actually a "backup gun" that many police officers carry in the event of malfunctions, etc. to their primary sidearm. Crockett carried a backup gun on an ankle holster for the entire Miami Vice series.
@sgt803 Right on, Sarge. Sonny always carried a back-up and it was a stainless model, just like his S&W .45. The gun in Hackman's hand was a blue steel auto, probably a .380 They first showed Sonny's back up gun when the gal he picked up, stole his primary in "The Prodical Son" while he and Tubbs were in New York
damn I have the whole series box set too and i'm gonna start season 4 . I wish when i was a kid i had watched these lol . I'm just now catching up ...damn and let's see this aired in 1988 ...i was.6 ? lol
@121126He killed Crockett's wife(sheena easten), who was pregnat. good reason to kill him. I just wish they didn't add the gun: in the original scene he did not have a gun, they added it because the T.V. executive's didn't wan Sonny to kill an unarmed man.
The gun in Hackman's hand is a puss-out. As others noted, NBC insisted on it, though the dialogue obviously implies Hackman was unarmed. Why would Sonny say "Wrong" otherwise? It's somewhat surprising as this was 6 years after Tom Selleck' as Magnum had famously killed Bo Svensen as Ivan in cold blood. Of course, we can imagine Sonny planted the gun, but that would be more devious than just killing him.
Magnum P.I. did it first, almost six years earlier. Check out the video "Ivan, Did you see the Sunrise?" Thomas Magnum shoots Ivan in the stunning conclusion of the episode.
i still believe that the scene with the dead guy holding a pistol was added to not make it out that Sonny would murder someone in cold blood. There was another edit of such with Stan Switek one time as well.
I would also have preferred there NOT be a gun visible from Hackman. It would have been the one and ONLY time Crockett would've killed someone without due-process. Clearly this was highly *personal* though.
Hackman WAS a hell of a villain. His little "he-he" thing he always ended most of his remarks with really made you hate this guy :)
Why oh why don't they get the cast together for another pilot to see if the world is ready for another go at this show? Obviously things would be different tho
Who cares if crockett planted a gun,the man killed his police partner years ago and murdered Crocketts new WIFE,who cares why he killed the man, brilliant episode.
To this day I don`t know if Hackman actually had a hidden gun or Sonny planted it on him after killing him to claim "justifiable shooting/self defense"? Not that it matters - Hackman was one of the best evil villains on a TV series ever! He deserved to die for killing Sheena Easton`s character & Sonny`s unborn child. What do you think?
@SirRetku Yep, a Smith & Wesson 645 to be exact. When the show started off he used a Bren Ten 10mm, and after a couple of seasons switched to the 645. The last season or 2 he switched again to a newer S&W 4506.
@w1steria62 seriously, i think people like hackman need to put on a shutter to hell..did you see him praying to god for forgiveness..or even asking sonny to forgive him?..how would you feel if a psycho killer wasted someone you loved with all your heart?..
Crockett blew him away , not knowing if he had a gun or not?? or did he . . . . . . and it happends to turn out , HACKMAN did have a gun , so , once again Sonny rules and was justified , .
God I remember this from when I was a kid ... it was unbelievable ... here's the cop just shooting a dude in cold blood! It was the weirdest thing I'd ever seen on TV.
has don ever looked as cool and well dressed as in this scene.....wow.....there's a magnum scene too where tom whacked this russian guy it's almost as good as this.....
...was shocked when it 1st aired but screamed with delight 3 seconds later!!! Big fan & even though it could not bring back his wife or unborn child Crockett delivered justice!!!
Not sure Hackmans death counts since he was already supposed to executed. As for Sonny killing HAckmans wife..did not happen. I belive it was Hackmans gun.
Pop music of the time and great fashion. Living in Miami I recall seeing them shooting at times depending what location it was. And they did A LOT of on-location filming unlike most other TV shows where they do 95% shooting on a set.
@Gabrielvogel I grew up with Sonny Crockett. He's an icon, no doubt. But Sonny Crockett is now Colin Farrell and is a sucker for chinese women, and Don Johnson does things like play a border vigilante in Machete. David Caruso on the other hand brings the crazy every week on CSI Miami, dealing out help and justice in equal doses, putting on his sunglasses as a signal to the fates that the chain reaction of rescuing the innocent and smiting the craven and depraved has begun and cant be stopped.
''Crockett being burnett should have been a longer storyline''
I have to disagree, because once ''amnesia'' is part of the storyline, you know the writers became desperate.Im not saying that johnson didn't pull it off, being a baddie. But,that storyline was doomed from the beginning, with a ridiculous premise. In the last 2 seasons,i don't think they had one truly great episode.A few ok ones, but nothing compared to the great ones in the first 3 seasons.
Crockett is such a hypocrite...in the pilot, he kept Tubbs from killing Caldreon, who had his brother killed and in the next season, he wouldn't let Tubbs kill the cop who had his girlfriend & son killed."Not like this, buddy". Or... "If you want him so bad, dump the badge & go after him on your own" ... Or "That's not a call you get to make", talking to the D.A. that wanted Hackman executed cause' he was dirt..
@welcometoorefuge Yeah... but he had yet to gain the perspective he did when Caitlin died. After this, I'm sure his morality on those issues would be different. I mean, Crockett is only human, and most humans are hypocritical to some degree.
This episode's poorly written. It was a cheap attempt to bring somebody back, and completely CHANGED his character! What made forgive us our debts so great was that hackman was a brilliant mastermind. Now 2 years later,he's a reckless, stupid thug? Also hackman's annoying right hand man, made me want to punch my t.v.Of course easton's acting and singing make this episode unbearable.Season 4 is the worst of the series.5 wasnt much better.Just watch the episodes from first 3.Theres about 30 good ones
@TheGatorfan93 Totally agree. Probably the best ep ever is "Evan" but some others just made me cringe. Only good thing about this storyline was when Sheena Easton was killed.
Crockett being Burnett should have been a longer storyline.
I think something like that would have been considered with today's shows. At least shows like "Homicide" were ensemble. Something that MV kinda lacked that. You had the women detectives just in the background.
@nomobties I remember that ! He and a buddy kept telling each other they were going to see the sun rise off the coast to get them through Vietnam. The buddy was killed by the perp. Magnum has him under the gun and asks him "did you see the sun rise this morning". They guy responds "yes". The scene fades and your hear a gunshot. awesome !
@TheThunderduck Yeah, Magnum shooting Ivan was much better than Crocket shooting Hackman. With Crocket, I think it was a case of executive interference. They didn't want their hero cop to shoot a guy in cold blood. I think it was originally filmed as an execution and they put the gun in to show that Crockett had to defend himself. Magnums's scene was much better as Magnum just plain executed Ivan for his crimes...and we were okay with that.
Actually, the script called for Hagman to be unarmed...NBC wanted the gun added because they didn't want Crockett to kill him in cold-blood...I like it better without the gun.
When I remember seeing it in the 80's, I could have sworn I saw Crockett walk over to Hackman and bend slightly down and then walk away. The camera stayed on his face and it left you with the impression that he did plant it. I purchased the Miami Vice Complete Series DVD and it plays just like this. Oh well.
@pastorbilly1 No kidding! I would say Crockett (the character) would have shot Hagman reguardless. You Folks should check out Miami Vice Chronicles,,.. any way that's where Crockett was at at the time,, he went down there four one reason,.. and Coustillo knew it.
@BOURBONJULIO i understand revenge, you or me may even take part in revenge if someone did such an evil that we just couldn't let it go, but and there is always a but, you know, he is a government agent of the law and therefor must be held accountable to a higher standard. what he did was wrong no mater the situation. unless he resigned for the police force before he did what he did he has no forgiveness. however it's just a movie so it doesn't matter.
