there's a similar scene in The Shootist. John Wayne is dying, and he tells Ron Howard to throw the gun away, he does, and Wayne is content. Jude Law was never so sleazy ('cept maybe when he was arrested with the prostute, the thing that broke up his engagement to Elizabeth Hurley) :D
Well I just noticed a problem with this awesome scene. When Tom hanks gets shot in the back the bullets also go through his chest which should mean they hit the window causing the glass to shatter.
"I saw then that my father's only fear was that his son would follow the same road. And that was the last time I ever held a gun. People always thought I grew up on a farm. And I guess, in a way, I did. But I lived a lifetime before that, in those six weeks on the road in the winter of 1931. When people ask me if Michael Sullivan was a good man, or if there was just no good in him at all, I always give the same answer. I just tell them... he was my father."
I gave this video the only thumbs down. 'The End Scene' should have started with their approach towards the beach in the car. Not with Tom Hanks walking towards the window.
@Antimatter1979 remember this was set back in 1931, which means guns weren't as powerful to cause exit wounds at least not with the pistol the hitman was using
@mcw8465 Got me on that one... There are some really great original scores! Don't forget about Conan, the Barbarinan.... by Basil Poledouris! Amazing too
@al3xdroid3 That is true, a fantastic score! My favourite overall film composer has to be Jerry Goldsmith tho, Alien, 5 Star Trek films, just a truly iconic composer.
Jude Law is so creepy in this movie, but the imagery is beautiful and the ending is just perfect. "None of us will see heaven!" "Michael could." "Then do everything you can to see that that happens."
I'm one of the most stoic guys around, and I cried like a little girl during this. This movie is living proof that "movie critics" don't know their asses from their elbows!
The sea reflecting in the window. Dying bloody Tom Hanks laying down against the white wall. The slow zoom-out at the end when the kid's crying. When he looks out at the sea...The whole scene at the beach house is just a piece of art. I love this movie.
Excellent performances all around, but I actually realllly liked the kids performance here too. Unlike most child actors he never seems to overdue his acting, and I thought he actually held his own with Tom, Jude, and Paul fairly well. Beautiful ending though, I loved that it still ended on a somewhat happy note despite him losing his father. One of the most underrated movies I've ever seen along with Unbreakable.
One of the most memorable scenes in a movie ever. This has always stuck with me. Tom? You've truly outdone yourself. The young boy wasn't bad either, of course. Great movie.
A great movie, all the way around. But only in Hollywood can the GOOD guy get shot TWICE in the back from ten feet away and still live long enough to shot the BAD guy 5 minutes later from the same distance. And, of course, his ONE shot finished off the BAD guy for good.
@000SMITH000 Who the fuck are you? A cocksucker for Jude Law? This is one of the very best movies of the decade. Apparently you are a horrible critic. The movie isn't about "bad guys" and "good guys". As far as I'm concerned this movie is about a father and son.
@roxtar55 It is a great film, just a bit unrealistic at the end. By the way......why didn't the glass shatter when Tom Hanks got shot ? The bullet clearly went through him because you see the blood. I guess the bullet must have bounced off of the window, huh? LOL.....more Hollywood nonsense.
@000SMITH000 well if jude laws character wasnt so insane and greedy he could have killed hanks' character with another shot, but he wanted to get photos of him dying first. people have been shot way more than twice and lived for more than a few minutes, its not just in hollywood... however a good shot to the head will usually put you out quick. the guy making the argument about why the glass doesnt get hit by a bullet, but has blood sprayed on it has a better argument. but in the end, who cares
@penal420 Jude laws character took pictures of bodies - he didn't care if they were dead or still dying. And I know it's possible to be shot twice and still live, but isn't it funny how it always takes just one shot to kill the bad guy? By the way, I am the guy who made the argument about the glass not breaking.
@000SMITH000 well thats true that law didnt usually care. but in the case of micheal sullivan's character, who has a reputation for being an incredibly dangerous man, it would be a very good trophy for a man like jude laws character to have proof that he killed him, or at the very least, had photos of him in his last moments. plus this hit was personal to law's character since sullivan fucked up his face earlier in the movie during their shootout. the mob already called off sullivans hit.
No matter how many times I see this film, I boo-hoo cry! The feeling of overwhelming horror knowing you've met your end with your son witnessing it, is beyond gut-wrenching.
A genuinely beautiful and touching movie, and not just this end scene. It deals with that trickiest of subjects - the father/son relationship - with genuine restraint and intimacy. Mendes' finest film, in my opinion. The line at the end - "He was my father" - gets me every time. And let's not forget the heartbreaking Thomas Newman soundtrack. I can also heartily recommend the original graphic novel by Max Allan Collins. Very violent and different to the movie, but the artwork is lovely.
i love it when mcguire says to michael "dont you do this" almost like he doesnt want to die and hes scared that the kid will kill him. also anyone else notice that when mcguire dies he falls flat down like a mannequin doll, its really funny.
Why doesn't the window shatter when Michael Sr. gets shot? His blood splashes on the glass, so the bullets obviously pierced him, so why don't they damage the glass? I've noticed this in many movies. Is it a ballistics thing or what?
this was one of my top favorite movies for many reasons including exellent storyline heart reaching music and brings me memories of my favorite game "mafia"
when people ask me if he was a god man , or not i just tell them one thing- he was my father......!!!!!!! best qout ever riten for a father and sun story!!!!!! i love to wach this mouvie with my father!!!!!.....
@JuanCalderonHop If they did exit the body then the speed was brought down so much that they didn't have enough force to break the glass thereafter. And they're thick windows.
The bullets didn't go all the way through. He most likely was using small caliber ammunition or maybe hollow-points. Remember this was the 30s, bullets weren't what they are now.
I have seen many, many films in my past 20 years. And only one film has ever made me cry. It was this film, and it was this scene.
I was 12. haha.
