  • When I see so many ppl arguing about who's a better drummer than... let's say idk... Portnoy or Priester, or whoever. I come here, sit down, have a mental rythmical wank with that @ 1:09 fill and the following verse beat, and I seriously don't give a FLYING F*** about Mr good drummer or any other block at all. This guy is BONKERS!

  • He reminds me of the singer from ELO here.

  • He is a monster!!!

  • i'm glad he didn't join DT cos his playing suits the complicated style of Spastic Ink, Blotted Science (Ron's band) and the speed/power metal Riot.. FANTASTIC!!

  • 0:06 an unknown knight drew his sword

  • I would have layed down the drum tracks of the entire Dream Theater discography to perfection 50 times over before sooner than I'd nail this track or Multi Masking... Bobby is insane.

  • @DogBoots77 Me too, and I'm not even a drummer...

  • 8 people are fucking stupid

  • back problems dude...

  • I've probably watched this video more than any other video on youtube. As a guitarist, Ron's parts, while insane, actually make sense to me. This drumming, on the other hand, is so far beyond insane that I can't even fathom being able to play it. Bobby + Ron = most talented brother duo of all time.

  • impressive :O

  • I doubt that they're actually recording anything here - there are no overhead mics nor any mics on the toms...

  • Ha, your my friends uncle!

  • It's pretty rare that you find two brothers who are both this skilled at their instruments.

I can say without a doubt in my mind that these guys are two of the best in the world.

  • wo wo wo wo wo wo wo ... theres a bobby jarzombek? - related to ron i assume.

wat is it with crazy ass names meaning ur good at music? lol

oh and BEAST OF A DRUMMER .. just sayin very impressed.

  • alot of talk about what music is about. like all art it is open to individual interpretation. in my interpretation, portnoy couldn't be a tech for jarzombek. did i ruin the music for anyone? then stop reading and pay attention to the drummer...

  • the way he sits looks a bit unhealthy o.0 looks like hes bending his back but maybe thats just the camera perspective :D

  • @fuerchter I would gladly sacrifice my back to play like that :D

  • Insane rythm patterns, awesome technique! Great work!

  • why do people feel it is so important to compare this guy to portnoy. They're both awesome but also have distinct differences so let's leave it at that

  • brutal drumkit.

  • this oddly reminds me a bit of frank zappa

  • @badboyofrock ..absolutely nothing is right

  • @powerbass12 Portnoy has nothing on this guy

  • @BadBoyofRock this guy fucks portnoy in the ass!

  • Comment removed

  • @powerbass12 Looks like your are missing his performance in the Images & Words album...

  • Ok ...this is what I don't get.

    Bobby never played in Watchtower

Bobby doesn't play in Blotted Science

Bobby is not famous, or doesn't play in 10 or more well known bands or projects.

Well known bands he plays/played in were only: Iced Earth, Halford, Sebastian Bach, and now fates warning.

  • @jossy2112

And your point is? Guess what, Budweiser outsells Dogfish Head by about a million to one too, but which one is the better beer? They also sell more Chevy's the Ferrari's, Britney Spears sells more records than King's X and Rush isn't in the RR HOF..see where I'm going with this Mr. Popular?

  • @jossy2112 So you are saying "but which one is the better beer", meaning who is the better drummer despite the popularity right. My question to u is WHEN the hell did i mention who's better than who as a drummer???

My point was that he should more recognized In the drummerworld.

Mr not wanting to be popular just to be cool!

  • Bobby For Dream Theater

  • @bitchobi Damn straight dude...

  • He has got to be one of the best drummers I have ever seen. I saw this clip some years ago and I'm am still amazed. But what makes him great is he can play anything.

  • Why is it all videos of this god playing include comments refering to Mike Portnoy? If anything, Mike's this guy's bitch..

  • this guy's so good is almost disturbing...

  • dis guys a god!!!

  • bobby for dream theater!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Bobby Jarzombek for A7X!!!

  • @irwin3036able Hell yeah, and portnoy goes back to DT!

  • if i have 1/100th of the talent this dude... and most prog drummers have... i would be a better drummer than 99 percent of drummers in the shitty bands people ball music today.

  • blake richardson can make a drum track thats just as good as this...

  • @greenwake69 this guy is killer. so is gavin harrison and thomas laange.

  • its so clearly executed. I realize that the comment sounds dumb.

  • They sould let the Fans decide who will be the next Drummer in DT. I think we have our MAN

  • @legatoshred they could never keep up with him. It's hard to keep up with someone like him, even for DT guys. Damn, he is good!

  • @powerbass12 i wouldnt say that in that way. you can say they are both good IN THEIR STYLE. IMHO you cant compare bobby und mike. themselfes alone play totaly different styles and compared to the bands they play in (or played cause mike is not with DT anymore) bobby plays math and portnoy progressive. and although these genres are related to each other their are totaly different.

  • it'd be great if, now that portnoy has left, he came to DT as the new drummer

  • Umm how come people keep saying Bobby Jarzombek is only good at technical playing? The man is THE go to metal session drummer and throughout his career has proven that he can play whatever is thrown at him wether its inhuman technical playing or simple straight foward stuff. Hes as versatile as any drummer mentioned so far.

  • Well, I'd say Bobby's stuff is definitely more difficult to play than Mike's, but Bobby probably did draw a lot of influence from the super-technical style that Mike started. I could live with him replacing Portnoy.

  • @ACDCBoy62 Dude, Bobby's first album w/ Juggernaut came out in 1986 - way before anybody even knew who Portnoy was. Dream Theater was barely a band then. Bobby is influenced by Neil Peart, Simon Philips, Terry Bozzio, Bill Bruford a.o. but certainly not by Mike Portnoy. And Portnoy didn't start anything - least of all 'super technical' drumming.

  • I think bobby is deffinetly better at physically playing the drums...but other then that its all about opinion people, so if you want mike to be better then he is! even if he did leave DT

  • when you get to this level of proficiency, "good" or "bad" is strictly a matter of taste/preference.

you cant say one guy is better than the next.

  • Marco Mike n Bobby r all top skilled drummers dudes if your a drummer u would understand there all creative unique talented dynamic drummers no sense in bitching whos better or worse MP has some serious chops 2 they all bring something 2 the table as far as technique goes

  • @pooperscooper Minnemann is just as good..agreed but i think its a different style..it gets real subjective at this level

  • In this style...I prefer Marco Minnemann. He's far cleaner and far more musical.

  • @abhimuscat No soul? Dude, I know portnoys good but if u want to go there he aint shit compared to this guy. This guy is technically superior in every way and is more creative, dynamic, unique and distinctive... no question about the fact MP dont own THIS level of ability! :)

  • To the pointless discussion below: Being famous doesn't mean you are good. Au Contraire; most famous musicians suck, want proof? turn on your TV.

  • @rodilla15 gotta admit, i didnt know about bobby, but i do now!!! i hate rating drummers, thats just not what music is about. but i'll tell you, i've seen thomas lange and mike mangini live, and they both blew me away! that being said, it's really abit much. it's like when yngwie yawned after playing eruption, sure he's got more technique than ed, but right a song for fuck sakes. just my opinion.

  • @powerbass12 dude dont underestimate portnoy, he can come up with a heck lot of weird timings, heard dance of eternity? metropolis? those things have lots of polys and odd meters and is yet enjoyable to listen to, not dissing bobby here, he may be a great player but I feel he lacks soul when playing, soul is something people like Gavin Harrison, portnoy, carey, peart etc have

  • Bobby is one damn good drummer, but to be honest I think it's just overdone.

He's probably better than Mike Portnoy, but Mike can hold back if nescesary.

I'm gonna get some youtubers on my back for showing my opinion.

  • Can yall just talk about bobby?

  • @powerbass12

Hell, the entire clip has me going O.o lol. And I'm someone who can typically figure out what a drummer is doing - even if I can't pull it off myself. Most of Jarzombek's stuff (at least with Spastic Ink) eludes me completely. I actually have another one of his clips from this same "session" on my youtube channel... and it's equally mind-boggling to me.

  • @powerbass12

I agree. I think Portnoy has the creativity to come up with some great parts, and still does from time to time. It just seems that he - and all of Dream Theater, really - are almost going through the motions these days. Their music - despite being progressive - has become really predictable and actually boring. It's been a long time since I've heard them write something epic that kicked my ass technically *and* musically on a level even close to what their earlier work did.

  • Favorite part of nearly all time: 2:02 to 2.05. Awesome.

  • fire and fury signify very little

  • he is a drumming god! Peart ain't got shit on him!

  • The drumming levels:

    Ulrich =========> Portnoy =====> Jarzombek

  • LOVE IT

  • I don't think the drummers themselves ever get involved in arguments about who is best, so why the fuck do the fans do it? Less time talking about stupid shit, more time drumming.

  • @mailmepizza right on.

  • @mailmepizza I agree. Less time talking about stupid shit, more time drumming. And more oddtime drumming!

  • @mailmepizza Brilliant comment, couldn´t agree more...

  • @mailmepizza Why the fans do it? Because they ARE fans! We judge everything around us every day - otherwise we could not survive. It's the basic requirement of life to be able to judge what is better and what is worse; otherwise life would become extinct, so its not stupid shit like you say. For Bobby, it must be pretty lonely at the top.

  • There's very few drummers who could play this at this level for Spastic Ink songs. Virgil Donati, Marco Minneman, Mike Mangini are there. Charley Zeleny has proven himself w/ Blotted Science. Gavin Harrison does some great complex stuff, but this type of prog-metal might not be his style. Peart and Portnoy would need a few years of lessons and woodshedding to handle the Spastic Ink parts that Bobby plays.

  • @cheezruff Couldn't agree more.

  • Stop comparing, people. Everyone drums differently. Since when is it a fucking competition? Mike's good at what he does and Bobby is too. I'm telling you, it's the fans which tarnish good players' names, Why can't people just sit back and enjoy? SHEESH

  • He's a very special drummer;his rhythm is phenomenal and so many drummer's forget that is their job especially in the jazz realm, sorry drums are rhythm not lead instrument's but you can kick ass solo on them like Bobby is showing here.

  • his setups always look uncomfortable...maybe he's just so good that he has to set stuff up that way so he doesn't tear a hole in the cosmos? ha...i love that little splash in the middle...

  • Dimebag and Vinnie or Eddie and Alex of progressive\technical metal

  • Vinnie and Alex wish that were true.

  • He was sent here by aliens to advance the human race

  • Oh, thats why, incredible!!!!

  • Does anyone know where I can find these drum tabs?

  • Just use your eyes, ears and patience. That's the best way to do. Goodluck!

  • @PanterAmetal100 Do you think you could

lean this song by ear? lol

    Pantera rules!

  • @sebz661 I don't think anyone can break it down enough to transcribe it.

  • @SuperMardiGrasBros Yeah thats true.

  • @ Anonymous: Hellhammer was my favourite drummer, i tought he was inimitable, this way of playing fast.. frenetical blasts and drumming.. and especialy on speed he was out of touch.

After i discovred this awesome player Bobby who plays a music which is really more complex than the style hellhammer's playing.. you know black metal.... Bobby's playing is very agressive and very smoothy at the same time, and really impossible to imitate.

  • @Anonymous, am i the only one who's never heard of Hellhammer and Asgeir Mickelson?lol

  • @JeremyMicahSimon Helhammer and Asgeir are both Norwegian. Hellhammer is mostly a black metal drummer and nowhere near as technically proficient as Bobby Jarzombek. Asgeir is best known for his work with Spiral Architect, a prog/tech metal band with one album out. Excellent drummer but not in Jarzombek's league.

  • This is beyond comprehension.

  • hardest song ever to play on drums.. lol person A : "have you heard a new jarzombek song that has an intro like trenenuzizuzezeizezneizeziezien.."

    person B : "whatta f*** r u saying man.."

  • look at him hunched over playing like that. He looks like a mad scientist! hhaah

  • Sry, I pressed "post comment" accidentally...

But what I saw about this drummer that his drumming position is extremely non-ergonomic.. He'll end up to neck surgery in some year :o He should play the back straight, not like that... It's unhealthy!

But anyway, I know this guy's a maniac in drums, but I can't compare him to my fav drummers like Hellhammer and Asgeir Mickelson, because they all got their unique style of playing. This guy's great, but his position on drumplaying creeps me here :(

  • I know this guy from Spastic Ink and this man has really inhuman rhytm knowledge. I can't compare this guy to many drummers

  • lol at all this portnoy debate. portnoys my personal fave but bobby is a mile a head of portnoy in terms of technical ability. But portnoy is more than just the drummer he writes lyrics, focuses on the other musicians in DT and is the best at his thing.

  • Portnoy's lyrics skills are not anywhere near to his skills in drumming. Sorry but he should stick to what he does best. Writing lyrics should be left to professionals. I like his drumming but just like COBHC279 says, others are even better - and I agree.

  • What's sad is that most people have to have their respective "favorite drummer" as "the best drummer" in the world or it just doesn't fulfill their need.

I LOVE Mike Portnoy but couldn't agree with you more. Bobby is heads and shoulders above most of the pack, but that isn't the point as you know.

Drumming isn't a sport. Music itself is about taste, not right or wrong.

Portnoy is a rock genius regardless of whether or not someone might be more skilled.

Bobby is the balls though, is he not, lol.

  • Awsome!

    Period...

  • Gavin Harrison can do all this, Bobby and Gavin are the best Prog Rock drummers ever!

  • Jarzombek is better than portnoy in every way shape and form.... No one compares to Virgil Donati though.

  • he just plays really fast man.,.. It's all about independence with drums man.

  • No, he's not just a speed guy. Apparently you haven't heard bands besides Mayhem that he's in, like Arcturus and Winds. He's very versatile.

  • but Portnoy's nothing compared to drummers like Gavin Harrison, Bobby Jarzombek, Charlie Zeleny, Virgil Donati, etc!

  • I only dream of writing stuff this intense

  • My favorite drummer out there.. This guy is retarded.

And these youtube arguments are even more retarded. Who fucking cares who played what. Music is music, not a competition, so give it a rest.

  • one of my fovarites to he is insane

  • Comparing Portnoy with Jarzombek is quite hard. Bobby is EXREMEL technical while Mike probably has more of a wide talent and can play basically everything he wants to.

hard to say who's "best" but as far as I can see Bobby can play more complex stuff. Wether that's the definition of a good drummer I'll leave to each individual as it's a matter of taste.

Would be fun to se Aquanet in Rock Band though :P

  • I was a devout fan of Mike Portnoy, until I found about this dude. This dude totally pwns Portnoy. On a level "Way too technical to be commercially viable." Read into it..... That's why he can only put out DVDs demonstrating his technique. (ie: "School")

  • technically bobby owns mike. what bobby plays is much sicker.

  • mike portnoy? hahaha dont fuck.. are you stupid or only crazy

  • Not *THAT* far, if by any. It really depends on whose taste you like the most. The truth is that they're both truly expansive on their own level. Jarzombek eats dudes like Portnoy for breakfast on technique and posture. Portnoy, on the other hand, wins at "self control" and the ability to shift focus to other instruments; thus "musicality". Nevertheless, in a drum solo match, (cont...)

  • I'd yell as loud as I can at Jarzombek, because he'd likely play everything significant that Portnoy could do at first listen and then *ADD* shit to it to give it that *personalized* touch. Portnoy would end up putting his sticks down and claiming, "He copied me."

  • simply due to *inability to comprehend* what just occured.

  • La cago este wn!! toca pero demasiado genial!!

  • Can't go a progressive youtube vid without any debate about the good ol' Dream Theater!

  • I'm with you if u r talking abt the latest albums for DT but the old ones are amazing sometimes repeated but in a new way but come on its DT hehe :P

  • I guess if Dream Theatre where musicians, they would write music. Like Spastic Ink does.

  • Y do u think that Dream Theater are not musicians? I guess both are unique in their own way. Comparing DT with Spasitc Ink is tht DT are more melodic than Spastic Ink. While both have great techniques.

  • Well, they are amazing on their instrument when it comes to technique. But in my opinion they lack musical creativity and taste.

  • Stop debating, if you dont like this music don't listen. It's just a different style. just like alot of people think rap has no creativity (like me) but i'm not gonna argue it. It's just opinion.

  • All music is different. I like both bands, and I hope they stay the way they are. Just because you like one band better or even if one band is better, why the hell do you think anyones going to change the way they play they're music?

  • holy shit!! right there with danny carey, imo!!!

  • Bobby is WAY beyond Danny Carey in terms of sheer ability and just as creative on the kit as Danny.

  • What's up? I haven't heard anything Bobby's done except the Halford stuff, I need to check some songs out, He was in a band called Riot, yes? and Spastic Ink..

  • Bobby is back with Riot now. He is also with Fates Warning and Sebastian Bach. He did 2 albums with Spastic Ink - the song in this video is from the 2nd Ink album. The stuff with Ink is by far his most technical drumming. Other than that his best drumming is on Riot's 'The Privilege of Power'. 2 other great releases with Bobby are Riot - 'Thundersteel' and Rob Rock - 'Holy Hell' (w/ Roy Z from Halford on guitar). If you are a Halford/Priest fan both those should be right up your alley.

  • what the heck are you talking about. Danny Carey plays a completley different style.

  • I'm talking ability NOT technique ; )

  • Well how do you know he's able to even play this stuff. haha. I don't really care. Idk why I replied to ur comment.

  • Awesome dynamics and cymbal work...Bobby is one of the best drummers in the world.

  • holy fucking mother fucking shit dude

  • 2:03 ... WOW!

  • insane timing, Bobby is tha man

  • Jarzombek and Portnoy are both excellent drummers.

  • yeah but portnoy makes just more linear music (dream theater, neal morse, transatlantic...) but he's very talented, bobby too

  • ever heard andromeda's Thomas Lejon? Hes very impressive too.

  • Whoa.

  • 1:14 to 1:50 seriously, this bit of the song gives me an erection. What a groove and what a riff. It's proggy it sounds thrash it sounds funky, damn it))

Then you got to deal with those rfboys who say MPortnoy is the best prog drummer xDDDD

Yee, and this guy chops his extremities off meanwhile XDDD

    BJ Incredible drumming.

  • lol best concentration face

  • He used to teach at H&H? I didn't know. He's got a studio now and that's where i go.

  • 2:03 to 2:04 IS FFFFFFUCKING SOOOOO AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I never, EVER get tired of watching that...

  • I actually take lessons from Ron (Jarzombek), and the solo from this song is one he had me learn from practice. It's pretty cool that ive got a guitar teacher that actually played with a buncho people, cuz i know some people who get taught out of a book. So it's pretty kool.

  • man thats awesome! tell him hes the man!

  • No problem man, im sure he'll appreciate it.

  • 0:12 to 0:17 is imposible

  • haha oh yea...

  • If you wanna hear more straightforward Bobby playing listen to Touched By The Crimson King by Demons & Wizards.

  • blotted science is fucking cool. im not really diggin spastic though. its tech and cool but it lacks power. to me anyways

  • To me, this and Blotted Science is possibly the best music I've ever heard. Or at least it captures my attention the most. Spastic Ink (especially Ink Complete) and Blotted Science both display such a beautiful complex madness, while still somehow sounding super badass. Takes me like 10 listens of a song before I start to fully appreciate it, and to me, that equals f@$#ing good music! I will never understand why people can hate this music, but hey that's just me.

  • haha yeah 10 listens at least ! that's why peaple don't like this when they first hear it...

  • because 95% of the people are not musically talented enough to understand complex music.

  • because 95% of people are normal. lol, I don't get the eliticism people have over such technical music. And don't get me wrong, I love Spastic Ink and I find them very accesible to my taste, but just saying, the average person has a good excuse for not liking it. They have "better" things to worry about :P

  • there isn't anything better than progressive music.

  • eliticism = not a word

also, yeah a lot of prog people are elitists. I love prog, but i can understand people who don't. Its just a choice people make between music that's better listened to actively or passively. its called music THEORY for a reason. they aren't rules for making good music, they are guidelines for making music that sounds good to an ear that's been raised in the environment that that music comes from. for example, Indian music theory is completely different from ours.

  • I meant elitism. You still understood what I meant in the end.

As long as we're at it:

    Learn to capitalize :P

  • Bobby is clearly a maticulous technician but I hate this music. It is cerebral but dead. I wish he'd play straight time to see how that sounds. I'd bet it might sound odd. Bobby is still a killer player.

  • He plays it straight with plenty of other bands. It would be a crime if someone this talented decided to be Phil Rudd instead of doing something like Spastic Ink.

  • one the best drummer ever ;D

  • my favourite drummer - insanely co-ordinated and so fast. Try playing this and you will understand.

  • when i had my set, i played open handed. inspired by bobby of course. It was so fun, hardly anybody does it, yet it makes so much sense.

  • i fucking know, i play open handed, its the best thing that ever happened to my drumming, so much freedom like instantly.

  • well He's playing drums since he was 8 or something and now about 43 or something I don't remember now, so, practice, practice and practice
