@TruthHidden Ummm... about a tsp of coriander powder instead of the seeds. Leave the black cardamoms out - they don't taste the same as cardamom powder.
Nihari is my all-time favourite curry. Such a delicious and unique flavour.
I make my own version of it using lamb (I tend to cook it for about 8 hours, then eat it the day after). I've always used Star Anise instead of fennel seeds though. I think it tastes a bit nicer. Having said that, I've not made it with fennel for a long time, so I may try it again the next time I make it just to see what I think.
It's cute and informative as for getting to know the actual spices cause I always use those ready to cook spice mixes BUT ... Nihari IS a Beef dish, you don't make your Nehari with chicken and as she said that it take hours to get this ready so just imagine where those tender chicken breast cubes will go in 3/4 hours. it's not like you CAN use beef, you have to or it really won't be Nehari.
@speedxtreem The original version of Nihari uses beef or lamb (or sometimes goat) for the reasons you describe. Funny thing is that every time I've had nihari in hotels in Pakistan it's always been chicken!
Jesus! I go green even in the idea of having this for breakfast! On the bright side, no amount of coffee is enough to pop your eyes straight open for good, as a spoonful of this is capable of :P Love your videos :)
@freebee007 This is the 1 reason that its impossible to go on a formal diet in USA, cuz I can never figure out the portions and size and count veg/fruit in paki cooking. Since 1 dish cud consist of tomato, onion, lentil, veg, etc. the size of bread is very tricky too. Good Luck!
@freebee007 If you eat this every day you'll probably explode. If you are on a strict weight-watchers plan I guess it won't feature this kind of food, but my attitude is to eat a balanced diet and to try and get exercise. I enjoy this kind of food maybe once a week.
How does your spice mix compare to the Shan bought mix? I only ask as I usually cook this with back leg of mutton and cook it slow for about 5 hours. Would be very dissapointed if I loose whatever the hell is in that mix that gives it something different to every other curry I've ever had having waited all that time :P It's my favourite!
@RodHullIOnceWasHim This nihari is really quite spicy and has some very earthy flavours. The black cardamom, cinnamon and cloves combine to give it a unique flavour imho. Try it!
Hi Titli, I made this curry last night with caserole Beef. After sealing the meat and adding the flour and water, chucked it into the oven for 3 hours - it was fantastic - thank you so much. Tomorrow I might try the Kofta curry, I have 7 weeks off work (Lecturer holidays!) so should make it through all your recipes by then!!!
@harrysmithhush I've looked closely at this... They are red onions so look dark to start with at the edges. Once added to the nihari spice mix they look black, but that is the spice mix and not the onion! When I remake this in HD I need to do something about the light...
No problem. All you need to provide is a time, a date, a place, a ring, a Desi wedding buffet for all my subscribers, and book the honeymoon. I'm waiting... *drums fingers*
Oh, and of course you will need to keep me in the manner to which I wish to become accustomed.
I found the FB page and have passed you along to a few foodie friends of mine that I think will enjoy your work a whole lot. Thank you for all you do :)
Mmmm.. looks delicious like always, Titli! Thank you for all of your posts over the the last week. I've realy enjoyed them. If you can't find coriander seeds can you sub it for coriander powder, since it will be grinded up? Thanks again, Titli. You are the best! :)
Is there something about this type of curry that makes it a breakfast meal? Is it really as spicy as your last kitchen scene suggests? Made your beef biryani for Steph and the kids tonight -- they really enjoyed it. I had a leek quiche. :)
It is a bit spicy. I think it became popular for breakfast as traditionally it was cooked very slowly overnight. You can cook the chicken version for about 3 hours if you feel like it, and the beef version can be 6 hours plus.
Since I do not have whole Cardamom or Coriander seeds, how much of each ground will I need? Thanks :)
