@lukebyankee When I was but a child, I learned what true acting really was by watching your mother in THE BAD SEED - she broke my heart. In '95, I saw her in a hotel lobby in NYC & wanted so badly to tell her this. But she looked busy & I lost my nerve, didn't want to bother her. I regret missing my chance now. God bless her!
@lukebyankee I just read your book! Fantastic! Loved your mother's work ever since The Mary Tyler Moore Show and Burnt Offerings . The last time I saw her on TV was a minor role on "One Life to Live". Her role was very minor but there was such empathy to her character that I wanted the focus of the show to go towards her in the "Alison Perkins Stolen baby" storyline !
I've always thought Robert Duvall over-rated but never reallised what a bore he was until now. And talk about lack of class or just plain good manners.
"Butterflies" was a great, under rated movie. Anybody who missed this one needs to see it. Funny, sad and gripping. Eileen did a great job. Watch "The Bad Seed" to see her in another role that will bring a tear to most anybody. "Heartbreak Ridge" was her last great job. She still made it real. internationaldave@gmail.com
My condolences on the loss of your Mother. She was a brilliant actress who brought so many people happiness ... especially with comedy. Her role in the Five Mrs. Buchanans was priceless. A show that was canceled way too soon.
@cerclerouge Susu was totally kick ass in Fat City it's a horrible shame Hollywood never gave her the great roles she truly deserved. The great thing is she became a cult icon making whatever she appeared in a memorable performance.
I can tell you that Shelley certainly took it as an insult. She was pissed. Duvall claimed James Caan was making faces at him and he hadn't realized what he'd said. He apologized to Shelley who accepted. But remained pissed. That was Shelley!
Wow. It's one thing to disagree with a performance being nominated - and Winters, a deserving nominee every other time she was up for the Oscar, was a filler nomination in a weak category - but Duvall's guffaw is downright awful.
I m Eileen Heckart's son. The reason Robert Duvall laughed had nothing to do with Shelley Winters. Duvall locked eyes in the audience with James Caan, with whom he'd just shot The Godfather. Caan made a rude gesture (a private joke) and Duvall lost it. He called Ms. Winters to apologize the next day but it was too late. My book, "Just Outside the Spotlight" has many great stories about that night and how amazing it was for my mom and my family.
@lukebyankee Shelley was the favorite that year as TPA was the big hit during Oscar season. People were already comparing her to Walter Brennan. Eileen's win was a deserved surprise, 16 years after her first nom. One of the true greats. She could read a phonebook and keep your interest. Met her many times. Last time I saw her I took my daughter backstage to see her after THE WAVERLY GALLERY. What a Class Act! A shame they never did a film with her. Her performance was beyond words.
@lukebyankee I finally saw your mother's great performance in Butterflies are Free and then researched her film credits. I remembered she was great in many of those films. How right you are to be proud of her. She was really a fine performer!
@lukebyankee I had the great good fortune to work with your mother for a few months when I was a DGA trainee, on a short-lived tv series called "Trauma Center." She was a model of professionalism, honesty, and humor.

I don't know why Shelley Winters seemed so pissed. Was it because of Robert Duvall or that she lost? Come on, she'd already won twice.

Man I wished there would have been a three way tie with Jeannie Berlin, Susu Tyrrell and Eileen Heckart!!!!!
johnyzero2000 10 months ago
well it's a shame Duvall ruined the moment for her regardless, especially as the least deserving performance there was not Winters, but Susan Tyrell.

What a huge disgrace when Robert Duvall started laughing when he mentioned Shelley Winters for the Poseidon Adventure.

@rickram1961 Shelly was a very good actress, but out there. She also liked the bottle, used to see her alot
in that restaurant on Santa Monica Blvd in later years. Funny tho, a real riot.
