How do I teach him the rules? He is fine and happy with my boyfriend so long as I'm not around. As soon as he hears or sees me, he turns into attack bird V 2.20
@verticalsmurf So it sounds like you have "taught" him to be defensive around you. Remember that every behavior that is reinforced is likely reoccur. This means that he is aggressive with your boyfriend and then gets attention from you, you are probably reinforcing the aggressive behavior. Instead try to let the fun end for him when he is aggressive make sure he gets attention from you when he behaves a bit nicer. This is a boundary issue. You have not taught him what the acceptable behavior is.
Do you have a problem with bonding? I have a Sun Conure and he is intent on harming my boyfriend or anyone who comes near me. He is such a sweet bird with me but even if someone walks by on the street, he goes to the window and tries to get at them in a territorial response. I went on holidays and left him with my parents, within 2 days he was snuggling with my Mum and perching on my Dads foot to preen. How can I get him to realise that I'm not his mate, and get him to be nice to my boyfriend?
@verticalsmurf Whomever the bird is bonded to has the most influence with the bird. That means t is your job to set the rules for the birds behavior when it is near you. There are times when the bird behaves better around other people, including your boyfriend so pay close attention to what is going on around you and the bird at those times and then be ready to offer it something it wants and values. In this way you are reinforcing it for doing it right. Then set this up as often as possible.
@chrisbiro1 - He is bonded to me and I think that is the problem. He is fine with other people if I'm not there, I've hidden in a room and listened to him get along well with my boyfriend, but as soon as I make any noise, he starts screaming and will attack anyone within reach untill he is on my shoulder.
What a great treat for the macaws! Parrots are so loyal and lovey they can even be trusted to fly free and still return to you...what a nice way to show your appreciation for their loyalty...:)

@nomi660 I would not call a scarlet macaw more social than other macaws. Mine have all been outgoing and sometimes willing to nip me to tell me they did not like something. I do not consider this a bad thing but it is interesting to see them communicate this way. They seem to be somewhat fearless, which guess a bright red and blue bird would need to be. I love flying scarlets. I think they are the most beautiful birds available to fly. Chris
Birds of prey are always a concern. But the concern is much like worrying about a bad auto accident. You know it can happen but the odds are greatly in your favor that it will not. I have watched over 30 hawk encounters with my birds and so far no fatalities. The keys I believe are peak physical fitness, getting plenty of flying time during natural fledging age and fellow flock members keeping a keene eye on the skies. But in the end it is a risk we must come to terms with. Chris
I have a year old blue and gold, and hes very attached to me, and he has a leash but its winter in mass so im going to wait till spring to take him out. But any tips on training him inside?
I would encourage you to read up on clicker training. We use a clicker as part of our training and we encourage others to do so also. It really helps you both communicate more clearly. Poor communication is often part of the problem people have with their birds. I would also recommend the book Don't Shoot The Dog by Karen Pryor. Chris
I love how the pictures have the browns of the desert, and then a beautiful colored bird in them. Some of them look like they could only be paintings they are so beautiful. They are so amazing that it boggles the mind!
You should see it live! The camera only captures a tiny sliver of what can be seen. The stop motion action of a camera shows us things we cannot normally see. But it also fails to show most of what can be seen when standing there in person. Flying our birds like this has been the most amazing thing I have done in my life. I like to think the birds agree. Chris
I'm going to will my parrots to you, so they can go to heaven when I die! Thanks so much for these beautiful images-I watch it every morning, just to start my day.
You have the luckiest parrots alive. <3

Thx for your frank reply.
In NS, Canada, on our lake we see Bald Eagles and Hawks almost daily.
They occasionally venture closer to check out our YC Mini Macaw in his 'Aviator' harness - with me close at hand.
While I doubt I will try 'Free Flight' am working on 'recall', "just in case".
(We are surrounded by evergreen forests as well, might be tricky locating a 'small frightened green bird'.) I surely do admire your efforts.

Great job! Susan and Chris! What fantastic images of you and your birds enjoying those open spaces!
I realize you have all worked hard to do 'Free Flight'. Didn't just happen overnite.
And I kinda like the song, 'River Deep'.It often runs through my head and I see you guys with your birds while I hum it.
1 question, do you have any concerns re birds of prey at all?

Beautiful photos however, the music sure doesn't fit. It's shame. It ruins the whole thing.
