Great touch with the discman! it gave me a sense of the sign holders style, theres this website called BIGSTARtv they're holding a online film festival and you can submit internationally and the grand prize is 50K!
Beautiful film. I love the close cropped shots, the lovely little acting touches, the great eye misdirections and the lovely flowing editing. I've watched this about four times in a row now, and I'll be watching out for you in the future. That's feature-film talent there...
cant believe people have picked up on the swastika, yet no-one has spotted the biggest "Boom In Shot" ever... it seems to elude people for some reason.. first person to spot it, comment with the time...
I suppose the shot was an accident that was too good to throw away over the boom?
Before hitting "post", I looked at the comments and realized I'm not the first to mention the time to you. Thanks for making take a second look anyway.
@TobyAshenheim failed to spot the boom yet, but I'm sure I'll watch this perfect little piece more than once (couldn't miss the swastika though!). It's got a lot of quirky charm, the right tone and rhythm; just enough style - but with a sort of awkward discreetness about it - and subtance - but it doesn't get heavy either - just the right precarious equilibrium of odds and ends... Brilliant. Thanks.
Yeah, we borrowed a real sign for 2 days, and it was already carved in there... its little grimy details like that that really help sell the bleakness of this particular job. it works for me anyway. this film was about using what was already there and incorporating it into a short fiction.. e.g the man who holds the sign for her at the end - that was genuinely unscripted kindness of a passer by, and we happened to be rolling when he stepped in.
really simple actually, I just filmed my subject on a locked of tripod for about 2-3 minutes, standard 1/48th shutter speed, no in camera effects, just make sure your subject stands as still as possible... then in post (FCP) right clicked on my clip in the sequence, selected speed, and changed the speed to whatever looked fast enough 300%, 500% whatever looks good for you...
...Now that looks pretty flat and practical, so then i went in to Effects > Time, and added "Time Trails". play around with the settings till it suits your shot. this adds the effect of a really slow shutter, and the interesting ghosting effects on moving parts of the image. hope that helps.
From 4:15 to 4:26 the boom is clearly in the shot... Good stuff

@TobyAshenheim If you refer to the boom shot at 4:17, it is obviously done on purpose, you can see the camera as well.

@CoolThatSounds doesn't Swastika represent eternity in Buddhism? I mean I know it's a Nazi symbol too, but from what I remember Nazi's stole the sign
