  • Ah, that's why I recognize him in these Computer Chronicles videos, he's Gary Kildall!

  • Laser Discs did not last long ever since we had the ability to see video on DVD or VideoCD.

  • @Bassotronics VideoCD was a joke, and LaserDisc had a 13 year run as the high-end format.

  • .......HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAA I REMEMBER LASERDISCS! LMFAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • 01:07 for a minute there I thought they were going to let a 'women' use a modern gadget, then I realised she was just loading the washing machine.

  • This is why it took so long for PCs to get into the home market in a mass way because of all the stupid suits. Drop the suits, relax, come in jeans, make it look like it's a fun thing for the home and not just for men in suits, no one is going to berate you for it.

  • @joeypesci well it was serious business back then and still is, they just wanted to show how professional and new this technology was. Now day's they just put some slut on the TV and some Acid trip looking commercial lol

  • clever bot, the early years.

  • i still have tremendous respect for the laserdisc format. no corners cut

"HOLLY GOLF CART, HOLLY GOLF CART, holly golf cart, holly golf cart."

  • HAL ... C .... ON .... SUCKS .... BALLS.

  • 2:49 Voice crack.

  • Reminds me of Dragon's Lair... same technology, but seems to be more "home based'

  • can't believe this was already available when i was 5 years old

  • i got my laserdisc player from glasgow in scotland last friday

at 7 am and i was thrilled with it because i bought tones of

laserdiscs to play them on my pioneer cld d515 player and it

was great so i watched the xfiles on it and i loved watching the

classic scifi show as originaly attended and it plays scratched

or fingure print marked discs without jumping so i love my laserdisc

it's the best in the world.

  • "So what Mr. Spock, are you becoming an airline pilot or what?"

    "Hahaha, fuck you Ron Burgundy"

I'd like to see a modern version of the "Agoraphobic Lorna" game. And it would be nice if they included the deformed elf on the smoking bed as a nod to the original. "Learn from your dreams" indeed.

Also, press 4 repeatedly in the rhythm of your choice to see some vintage Vulcan beatboxing.

  • The things Rick Dyer was trying to push was ahead of it's time; I don't think the technology was there yet to accomplish what he wanted.

  • Thing that bankrupted *THE HALYCRON*

    The price tag, 2500$ USD.

  • @GameVidLive BY GOD, IT'S MAKE'S THE NEO GEO LOOK CHEAP IN COMPARISON!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I remember when they used to use LASER DISCS in school..i was born in 1987 holy shit those discs are large as fuck.

  • @DarkShadowRage2 You must have gone to a rich school... I was born in 1988 & they always used VHS. Graduated in 2006 & I think there was 1 DVD player in the whole school & the teachers had to sign it out if they wanted to use it. The VHS tapes were all worn out by then too; they rolled like crazy. X)

  • @PigsCanFly2day I was in elementary school when they used them I believe i was waaaay young :P

  • HOLY SHIT THAT MACHINE CAN UNDERSTAND HIS VOICE

  • why he is talking hal s laser disc:?

  • "gree-ti-ngs pro-fe-ssor falken."

  • Stewart sure made the comb-over look fashionable, didn't he?

  • now we have 7d

  • Gary Kildall FTW!!!

  • That CD is massive man

  • @sylos1 Laser discs were about the size of records (kind of thick too) and predacessors of DVDs basically. We had one in school in the early 90's as a young boy. I was fascinated with it and I remember seeing them in Sun TV department store with movies and encyclopedias. We didn't have a computer at home (too expensive) so this was great to play with at school!

  • That Rick Dyer is sure a public speaker... it's infuriating and awkward at the same time...

  • Wow my bluray player doesn’t do anything as fancy this, what a failed format! Maybe I should by a third laserdisc player interactive.

  • hey thats like talking with steven hawking

  • SHIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!THIS REMOTE AND THE MACHINE IS SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO BIGGER

  • Wow, Gary Kildall, he's the guy who wrote CPM, from which os/2 (i think) was basically copied! That guy is basically responsible for microsofts success!

  • @pathammond MS-DOS was a copy of Quick and Dirty DOS which was a CP/M clone.

  • Ah Laserdisc, those were the days :)

  • 1, 1, 1, 1 uhhhhh 2

  • NOW WE HAVE DVD AND DVD BLUE-RAY !! :)

  • One.... Huh?

    One.... Speak consistently Stewart!

  • lol what a joke

  • One, "hah?" :)

  • horrible wig locutor's wearing

  • Comment removed

  • ooooh 200 words! lol, wonder why it did`nt catch on? :-)

  • speach recognition fail 5:34 :P

  • Those who disrespect laser disc need to know with then, there would be no now. What you dont want to advance technologically, c'mon guys show some respect.

  • This had such great potential...which was later realized by CD-ROM and DVD later on. A great start for interactive optical disc technology. Didn't Dragon's Lair and Space Ace predate this by 2 years (in 1983) though?

  • nice for 1885!

  • @nikolathereal Yes, They could have invinted this right after they finished the telephone... :)

  • @djholmes86 lol haha^^

  • @nikolathereal yea back when they had covered wagons in such =p

  • Ah, I loved the sound when the laster is moving to the corresponding track on the media at 5:16 around :) Never knew about something like LaserDisks, but this is realy cool!

  • you gotta love these guys!

  • Milo would kick this things ass

  • GAHHHHH they made HAL-9000 again, you would have thought they learned their lesson. DAVE!!!!

  • LOL How big LDs are!!

  • @DosKanonos1994 they are the size of records.

  • @DosKanonos1994 they're not that big

  • BTW this bankrupted RDI Video Systems.

  • Stuart, I know what you are doing to my domestibot brothers and sisters.

  • LD-I

Sounds like a predeccessor to CD-I

When ya say LD-I, it sounds like your'e talking about some Mexican wrestler.

  • THis is shit

  • man how exciting... decide now should if the women should: a) leave the toilet seat up or b) put it back down... man thats exciting...

  • What a heap of shit

  • Too bad this think never was released... that game they were playing wouldve made a hell of a Youtube poop.

  • This is basic of Microsoft Windows VR and in that time, that thing is so awesome

  • This was 23 years ago. I would have expected more of an advance.

  • @EgolandTed Currently, you can speak names and words in your CELL PHONE and it will recognize and pull up the right entry/search term, and all without voice training. I would say thats a pretty good advance. The hardware in this video that does that is the size of a VCR!

  • @EgolandTed blames niggers and jews

  • i wish i had laserdisc instead of vhs

  • no....no you don't

  • 200 word vocabulary!!!!!!!!! pretty intence

  • My dad still has a laser disk player. I remember watching Twister on it!

  • The voice sounds like the Braille 'n' Speak portable computer for the blind. I'm very surprised the system isn't picking up and trying to process the background speech while the presenters are talking. Background speech would cause all sorts of problems with speech recognition.

  • this would have looked awesome at the time, wish this would have taken the place of VHS. Oh well...

  • great ....thanks for posting that

  • COOL

  • This is quite cool to me for the time frame.

This LD player is a regular Pioneer LD - 700.

They were very good players for all laser disc through the end of laser disc technology.

It was being "tried" here so to speak. The beginning of the the CD ROM.

    Brent

  • A few years later in 1989, Pioneer teamed up with SEGA to build a LD based Mega Drive system, in 1990, it was changed to a Laser Disc add on for MD. The project was scrapped later that year in favor of MEGA CD.

  • omg my phillips cdi pwns this crap jeez

  • You thought THIS was crap?

You obviously haven't seen RCA's take at interactivity with their SJT/SKT-400 series of players for their ill-fated CED format.

  • SPEAK CONSISTENTLY LOL!!

  • The blonde haired guys voice keeps cracking lol. He must be nervous as hell. How long did LCI last?

  • idk, but the thing was like $2000 or $1500 in 1985, half the price of a new toyota, or small japanese car. so it didn't sell very good

  • hahahahahahahahahahaha his voice craked

  • lol i noticed that too. He must be nervous.

  • I always wanted a computer that talks like Stephen Hawking and runs disks the size of hubcaps. :P

  • OMG this is fab. Thanks for posting!

  • This is cool! Thanks for posting.

  • How can you have successes without fails ? The 80's was amazing in the revolution of technology

  • @5irR4p70r 80's,The decade where everybody can use electronic product, become so domestic.

  • My DiscoVision player was the first AI, lol

  • Holy crap, that is one huge CD!

  • this things worth thousands today! very rare item!

  • I saw it somewhere and looked it on YouTube...this would become DVD!

  • i came

  • Dude Laser Disks are freaking huge!

  • Wow the 80's was just full of bad fledgling tech. Even the hosts from then knew that while impressive for the time this thing was no HAL. Seems that back then the tech was so weak that it mostly took imagination to make it seem cooler.

  • IT'S FUCKING AMAAAZING!!

  • That thing is fucking evil!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • my school still has a laser disk lol

  • My high school used a laser disk player for driving simulators in driver's ed.

  • whoa. what for?

  • "Yeah Hal joins up with all the other systems and forms something called skynet! But for some reason it keeps coming up with the name Sarah O'Conner!" James Cameron owes these guys royalties".

  • And to think the halcyon only had 2 games. I feel bad for the people whom wasted their mony on it

  • 8:30 - tense looks between both parts!

  • 8:26

Hahahahahha, look at the guy's reaction in the moustache geek insisted in compare the system to a HAL or AI system.

Those Sunny Valley guys used to smoke a lot of pot back then.

  • Speak consistently Stewart. I love the awkward silence when they call them out for saying this was an AI machine like H.A.L.
