If you asked me to distinguish death metal from other extra heavy genres of metal though then I wouldn't really be able on any sort of technical level, I just have a vague sense of when something is black metal or thrash metal or death etc. I'm more into rock with heavy aspects and sweeter melodic components like Tool or Kyuss etc. Deicide are another ultra-heavy band that I just don't get :P
