lulz dem christians on youtube, not a single one of them have idea what is the actual teaching of their religion, bible studies, works of church fathers... Extremely funny stuff for someone with a religious studies degree.
@Afewdollarsmore1 Buddhism teaches you to confront your fears and learn everything about, to know them and when you meet them in reality to be prepared for them. Christianity teaches people to completely put their faith in something that they've never seen proof of.
@patronizeyouforfun Do not lean upon your own understanding is what you are referring to right? Thats is like one line in the bible, did you ever read what else it teaches? Look buddhism is a very mild religion, it fails to deal with so many issues humans face as a race, its more concerned about the individual rather than the whole. If you want to learn more truth then the next step is Jesus, this was a truly amazing man who transcended way beyond nirvana straight to the right hand of God.
Never trust a man who points his finger around, Jesus warned of such people. Buddhism offers nothing but avoidance and fantasy, christianity deals with suffering properly and addresses all issues by facing them head on not running to your room to meditate all day! Wake up people and learn about why Jesus came to help us, and not why buddah sat under a tree in a fantasy all day! If you want to avoid issues in life then yes buddism is for you, if you want the hardcore truth then learn about Jesus.
@Afewdollarsmore1 The hardcore thruth about Jesus? From age 12 to 28/30 he studied at a university in India where he was taught all the things he was known for: healing, levitation etc. Every person can learn this. It depens from person to person how fast they'll learn. No church taught the ppl this because their churches would fall. Jesus wasn't just born with his skills because he was of God. He worked hard on himself, for several lifetimes to achieve the status of "Christ".
@FlipflopFlippies yes and im saying learn about his teaching, it is the way and the truth, but only if you can deal with it, if not stick to buddism or yoga. To know Jesus you need to understand suffering but not just understand it but experience it properly then you are qualified to teach it. Condition the mind for great suffering and your getting close untill then keep meditating.
@Afewdollarsmore1 That is not what Buddhism is about and that's not what meditation is about. It prepares the person to deal with the world's real problems and makes them think clearly so they don't say ignorant things about other religions. You talk of "fantasy;" I could say the same thing about your Jesus who was tempted in the desert. He was just probably hallucinating because he fasted for 40 days and was hungry and thirsty. By the way, spell "Buddhism" right next time.
@uranian99 well it did not solve my problems so I turned to the techings of Jesus and they helped me. And I have one of the worse mental health conditions known. So take it from me, take it from experience it did not help me one bit. Jesus expalined perfectly why I suffer and he did not try to cure me of it but explained its part of self emptying. Buddism just failed and I tried it alot.
@Afewdollarsmore1 If it doesn't work for you, then it's your decision to try something else. Don't put up something negative for others to read. There are plenty of people who are happy following the Dharma. His Holiness the Dali Lama was just explaining what meditation is. You're the one who turned it into something negative. You also seem to be one of those Christians who uses these boards to proselytize. Your comments are not welcome and have nothing to do with the subject.
@uranian99 Is not this video doing the very same thing, who do you think you are denying Jesus as the living God and putting this demonic religion up? There is only one true God ok. Ye should not make an idol for yourself ok!! Do you understand me, you make buddah for an idol and deny the one true God. You want to test my spiritual power do you? Foolish man telling me I am negative when this whole religion is demonic? I am here to lead people to the truth not this demonic worship.
@Afewdollarsmore1 How dare you call him holy? do you understand what holy is? do you see this man perform miracles? This man is as holy as the glasses he uses because he cannot make even his own sight. He is blinded for sure and you are too. Raca! In the name of the one true living God Jesus christ I command the demon to come out of you! And out of his so called Holiness tyrant misleader and deciever!
I think you just proved my point. His Holiness the Dalai Lama never said or has said anything against Christianity. We Buddhists don't make "idols" for ourselves. Nothing in the Dharma is worshipped. We simply teach and explain to those who wish to hear. His Holiness is a trained teacher, period. If you're going to follow Jesus' teachings, go ahead. But don't try to get around them with your Old Testament role-playing. It is so transparently childish.
@uranian99 Well of course he is not going to say a thing against christianity because then people would know it was a demonic teaching. It is sly and tries to get followers by saying its a mind science so you tell me what is holy about a scientist? I told you you do not know what holy means. I have a sincere question to the Dalai Lama. How can we fell compassion with hte world, without crying all the time. It is terrible what people all over the world are going trough, and when children is somehow involved I somehow can not be brave anymore, and just feel hopelessness....
@Aviajamin: Maybe reflecting on this quote can give you some insight into answering your question: "God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference." (Reinhold Niebuhr)
@Buddha7575 Thank you very much for your comment :-) Yes, I must practise acceptence, that is true....and still keep a contructive approach to the things I can change...
@Buddha7575 you said, "God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference." (Reinhold Niebuhr)" I see no evidence for any god, BUT I see much evidence for a man made god.
@Buddha7575 this quote never did anything for me ... knowing what we know threw Science( Quantum Physics ) ... i now see now why ... the packed rehabs across the nation speak for them selves ... this is one quote ready for the shelf :) You Are Powerless Over Nothing ! peace be with you :)
@NoitesLisboa i want to understand what Buddha7575 wrote, can you please write what he wrote in a very very simple that even a 10year old child could understand? =p
@YoungMaqler Its a little bit difficult to explain you that in a easier way. Hes asking God for three things. 1st, he asks for serenity to accept what he can not change. Example: what Aviajamin said. 2nd, he asks for courage to change what he can. And third, he asks for wisdom(knowledge)so that he know the difference between the 1st and the 2nd request.
Aviajamin, needs serenity to accept things that he can't change, because he can't change the the wickedness of the world. Did you understand?
@NoitesLisboa Thank you very much! understood very well since you explained, maybe this will make others who dont understand fully like me before you explained, understand better =p
The quote that the channel host left you is one of my favorite quotes.
You feel hopelessness because of your perception. From an eternal perspective, everything is Teacher. Out of suffering comes wisdom. The wise are thankful for everything and see value in everything. Look within yourself, and you will begin to see life from this perspective.
@Tao33316 thank you aswell for your response :-) I know that there is a long way before I can feel thankful for suffering - because I cannot accept it - it makes me angry and frustrated and challenge my faith in God - this is the logic of my heart. But my inner logic know that you somehow are right. I guess I must first practice acceptence before I can begin to practice thankfulness...I have a long road before me :-)
The road ahead is only as long as you make it. The road ahead leads within you. You are already there. You must simply awaken. This is the purpose of suffering. The one who is awake sees the Divine in every experience. The eternal Teacher is everywhere.
Dear friend , understanding how the world works and the laws that rule it , helps to accept the shitty destiny of some people and cope with catastrophys of all sorts. Karma is the answer in the Buddhist view.
@Aviajamin you must be nuts to hear a fellow like this, he keeps becoming American and British by the day and his opinion on every thing that's happening in the world as if he is a the know all and end all of every thing in life get a life lama,.. you are just a man like all others ,... get a life man
@Aviajamin Don't carry the weight of the world on your shoulders. Focus on what good you can do at any particular moment. One act of compassion and kindness to a random stranger you pass in the street can be as simple as a greeting. Say hello to people and you instantly make them feel good even if they don't say anything back. We can change things for the better but no one can look at the entire world and take on all its negative energy. Live a happy life and you contribute positively to others.
@Aviajamin To feel compassion is noble, but, one must balance one's compassion with wisdom. Compassion without wisdom (and vice versa) is like a bird with only one wing, it can't fly. To practice compassion without wisdom, to the point of feeling overwhelmed like you are describing, the Tibetans call "idiot compassion". And, rememeber what H.H. the Dalai Lama said: "Hope, is the basis of hope".
@Aviajamin The World is not "Material" it is based on a swing. The closer the scientist go, or the further they look. I think, that with meditation, you get into the "Swinging of the world", wich is not measerable because it is immaterial. But you can give it a positive swing, too.
I only have the problem, that my mind runs around like crazy and produces f.e. comments like yours...
@Aviajamin find Light* in your Heart* ... Look to Your Own Beating Heart .. see the Incredible Wonder in this ... and that all is possibly ... we are the one who create's limit ... and then we break them :)

There are many aspect and levels of meditation but the most basic and most fundamental one is to focus on the most important task of our live which is simply breathing. This natural technique of breathing requires no faith or religion :) Because breathing is the source and a process that is needed for the continuation of our lives we focus on this involuntary task. Through breath we take involuntary task and make it voluntary, what happens during the simple task is different for each person
Please visit my channel for the unpopular truth about homosexuality.
A person does not need hatred or any kind of phobia in order to acknowledge important differences between heterosexual attraction / behavior / marriage / adoption and homosexual attraction / behavior / marriage / adoption. Even non-religious people know this.
Homosexual activists, with support from the media, have succeeded at framing themselves as noble victims; it's an effective way to push a social agenda.
@lunchEATSyou His religion is Buddhism. Religion in latin means to bind. In Buddhism there is no "God" in a sense, but there is a belief system. Culture, spirituality, morality, norms, world views, etc.. are tied, or bound to Buddhism. I do not consider it solely as philosophical view.

@fntime: If you can sit and breath and concentrate fully on your breathing, just normal breathing, this is one type of meditation. One can do this, until one does no longer need to do this, i.e. "it" breathes, the "you" is gone. Only "breath" is left.
@fntime If you try to get this kind of advice from youtube there are alot of people who will tell you all kinds of things. For something important, you need to find a real teacher who can teach you individually. Listening to random comments you will get the input of a million people who all think they know something, and they might all be total idiots. Don't be discouraged, think about it for yourself and come up with a way to find someone qualified to teach you.
@fntime don't worry about your thoughts. the trick to not be affected by them. all thoughts are just thoughts. they come and go, and you don't have to label them or suppress them. i think it was trungpa rinpoche who said, "in meditation you can experience a sense of existence, or being, that includes your thoughts but is not conditioned by your thoughts or limited by your thinking process"
@fntime Paying attention on the breathing would be the basic of meditation. You can do the mantras with the intakes and get rid of the bad things of your soul with the outtakes.
And I agree with Buddha7575 paying high attention "just" on the breathing is a meditation itself.
@fntime "I attempt to stop thought, leaving thoughtless awareness."
That's perfect. That's exactly what meditation ought to be - the absence of ego-based thought; simply have awareness, pure consciousness and nothing else.
@DeadJesus100 Lots of ways. One very simple way is to turn off the lights and light a candle. Stare at the flame and try to "see" its aura. Observe the way that the light emanates from it, and focus all of your attention on that flame and only that flame. After a few minutes, close your eyes and picture that flame.
Or you can simply lay down and focus on your breath. Count your breaths up to 100 or 150, you'll be pretty relaxed then.
@DeadJesus100 "That's exactly what meditation ought to be - the absence of ego-based thought; simply have awareness, pure consciousness and nothing else."
@fntime I think sometimes the best thing about meditation is learning to disassociate yourself from your problems. I didn't think it was possible until I learned. At the start of each meditation try putting every stress, every problem, every little worry or concern into a box in your mind and then close it. For that time, while you are meditating you are completely free from all those things. It releases you and teaches you how much our problems are in our own minds and of our choosing.
@fntime no, it just serves as a distraction from whatever is bothering you, when you are focused on something neutral as breathing, you cant focus on what was bothering you...it does still come up, but the more you put it aside gently and focus on the breathing again, it will come up less and less untill you are free of it. Basically, you feel negative emotion because you are "observing" what you dont like. meditations causes you to "observe" something else.
@fntime Hello friend. I know your comment was 4 months ago but in answer to your question...in meditation one does not try to "stop thought" or thinking. Just OBSERVE the breath. Always bring your attention back to the breath. Thoughts are fleeting...forever rising and and fading giving rise to new ones endlessly. This is our prison. Just OBSERVE the breath. :)
@fntime meditation is not stopping thought by and large. Mindfulness of breathing is useful as the breath acts as an anchor into the present moment by moment awareness of things as they are.... from this we can broaden our awareness of mind, body, emotions etc. If you want to learn properly go and find a suitable teacher or sit a silent meditation retreat and then you will have a better idea for yourself.
@fntime The proper way to use breathing in your meditationsession is to breathe in with your belly, not your chest. You will bring up your subconcious and you'll start feel ing what you are bothered by. Ignore those feelings and views when you feel them. Don't react to them.
After multiple sessions you will have less negative feelings to process.
When you sleep you also breathe through your belly instead of your chest, but you can do it yourself while you're awake, too, to save time.
3 points on a triangle A, B, and C. Why can't B and A be switched? they can. they are arbitrarily labeled but the we must honor the labels in order to understand things like rotation of the circle. all perceived dissimilarity in things and call perceived classification and discrimination is arbitrarily imposed on the world so that we can describe and understand it. perception is the perception of dissimilarity.
The questions asked focused on the notions of compassion, harmony and happiness but his recent statement of his imminent retirement also gave rise to some questions. His Holiness thus reaffirmed his intention to step down as political leader and allow for the fulfillment of the Tibetan charter, as a way to democratize the Tibetan society further. In his meeting with local press he said: "I end the four century old tradition voluntarily, happily and proudly."
you can read and listen to as much as u want to but the only real way is to try it the breath is mostly used because it is something that is always with you
vegetarianism is not mandatory in buddhism...buddhism is about avoiding extremes and walk the middle path.you are projecting your dislikes on those who eat meat!
if you don't eat meat fine..more power to you, but that doesn't give you the right to judge others that do eat it!
you do in your life what is best for you, leave others to make up their on mind and live their life of their choosing
It's interesting to me how distinctly different the Buddhist idea of meditation is from the Jewish/Christian idea of meditation. What the Dalai Lama has described here is a method by which a person sort of escapes to pursue inner peace. In the Jewish/Christian tradition, it's a concept of deep consideration to pursue discernment (what one ought to do). I guess both are really seeking clarity, so they're not totally dissimilar, but it just struck me in a way it hadn't before, I guess~shrug~ :)
The Dalai Lama explained a simple breathing meditation which can begin to calm the mind, however the main focus of a buddhist is meditation through analytical reasonings. In the tibetan tradition there is a scholar who wrote on buddhist logic. then a buddhist will look to penertrate the nature of realtiy using sound logial ascertainment.
meditation on tibetan is 'gom' is can be used in many ways but its core meaning is familiarisation, and is not seen as mystical but an everyday experience.
So, essentially, is it then a method to escape the world around you in order to calm the mind in order to better *apply* the mind to the world around you.?.
I'm sorry that's very circular syntax, but is that an accurate description?
@yobhsiFehT i wouldn't say escape. breathing meditation can be called stablising mediation, perhaps that is a better rendering. its like a glass of water, when disturbed it cannot reflect anything, when still it can. so calming your mind is like doing this, sharpening your knife per say. so one does this in order to 'cut' something, and that something is the actual mode of existance of phenomena, principally your own mind. but of course having a calmer mind is always going to be benefical :)
My understanding is that concentrating to your breath is just one technique used to *facilitate* meditation; I don't think it is ever considered meditation in itself.
If you research well enough you find that the Jewish/Christian form of meditation actually is just like the Buddhist form. Over time the Jewish/Christian form was almost all but forgotten. When I read up on ancient Christianity and saw what it really was I was shocked. A good book to read about this is called "The Cloud of Unknowing" if you want to know a little more about this.
Is meditation of the breath more beneficial than mediation of sensation?

@Buddha7575 you said, "God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference." (Reinhold Niebuhr)" I see no evidence for any god, BUT I see much evidence for a man made god.

@NoitesLisboa i want to understand what Buddha7575 wrote, can you please write what he wrote in a very very simple that even a 10year old child could understand? =p
YoungMaqler 1 day ago
@YoungMaqler Its a little bit difficult to explain you that in a easier way. Hes asking God for three things. 1st, he asks for serenity to accept what he can not change. Example: what Aviajamin said. 2nd, he asks for courage to change what he can. And third, he asks for wisdom(knowledge)so that he know the difference between the 1st and the 2nd request.
Aviajamin, needs serenity to accept things that he can't change, because he can't change the the wickedness of the world. Did you understand?

The quote that the channel host left you is one of my favorite quotes.
You feel hopelessness because of your perception. From an eternal perspective, everything is Teacher. Out of suffering comes wisdom. The wise are thankful for everything and see value in everything. Look within yourself, and you will begin to see life from this perspective.
Tao33316 3 months ago
@Tao33316 thank you aswell for your response :-) I know that there is a long way before I can feel thankful for suffering - because I cannot accept it - it makes me angry and frustrated and challenge my faith in God - this is the logic of my heart. But my inner logic know that you somehow are right. I guess I must first practice acceptence before I can begin to practice thankfulness...I have a long road before me :-)
Aviajamin 3 months ago
@Aviajamin
The road ahead is only as long as you make it. The road ahead leads within you. You are already there. You must simply awaken. This is the purpose of suffering. The one who is awake sees the Divine in every experience. The eternal Teacher is everywhere.

@Aviajamin You are too attached to your 'feelings'.
If you feel 'hopelessness' then courage should be easy.
You don't understand yourself and you don't understand
reality. You think your 'idealogy' is true and it isn't.
Good luck, life is not easy for any of us, but if you can
breakthrough you feelings, you might find understanding.

I only have the problem, that my mind runs around like crazy and produces f.e. comments like yours...

Is it the intake of Oxygen or is the breathing used like the mantra
to 'uncouple' our mind from thought, that relieves us of
'painful' emotions?
Can anyone explain. I meditate and everyday I do about
20 minutes of deep breathing to benefit my body. BUT,
I never used breathing in my meditation.
My meditation isn't contemplative but rather negation.
I attempt to stop thought, leaving thoughtless awareness.
fntime 6 months ago
@fntime: If you can sit and breath and concentrate fully on your breathing, just normal breathing, this is one type of meditation. One can do this, until one does no longer need to do this, i.e. "it" breathes, the "you" is gone. Only "breath" is left.
Buddha7575 6 months ago
@fntime If you try to get this kind of advice from youtube there are alot of people who will tell you all kinds of things. For something important, you need to find a real teacher who can teach you individually. Listening to random comments you will get the input of a million people who all think they know something, and they might all be total idiots. Don't be discouraged, think about it for yourself and come up with a way to find someone qualified to teach you.
OctoSnuffaluffagus 5 months ago
@fntime What would happen if you accepted your thoughts as appose to stopping them?
Kohmpressor 5 months ago
@Kohmpressor I would then know, that they were voilitional, as opposed
to most thoughts that are phenomenial!
You will see when you stop thought, that thoughts are like an unattended
radio, a lot of noise, not a result of your 'command', and in most cases
meaningless.
fntime 4 months ago
@fntime don't worry about your thoughts. the trick to not be affected by them. all thoughts are just thoughts. they come and go, and you don't have to label them or suppress them. i think it was trungpa rinpoche who said, "in meditation you can experience a sense of existence, or being, that includes your thoughts but is not conditioned by your thoughts or limited by your thinking process"
solici 3 months ago
@fntime Paying attention on the breathing would be the basic of meditation. You can do the mantras with the intakes and get rid of the bad things of your soul with the outtakes.
And I agree with Buddha7575 paying high attention "just" on the breathing is a meditation itself.
Szellemkutya2 3 months ago
@fntime "I attempt to stop thought, leaving thoughtless awareness."
That's perfect. That's exactly what meditation ought to be - the absence of ego-based thought; simply have awareness, pure consciousness and nothing else.
mustbeburtreynolds 3 months ago
@mustbeburtreynolds explain to us how you stop thought?
DeadJesus100 3 months ago
@DeadJesus100 Lots of ways. One very simple way is to turn off the lights and light a candle. Stare at the flame and try to "see" its aura. Observe the way that the light emanates from it, and focus all of your attention on that flame and only that flame. After a few minutes, close your eyes and picture that flame.
Or you can simply lay down and focus on your breath. Count your breaths up to 100 or 150, you'll be pretty relaxed then.
mustbeburtreynolds 3 months ago
@mustbeburtreynolds lol what drugs are you on?
Meditation is the process of exclusion, trying to force your mind to be empty and still.
Its utter nonsense
No self knowledge in such a silly practice

@fntime I think sometimes the best thing about meditation is learning to disassociate yourself from your problems. I didn't think it was possible until I learned. At the start of each meditation try putting every stress, every problem, every little worry or concern into a box in your mind and then close it. For that time, while you are meditating you are completely free from all those things. It releases you and teaches you how much our problems are in our own minds and of our choosing.
Skandronicus 3 months ago 2
@Skandronicus: ... "how much our problems are in our own minds and of our choosing" - indeed!
Buddha7575 3 months ago 2
@Skandronicus Thank you!
My point, I'm trying to stop the chatter of my mind.
As a meditating point, I look into the abyss!
No thought!
When meditation becomes entwined into your
thoughts, your ego can deceive you!
Thanks again!!!!
fntime 2 months ago
@fntime no, it just serves as a distraction from whatever is bothering you, when you are focused on something neutral as breathing, you cant focus on what was bothering you...it does still come up, but the more you put it aside gently and focus on the breathing again, it will come up less and less untill you are free of it. Basically, you feel negative emotion because you are "observing" what you dont like. meditations causes you to "observe" something else.
Asahi100percent 2 months ago
@fntime Hello friend. I know your comment was 4 months ago but in answer to your question...in meditation one does not try to "stop thought" or thinking. Just OBSERVE the breath. Always bring your attention back to the breath. Thoughts are fleeting...forever rising and and fading giving rise to new ones endlessly. This is our prison. Just OBSERVE the breath. :)
Composer19691 1 month ago

In his meeting with local press he said: "I end the four century old tradition voluntarily, happily and proudly."

vegetarianism is not mandatory in buddhism...buddhism is about avoiding extremes and walk the middle path.you are projecting your dislikes on those who eat meat!
if you don't eat meat fine..more power to you, but that doesn't give you the right to judge others that do eat it!
you do in your life what is best for you, leave others to make up their on mind and live their life of their choosing

I guess both are really seeking clarity, so they're not totally dissimilar, but it just struck me in a way it hadn't before, I guess~shrug~ :)
yobhsiFehT 1 year ago 2
The Dalai Lama explained a simple breathing meditation which can begin to calm the mind, however the main focus of a buddhist is meditation through analytical reasonings. In the tibetan tradition there is a scholar who wrote on buddhist logic. then a buddhist will look to penertrate the nature of realtiy using sound logial ascertainment.
meditation on tibetan is 'gom' is can be used in many ways but its core meaning is familiarisation, and is not seen as mystical but an everyday experience.
dexterhawson 1 year ago
@dexterhawson
So, essentially, is it then a method to escape the world around you in order to calm the mind in order to better *apply* the mind to the world around you.?.
I'm sorry that's very circular syntax, but is that an accurate description?
yobhsiFehT 1 year ago
@yobhsiFehT i wouldn't say escape. breathing meditation can be called stablising mediation, perhaps that is a better rendering. its like a glass of water, when disturbed it cannot reflect anything, when still it can. so calming your mind is like doing this, sharpening your knife per say. so one does this in order to 'cut' something, and that something is the actual mode of existance of phenomena, principally your own mind. but of course having a calmer mind is always going to be benefical :)
dexterhawson 1 year ago
@yobhsiFehT How is concentrating on your breath a form of escaping?
pesquer2211 1 year ago
@pesquer2211
My understanding is that concentrating to your breath is just one technique used to *facilitate* meditation; I don't think it is ever considered meditation in itself.
yobhsiFehT 1 year ago
@yobhsiFehT
