Adorable child! They are so naturally inquisitive. Regarding your antenna, what kind of coaxial cable are you using? Reason I ask is that there is usually huge signal losses on most cables that carry a WiFi signal, because WiFi signal frequencies are in the GHz (gigahertz) range. One has to buy special, low loss cabling designed for minimal loss and signal attenuation at these insanely high frequencies! I honestly don't see how your setup can thus work, unless you have the special cable!
@AudiophileTubes Well... comcast uses coax to go from their converter boxes to the modem, and i have used upwards of 20 feet without a problem (low end cheapo cable), in the 50 foot range, using high quality copper/gold cable which is still not very expensive, can reduce the impedance by a lot I'm sure.
@djbudjay Yep, but the direction the antenna is pointed you get the best transmission distance. I tried it on mine on a small fm transmitter and got about 1-2km range on the highest gain end of the antenna.
@gell7 ... nobody cares, all kids are like that, and yes it get's annoying. Not to mention... she can see, lol frankly, the antenna is over 20 feet in the air... I'm also quite sure he opened the video by asking his daughter to say hi to the camera or something along those lines.
For the people that want free over the air HD tv (also known as OTA HDTV), you first need to have a newer TV or set top digital box with a built in "ATSC" digital tuner (not analog NTSC). Without that digital tuner you will NOT be able to get these free digital/HD channels. Also, if you are more than 75 miles from the tv station's transmitter, it's unlikely you'll get these digital channels. If you are within 30 miles of a big city, you can probably expect to get 15 - 25 channels.
@cfellow you do know you can get a Channel Master 4221 clone antenna for around $20, and a clone of their 4228 (the same 8 bow tie design as the one you made of wood) for around $50. ;)
Go to factorydirect.ca and do a search for "antenna" to see them.
And these metal antennas will hold up to harsh winter condition much better than your home made wood one. But I give you props for trying to save some $'s.
That's not bad - I'm 45 from most, almost 100 from Nashville. I have a similar factory made Terrestrial Digital antenna up 20 ft with an inside amp - get most except Nashville - early sunday morning Nashville comes in clear. When I had the old 15 ft long directional with rotor on analog I could get Nashville most of the day, now whether directional or all directional it's hit and miss. Thanks FCC for putting us backwards.
Everything else I had already. It has been up for a year now and still working. We are in a valley so I took some advice I read online somewhere to make it bigger and put it higher if you do not get reception.
wow man yes it can get hit by lighting but i have 4 ham radio antennas up 30+ feet in wear I live we get lighting storms atleast like 6 a week in am not getting hit by it knock on wood
I put up one of the old "Bowtie"UHF antennas on the mroof. connecteed it to a cable which I ran to my Cable signal booster box and now feed two tv's off of that simple antenna and pull in 8 channels.
It's still standing after a 149" snowfall winter. It is up there in the wind but I don't think it has much surface area to catch the wind. If it does come down, it did not cost much to build, most of it was stuff I had already.
what a little angel

I like this video for a number of reasons.
-First that he built the antenna
-Second he was able to build the antenna with his daughter around (I have been there).
-I think while he was filiming it he was keeping his eye on his daughter; because there was a lot of footage of the pole and roof of the house.
Overall a thumbs up for getting the job done

@CatHollow1 At only 10 miles, I'd say a little piece of wire would be enough antenna.

Isn't it a little bit dangerous to put a metal pole on top of your home? I mean it seems like it might attract a lightning to home?

Well if by chance lightning happened to strike I would rather it hit the pole instead of the house.
