OMG...Ms Kimmaytybe...KUDOS to you...your are the master of natural hair. I have been performing protective syles on my hair and my 11 year old daughter, along with all your techniques for shampooing, conditioning, and how to properly detangle your hair. With all that I have learned and still learning from you, my hair within 2 wks has grown 2 inches already. Before my hair would come to the very top of my collar bone, now it's way past it. I couldn't belive it. Thank you !!
the most important thing that matters with hair is the rinse during conditioning. I have been washing with baking soda and water mixture and growing my hair for a year... it matters not. These rules are so funny. I know people with long hair that still use petroleum and mineral oil. It's really a combination of things that one would have to do in order to have unhealthy hair, its not one thing.
lol i forgot i was here to learn about hair, for real i was busy concentrating then i remembered and started laughing... thnx kim, u are a very good teacher.
I have started using your PH balance strips, my question is about my ends. My ends appear to be puff on the end hen grouped together with other strands of hair. Each individual stran is wavey and appear healthy. Per your other vido about hair stands. The puffyness appears more when i do my two strain twist after i have detangled. What suggestions could you offer for this problem? Thanks for your assitance and time
I'm not trying to go back &forth, truly. My initial comment was just one that I found intriguing influenced too by outside reasons that I'm sure no one on here cares about lol. However, I do agree with your statement that what is left out is what matters(especially with a following like yours). So for everyone that read my comment, I in know way believe or applaud the belief, that hair is a live organism that can develop cancer, so please do not read into it/write questions pertaining to it! :)
Its crazy that your hair needs more of acidic water or products, considering that your body needs alkaline water because acidic products causes your body to be a breeding ground for cancers.
@nerd637 in reality concerning alkalinity substances like apple cider actually make the body more ALKALINE. So is the case with lemon.... look it up... they are unique in their properties...
Honestly, absolutely LOVE you Kimmay. One question though. How is the hairs ph able to be measured. If it has to be in liquid form to be tested, wouldn't the ph of what is used to melt the hair disrupt the results from the test? I don't know if there was an answer to this in the book or not, but since you read it could you enlighten me?
kimmaytube sounds like a science teacher. i did not like science but would have recieved "A" s if she was my teacher! this beautiful young lady has me thinking about going natural myself when in fact, i was against it. now i am wondering how my natural hair looks and thats a shame, to not remember what my hair looks like without chemicals. she is very intellegent, strong and beautiful.
OMG!!!!! YOU ARE AMAZING!!! i <3 you!!!!! Just found your channel and i'm so happy!! I love the way you break things down and explain them. Since the ratings is disabled, I'm gonna say thumbs up for the part when she mixed apple cider vinegar with baking soda cause it looked like pepsi!! lol
I am so grateful that you are presenting this information. It has encouraged me to do some research on my own. I love your channel and I'm so glad I found you, you are a tremendous inspiration! God Bless.

I am looking forward to your future "kimmay Conditioner" Also thanks for the little note, nice personal touch. Keep doing your thing, the world is a better more educated place because of you!!!!!
Using baking soda on ones hair is just like relaxing it. Whether its sodium bicarbonate, sodium hydroxide, or guanidine hydroxide and ammonium thioglycolate all of these alkaline substances lift the cuticles, break certain bonds to soften the curl pattern. Maybe Arm & Hammer is a sacred cow, I don't know, but its not natural.
Excellent presentation Kimmaytube. It answered so many questions I had. When you got to Dr. Bronner castile soap I was horrified. I have been washing my natural 4b hair with one lather of a 1 to 1 dilution of DB and water! I followed with on lather of Creme of Nature moisturinzing shampoo. I'm thinking of diluting the DB further with low pH Infusium 23 for a penetrating protein treatment, since the cuticle will be open. What do you think? (or others). Thanks for this--good job!
Just to clarify, the purpose of my last comment was to say that since watching your videos I will NOT be using alkaline water in my hair. I will continue using it internally, not externally.
Very informative! I consume gallons of alkaline water a week because it's GREAT for the body (cell absorption, neutralizes acidic foods, etc) so I assumed it would also be great to use on my hair. I was planning on creating a leave-in concoction using alkaline water. I'm glad that I ran across your videos.
I'm going to begin testing the pH of my hair products. I now have a reason to dust off an old box of pH strips.
I have been researching this for quite some time now. I have viewed many videos on youtube that are incorrect (eHow/correct information). It is refreshing to find someone who did their homework before making a tutorial. Thank you for clear correct information.
When you said that you keep your hands out of your hair, does that mean you don't apply any product to it (such as leave-in conditioner or style products)? If so it makes sence why people with dreads or braids tend to have health hair.
Why were the ratings disabled - aren't you always encouraging people to rate? Were there too many thumbs down? I liked the video, but I'm just wondering...I tried to "like" it and it said the ratings were disabled.
lol. You're late to the party. Ratings are only open within the first few days of a videos launch. I keep them open long enough to get honors and then after that they're disabled.
Youtube's rating system is useless after the first few days. So I lock in my high ratings and then it is shut down. And no, considering that I made it all the way to #2 on the top rated list it was a pretty good day. :o)
I always wonder why when I put that stuff on my hair it would feel like my head was on fire. I am soooo happy that you share this information. Now I know better. Thanks!!!
when you talked about ACV I was a bit thrown off bc I have been using it to wash my hair for over a year, and it's done me well... considering my routine of not using products ( i do so bc it works best for me) maintaining a healthy diet. after i watched this video i questioned my ACV. when I checked it out, I saw that its distilled to 5% acidity and felt relieved. was your ACV distilled to less than 5%?
Your presentation reminds me of my 7th grade science teacher's classes... and I remember EVERYTHING I learned in 7th grade science (yes, we did organic chemistry in the 7th grade). She was an excellent teacher.
I would love to see the Bentonite Clay tested...although it is meant for the skin (as a detox), a lot of naturals use it as a clarifying hair mask. If you ever get around to it, maybe you can test it out in one of your upcoming vids. As always, thanks for the info!
I would have never thought in a million years to use baking soda on my hair. Prior to me even watching this I just would have thought it would be too harsh. I tried ACV and I didn't care for it as a rinse. Maybe I did it wrong or something but it made my hair kinda hard. I can't wait to see part 3!
I love where you are going with all the new videos you have up! I really appreciate the scientific side of natural hair care! It is soooo informative! I watch these videos with my 9yr old sister and they help soooooo much! You know kids they have a million questions and your videos help answer the questions she has that i dont know how to answer! LMAO THANK YOU SOOOOO MUCH!
i just knew that the baking soda would be alkaline. Ever since I attempted to join the baking soda conditioner band wagon, and upon mixing two teaspoon scoops of baking soda with elasta qp dpr, i alarmingly discovered that it gave off the relaxer smell, I immediately abandoned the entire idea. Relaxers are also alkaline, and although, baking soda isn't quite as basic, it still turned me off the entire thing. Thank you Kimmay for the explanation.
@didi425 Hi Didi, this is actually what damaged my hair back in October. I used Baking Soda to wash my small twists. My hair is colored and it's pH is on the alkaline side, so Baking soda just makes it worse.
Nice video Kimmay! You did a great job in explaining pH! I am a chemist so I understand the idea of pH and how it is applied in chemical manufacturing; however I never really researched the effects of pH on human hair. I learned something new today! As always, thanks for sharing!
I'm confused... so are you suggesting that i should try to use products that are in a 4-5.5 range...would those be the most "gentle" on hair?[sorry if i posted more than once...new youtube is confusing]
If only I had paid attention in science class years ago... I stumbled on this vid and I am glad I did very informative I don't know anything about ph in the hair before now. Thanks for sharing the knowlage!
just want to ask you a question about dry scalp and does ph blance effect it. As well as what can stop a person having a dry/flaky scalp? Reason why i am asking this is because ever since i went natural i been having a very bad case of the dry scalp and flaks and don't know how to stop it.
You are extremely intelligent thank so much for sharing your knowledge. I also go the book by Paula very interesting thank you again for generously giving your knowledge:)
very informative vid. gives us stuff to think about. i have one comment. many people are quirky about natural products vs non natural, heat vs no heat. i look at it like this. healthy hair comes from a healthy regimen both inside and out, and consistency. look at oprah, she probably washes and flat irons her hair everyday, yet it is healthy, think and long. she is no exception....just consistent
Kimmay i really do admire your vidoes alot....thanks for the time and effort you use to gather these information.....it really shows that you have a thirst for knowledge, which is the one thing i admire so greatly about u, ur inspirational....btw what additional books can u recommend alongside with the 2 u talked about in ur hair journey video...thanks....xoxoxo
great explanation, I love it. I was just wondering which 3 of these to use when I need a clarifying treatment. Thank you so much for sharing this with us.
wow, this is so interesting. It's funny, cuz I have 2 boxes of baking soda sitting here. I planned to use them on my hair like weeks ago but never got around to it. I will def. question everything before I decide to put it in my hair! Thanks Kimmay! I also used he Giovanni again but this time added EVOO, Coconut Oil, and Honey, hair came out VERY soft. I still have Trader Joes left and i kno it has parabens.
So, I don't know if you'd have an answer to this one, but I've been using Organix Coconut Milk conditioner as a leave in. Will prolonged use of that cause damage to my hair or a change in its texture?
Vinegar and Baking Soda you shown neutralizes into H2O (water), water is kind to our hair. But that combination of Vinegar and B. Soda it will eat away our hair, I would think, let me know your take. Peace+Love
It just seemed natural to me to mix the ACV and baking soda in small quantities diluted with distilled water to make an approprite rinse. All though theses substances are natural they can still be harsh.

Yup. I occasionally use an ACV rinse on my hair. But I test it with pH strips and only use it at 4.0, which is a very little amount. ACV is extremely potent, I've found.
Judging by the common recipes I see, most people are probably using too much.
@queenofsheba1000 I'm obviously not kimmaytube, but I didn't know what "avc" was either so I typed "avc rinse" into google & found out it's apple cider vinegar rinse. In taking care of natural hair I have come across many abbreviations with which I am not familiar. So I google them! :) In general, if you are on the internet and see something you don't understand, simply type it into google & it usually suggests it before you finish typing. If it's a definition I use encarta.com. Hope this helps!
I'm interested to see what insights you have on the use of baking soda. I've used it twice to cleanse my scalp. I like the results on my scalp, but not my hair :-(
Thanks a lot for this video, Kim. I'm so thankful for your research and sharing. I really wanted to understand a lot of this and was very skeptical of the AVC and Baking soda. I tried them a couple times and it didn't amaze me.

Kimmay I just want to say thank you, thank you, thank you for giving us natural the tools to make more informed decisions as to what to put in our hair. You've given me a totally different perspective and I honestly never thought of the chemical reaction that natural products such as baking soda had on my hair.
I had to come back and rate this for a fourth time :-). I love the presentation of information and your willingness to go against the grain! But what I love the most is the fact that you present the information and allow your viewers to make their own decisions. No preaching or selling here, and i appreciate that.
This is good information. I've only done the baking soda/ACV rinse once. I didn't really see any benefit from it...and I was so scared I didn't dilute it enough...probably best if I leave it alone...especially after seeing this video.
my goodness........you have a wonderful gift and talent... Your videos are so amazing and informative! I even show them to my friends who aren't natural and they are wowed by your videos...Thank you so much for sharing with us!
Kimmay - I love the way you broke down ph balance in lay-woman speak, thanks. Before seeing this, i was skeptical about the ph balance of products but you've opened my eyes.
I can't wait for your next video, i think you are going to put some common products we use as natural on front street, LOL! Please keep up the great work.
great video! i seen in this guys video that african american hair has a ph of about 5.5 like you said but other races have a ph of 7.2... is that true?
I don't know where that guy is getting that information but he is incorrect! The 4.5 -5.5 ph range is the standard for everyone's hair. Human sebum is naturally more acidic. This is based on many books, articles and cosmetology textbooks that I have read over the past 8 months.
Kim - I have to say this before I burst. Thank you so much for all the info and research you have done and brought to YouTube. You are setting the standard for black hair care. Thank you for helping me to take care of my hair. I had almost given up hope for my hair, until I saw your videos. My hair is now thriving and growing. Please know that there are those of us out here who love what you do and can hardly wait to see what's next. Stay well and be blessed.
This makes sooooo much sense!! I know that using baking soda is a regimen that some naturals use, but I never caught on to the trend. My grandma uses baking soda for EVERYTHING, so I figured it would be too harsh to use on hair.
Guess you proved my suspicion right! :)
PS...an extra thumbs up for explanation on silicones.
Love the information your sharing. I am a newly natural mom. Just over 6 months and I have tried the baking soda process and my hair shedded afterwards. thanks again for the info.
I just want to say that you are great at what you do. You explain things so eloquently. I am serious I sucked at this stuff in school, and in this one video I think I finally understand the concept of alkaline/acid lol. I just want to encourage you to continue with what you are doing, because it is a necessity in the natural hair community that is lacking, and even for the relaxed heads also. Please keep up the good work.
Thank you so much Kimmaytube for your informative videos. I'm learning and have learned so much from you and my own research. My 9 yr old daughter is now natural (did the big chop 2 months ago). We enjoy your videos together. We are so inspired thanks to you. I hope you really understand the postive effect you are having on so many.Thanks so much! XOXO
I'm interested in your next video, I currently use baking soda in my regimen to clear my scalp of build up, because have severe dandruff. I thought this was an alternative to the harsh chemicals in dandruff treatment products, but the lady I buy my natural hair care products from says that baking soda can change the texture" of the hair.
Baking soda *could* also be the source of your dandruff. Or aggravating and making it worse. High pH lifts skin on the scalp as the cuticles on the hair. Check out Lisa Akbari, she is very knowledgable about scalp disorders/issues. As a matter of fact it was her book that first made me question using baking soda on the head/hair.
Yes, it can possibly change the texture of your hair. Some mild relaxers are within the same pH range.
@kimmaytube thanks kimmay! your videos has caused me to do more research and from what I am reading since the ph of baking soda is more 200 times that of the hair it can cause a change in hair texture over time! Wow! Keep up the good work!

Kimmay, I'm going to have to try this on sea salt. I know of some naturals that add this when they cowash and they say their hair is sooo soft afterward. I've also been told there are sea salt spritz out there. Thanks for the great vid as usual!!

Why were the ratings disabled - aren't you always encouraging people to rate? Were there too many thumbs down? I liked the video, but I'm just wondering...I tried to "like" it and it said the ratings were disabled.
simplydebra 1 year ago 37
@simplydebra

when you talked about ACV I was a bit thrown off bc I have been using it to wash my hair for over a year, and it's done me well... considering my routine of not using products ( i do so bc it works best for me) maintaining a healthy diet. after i watched this video i questioned my ACV. when I checked it out, I saw that its distilled to 5% acidity and felt relieved. was your ACV distilled to less than 5%?

I would love to see the Bentonite Clay tested...although it is meant for the skin (as a detox), a lot of naturals use it as a clarifying hair mask. If you ever get around to it, maybe you can test it out in one of your upcoming vids. As always, thanks for the info!

I would have never thought in a million years to use baking soda on my hair. Prior to me even watching this I just would have thought it would be too harsh. I tried ACV and I didn't care for it as a rinse. Maybe I did it wrong or something but it made my hair kinda hard. I can't wait to see part 3!

i just knew that the baking soda would be alkaline. Thank you Kimmay for the explanation.
didi425 1 year ago 34
@didi425 Hi Didi, this is actually what damaged my hair back in October. I used Baking Soda to wash my small twists. My hair is colored and it's pH is on the alkaline side, so Baking soda just makes it worse.

just want to ask you a question about dry scalp and does ph blance effect it. As well as what can stop a person having a dry/flaky scalp? Reason why i am asking this is because ever since i went natural i been having a very bad case of the dry scalp and flaks and don't know how to stop it.

very informative vid. gives us stuff to think about. i have one comment. many people are quirky about natural products vs non natural, heat vs no heat. i look at it like this. healthy hair comes from a healthy regimen both inside and out, and consistency. look at oprah, she probably washes and flat irons her hair everyday, yet it is healthy, think and long. she is no exception....just consistent

kimmay, As of now are you still using the ACV rinse on your hair?.
SephraBoo 1 year ago
@SephraBoo
Yup. I occasionally use an ACV rinse on my hair. But I test it with pH strips and only use it at 4.0, which is a very little amount. ACV is extremely potent, I've found.
Judging by the common recipes I see, most people are probably using too much.
kimmaytube 1 year ago 5
@kimmaytube
Hi Kimmay, I love your videos by the way, they are so well put together and informative. Can speak on how you go about lowering the PH level of ACV?
I clarify my hair and scalp once per month only with ACV. I use 1/4cup ACV to 1 cup water? Do you think that is too much?
ElPressie 1 year ago
@kimmaytube ---- whats avc?
queenofsheba1000 1 year ago
@queenofsheba1000 I'm obviously not kimmaytube, but I didn't know what "avc" was either so I typed "avc rinse" into google & found out it's apple cider vinegar rinse. In taking care of natural hair I have come across many abbreviations with which I am not familiar. So I google them! :) In general, if you are on the internet and see something you don't understand, simply type it into google & it usually suggests it before you finish typing. If it's a definition I use encarta.com. Hope this helps!

great video! i seen in this guys video that african american hair has a ph of about 5.5 like you said but other races have a ph of 7.2... is that true?
msniekababy 1 year ago
@msniekababy
I don't know where that guy is getting that information but he is incorrect! The 4.5 -5.5 ph range is the standard for everyone's hair. Human sebum is naturally more acidic. This is based on many books, articles and cosmetology textbooks that I have read over the past 8 months.

This makes sooooo much sense!! I know that using baking soda is a regimen that some naturals use, but I never caught on to the trend. My grandma uses baking soda for EVERYTHING, so I figured it would be too harsh to use on hair.
Guess you proved my suspicion right! :)

I'm interested in your next video, I currently use baking soda in my regimen to clear my scalp of build up, because have severe dandruff. I thought this was an alternative to the harsh chemicals in dandruff treatment products, but the lady I buy my natural hair care products from says that baking soda can change the texture" of the hair.
zionseyes 1 year ago 2
@zionseyes
