I've been looking for a tutorial on how to install VMware player with Linux as the host OS. Everyone seems to be using Windows with Linux as the virtual OS. I have Ubuntu 11.04 on another drive but I can't install the fucking thing cause of the complexity of the command line shit. I'm really frustrated... and I want to do this because I was told that everything runs faster on Linux, blah blah, but I've yet to see it cause I can't get it to work!!!! Any ideas???
Hey, how did you manage to transfer a file from the host OS to the guest just by dragging it??? i use Vbox and i didn´t even imagined this was possible!
do u have to have the os some where or does it come with the program? i mean like if i want to run xp on my vista machine? can i do that without paying for xp?
Burn the ISO, restart your computer, and install Ubuntu. From there I'm sure you can find guides on Ubuntu forums for how to install either VMWare or VirtualBox.
Keep in mind though, unless you have a high end computer, you'd be better off running most programs natively or through WINE rather than through a virtual machine.
Compiz Fusion is enabled by default and will bring 3D desktop visual effects that improve the usability and visual appeal of the system. Ubuntu 7.10 automatically detects whether the hardware is capable of running compiz; if not, it falls back to normal desktop. Additional effects can be enabled in "System/Preferences/Appearance" under the "Visual Effects" tab. There you can also disable the effects entirely. "
Whoa- I didn't know you could run multiple instances of VMware Player. I setup my xubuntu box w/ VMware Server (also free) so I could run multiple OSes / appliances @ one time. Still a n00b, I guess. What are the pros / cons of the player vs. server? I know the player won't let you create VMs, but comes w/ a smaller footprint, right??
jrstravino, how the hell did you get it to transfer files between the Host and Guest OS simply by clicking and dragging? I'm running the newest vmplayer compiled from source in Feisty with Compiz Fusion. Currently, I use and SSH client with Windows to connect to the Host OS (Ubuntu) and transfer files but I'd LOVE to be able to click and drag. Any insight?

do you need a 64 bit PC to use a virtual drive or machine?
hobbs312 2 years ago
no. you only need a 64 bit computer to run a 64 bit guest os. if your guests are all 32 bit, then a 32 bit host will work fine.

You should make an ISO of the OS before you can run it in VMware, which means that you must have the CD or DVD with you.
