  • great guitarist and undoubtedly the best part of the nightly jay leno train wreck

  • I don't know sergeant doakes can plays guitar so good

  • what will happen when he's going to finger hes wife :o

  • Wait... he played what??!? KE going up through ALL of the gears, just incredible.

  • I just may be high, but I swear I heard about 10 seconds of Mahavishnu Orchestra in there. KE, you are a jazz god.

  • I had no idea that guy was that good.

  • You could practice your entire life and attain the same degree of technical proficiency as Kevin Eubanks, but still not be able to do this. The genius here isn't just in the technical execution. It's in the spontaneous creation.

  • ...and this jam must have been "Spider Monkey Cafe". The very tune that made me buy his Zen Food.

  • Kevin wow. I saw you on the Tonight show for years. I know you had to have it to get there but this pushed me over the edge. I heard you on a Pandora jazz station. I will be buying your music and if you come anywhere I can see you live I will do that too.

  • Why did they never feature a Kevin Eubanks solo spot on the Tonight Show all those years?

  • thats my dad

  • I sure miss him at Lenos show

  • Good Lord, he would fit right in with the guys from porcupine tree.

  • not long ago, i was able to correspond briefly with kevin from his tonight show web site. it has been a few years, not sure if he's still doing that

  • my eyes wept tears of joy after hearin this!! Kevin you rock!

  • check out his recording 'shadow prophets'. kevin was a great player / writer long before jay leno. he really extended wes montgomery's style, which was his starting point, hence the somewhat unorthodox right hand finger picking position, which is more like a flat picker than finger picker. his brother robin is an a-list bone player.

  • he's not that bad. but overall he's ok i gues.

  • @phattown213 prove you're better then!

  • he is the steve vai of african americans

  • I looked up the word underrated in the dictionary and right beside it was a portrait of Kevin Eubanks.

  • Looks like nut width of 50-52 mm on that guitar. Anyone know what model it is?

  • The first time I saw Kevin play solo, was on the Tonight Show. I don't even remember the year, but it must have been at least 15 or more years ago. My mouth just fell open, as note after mellifluous note began to fall upon my ears. It went far beyond any experience I'd ever had before, listening to a guitarist. Kevin's genius is that his music reaches down deep, penetrating the soul; reaching a place untouched, somewhere unexpected, visceral and pure. Thank you Kevin. Thank you.

  • Oh, man, I just discovered his sample of the studio version of this ("The Dancing Sea") at his website. Incredible production! As an opening track to the CD, this one just knocks it out of the park!!

  • I;d find it hard not to like this.

  • I had forgotten all about this gig. I love someone who has the talent to really speak through music. Thanks Kevin. Best wishes.

  • first time i ever saw/heard him, (where have I been?) its a pleasure just watching his fingers!

  • Thank Kevin for such versitillity and brilliance......

  • fantastic!

  • you played the shit out of that thing.

  • i like

  • Wow

  • Kevin Eubanks will be playing live on The Bob Rivers Show today, August 13, at 9:35 a.m. Pacific Time! Tune into KZOK 102.5 FM Seattle or stream audio and video at bobrivers[dot]com

  • incredible skills! But i can't remember any of his phrases..

  • those strings are very low tension... anyone know what they are?

  • after watching this several times i cant find a part where it isn't epic

well played Mr Eubanks good sir

  • is he using nylon strings?

  • this is one of bests!!!

  • I'm pretty sure this is based on the track "Thought About Thinking" from the Opening Night CD. I've got 5 of his 6 GRP CD's from 1984 to 1989 (a friend had the missing CD). There's some great playing in there, both by Eubanks and his band members.

  • Isnt that the song at the begging of King of Queens?

  • Technically it's pretty impressive, it just seems lost and incoherent structurally.

Don't get me wrong - the cat can play... it's just a massive bore to listen too. A little musical masturbation - kinda stuff I hear at guitar shops too frequently. Gave a thumbs up though because I respect his ability...

Anyway, fingerstyle guitar is becoming more and more an olympic sport.. and that's not a good thing...

  • @bluesgurugod An Olympic sport? From a guy whose title is bluesgurugod? Pot? Kettle? And it's improvised, how much structure did you think it was going to have?

Great blues in there, and the look on his face says it all. Just cuz you can't play it doesn't mean you should bash it.

  • @itsmac420 As an expert in blues guitar - (and all things blues) I would not say there's "some great blues in there". There's some nice licks and little tricks but it amounts to a whole lot of meandering in the end. As I said I give full credit for his ability, it's just really boring to listen to. Sorry. btw - I can play too... ;)

  • @bluesgurugod Yeah right!! This is why people will remember him and not you.

  • @itsmac420

Well put. Indeed the face says it all.

Many a 'player' would find it challenging to even break down some of the jazz progressions he's laying down, let alone execute them.

Kevin's a master, very well respected by his peers, and has more than enough in his inventory of extremely structured and well planned compositions. Is it OK for him to 'let loose' now and then? I think so...

Personally, I found this improv to contain as much heart/soul as technique.

  • he looks like Dave Chuppulle

  • @saberbazer since when, idiot?

  • wow he should play like this on the tonight show

  • @cooliovasquez last friday was kev's last night on the Tonight Show and he closed the show with a solo acoustic number like this

  • kevin was great last night i didn't even know he was good lol

  • Kevin, you will be missed.

  • @saberbazer what are you talking about? why did you even bring this up?

  • People forget that Kevin is actually a guitarist O.O

  • @saberbazer You are a fucking retard.

  • wow i never knew he was so crazy good. you don't hear him playing like this on the tonight show he is very very very vrey very very very good

  • amazing guitarist!

  • Don't Get Down on yourselves guys this man right here has been playing more years than i've been alive. so really this is an example of pure dedication to true craft in human culture. What I think the Public should know right off the bat is that Kevin Eubanks in my mind is one of the best Jazz Guitarist this decade has seen and yet is underrated. Its a shame jazz isn't as mainstream as it was once was.

  • this is so stylish, very cool!

  • @crushsatan, @RockandRollMusicMan

    LOL, guitar noobs

  • What's painful is that he doesn't even use a pick... :-o

  • Sounds like someone attempting to show off and put as many notes in as they can in a small ammount of time. Going up and down scales does not make you good . Playing with feeling makes you good. He is a more technical showoff player (a dime a dozen). He should not quit his night job. Oh wait nvm...

  • @RockAndRollMusicMan Let's see......Kevin has credentials. You have what? A banjo video in a trashed out bedroom?

  • I SUCK.

  • Bald mojo dude just kicked Esteban's floozy flamenco playing ass

  • I still like "shoot to thrill" by ac/dc better; but nice job. Very Jazzy. You should tour with Led Zeppelin.

  • @crushsatan

who the fuck are you talking too? do you even know who this is?

  • yeah the sm57 mic was a bad choice and im not diggin the set either.. eubanks is still sick though

  • Wow. Amazing performance, awesome guitar, good video quality...too bad they used and SM57 on that. They should've used like a Rode NT2A or something better.

  • ur dad should of used a rubber

  • You should've used a newer insult. How old are you?

  • @jawsrock1

oh come on it was kinda funny haha

  • He is a beast im tryna catch upp 2 his skill...

  • i just quit playing guitar after watching this

  • see? even KEVIN EUBANKS plays martin!!!

  • i really think hes got a good think goin on the jay leno show! i don't know how he could get much bigger than that.

he may not be john mayer or jimi

but i think hes made a pretty good name for himself doin what he does

    keep doing your thing man!

  • Good stuff

  • Its too bad that most of the amazing musicians can't make enough money to just sell their cd's and have to get gigs that keep others from seeing their amazing talent in full... Kevin is first class for sure

  • he really does have his bends mastered

  • jay leno sho' is lucky

  • An inspiration. Kevin is one of the players who convinced me to drop the pick. Great technique, and so MUSICAL. Fantastic.

  • Excellent work, buy one of the most talented guitar players in the USA.

  • never heard of this man, glad i found him!

  • He is the leader of the Tonight Show Band with Jay Leno. I have been a fan of his for years. He is the master of the guitar.

  • AWEOME!!! to bad he's so under rated

  • Kevin, is why I watch Jay Leno. Kevin and Smitty!

  • Kevin Eubanks is by far one of the most underrated and under-appreciated guitarists of our era. I'd like to see some of these metal-head d-bags pull this off!

  • if this was really all improvised, im speechless

if this wasnt really improvised, im speechless

  • it's one of his songs called 6/8 or six eight, but it was sick, I saw him at Jazz Alley a few months ago

  • Some of the tonalities remind me of the John McLaughlin album "My Goal's Beyond." That's a good album.

  • this is awesome. does anybody know what kind of guitar he's playing here? it appears to be a steel-string, but the neck and string spacing are wider than you'd expect. any ideas?

  • I'm pretty sure that is a Martin D-18

  • Its a martin.

  • It's a Martin but I'm not sure what model. Classical style guitars usually have the wider spacing.

  • what a BADASS

  • nice

  • Damn! I didn't think this guy was that good.

    Amazing skills.

  • Kevin Eubanks is a MONSTER!! Get "Face to Face" and "Shadow Prophets". More stuff like this on these disks. I have most of his stuff. Some of it is "out there". But there is a lot if it like this.

  • JESUS!

  • Damn, I always forget how bad ass kevin is.

  • As an FYI...this tune is now called "The Dancing Sea"...there is an excerpt clip of Kevin playing it with his band in L.A. on electric I recently posted to YouTube. Some really nice playing.

  • very tommy emmanuel... tinted with kevin eubanks

  • One of the best guitar players ever in jazz history!! Period!! He has so many records since back in the 80's and has been always active with his music! SUPERB ARTIST!

  • dang!! kevin eubanks is sick!

  • WOW! That is some good shit!!!

he should be Jays guest one night before they leave.

  • @tbroofer how did you know he was going to leave? your comment was posted over a year ago, and Kevin just announced his resignation

  • what kinda strings are those they look like electrics

  • Are you kidding me? Holy shit. Kevin Eubanks is a monster. I had no idea.

  • This is ridiculous. I can hear blues, rock, jazz, and classical, all interwoven so flawlessly. It's also the first time I think I can say ive seen someone legitimately 'shred' while fingerpicking on an acoustic. What's the tonight showing doing only having him play during the commercial breaks? They've got it backwards.

  • and this is freaking improv too.

  • holy shit

  • tabs. lol. gimme a break.

  • Comment removed

  • can you guys give me tips when it comes to scales. first the best way to learn and second how to use them for improvisation and stuff. Im going in the blues direction

  • Kevin Eubanks is just awesome.i remember as a kid .Hearing "Urban Heat" on Eic in the Evening on WGBH

Does anyone have a vid of that song ..man did that song cook.

  • Been into his stuff long before he was on the tube with the folks that stay up late.

  • anybody know where i can finds tabs for this?

  • posts like this always crack me up. It's like, dude, if I transcribed this and gave it to you, what would you do with it?

  • i'd play it you jackass..

  • If you can play like this, why do you need tablature? Do you understand music theory?

  • its alot simpler with tabs jackass. grow the fuck up and stop belittling people on the internet

  • lmao! amen! hahaha. i hate it when kids ask for tabs for songs that are clearly way out of their skill level.

  • If you're lucky enough to find these tabs is because you know Kevin in person!!

Read the video info, it says "Kevin performing an improvised acoustic jam", so I guess dude you will need to do it yourself but is quite a challenge if you get it done. Then comes the challenge of playing like this!! This performance is the result of a whole life of sudying, precticing, personal effort and gifted from God talent mainly. Good luck on your search man!! Cheers!! Loving music!!

  • I've never heard Kevin Eubanks play on his own before! He's got some nice chops.

  • chakarnis, your reference to the first half white president is pathetic. cant you just hear the music? kevin is at present my favorite guitarist, playing music that is both black and white. can you hear it?

  • f*cking right! Way underrated..

  • more than underrated I would say that he's not pretty famous as some other guys, but into the powerful jazz circle of musicians and critics worldwide there's no way that anyone take the hat off in front of him!! Kevin Eubanks is a music diamond!!

  • Absolutely, one of the most unsung heros of the guitar. He has many great releases, but you HAVE to have "Face to Face" in your collection. I think it's his best work.

  • Absolutely a masterpiece!! I bought it even double just in case a backup is needed ; )

  • fucking sick! i love how he keeps the same little melody but switches it up and keeps it non repetitive without swaying off into some other shit.

  • Spirit Talk I and II, my favourite KE albums. When I listen to them I feel Like I'm on a... Well... Spiritual Journey. But I guess that's what he had in mind. awesome musician.

  • Spirit

  • owa.. that was great!!!

  • I cannot believe all you idiots cannot stand to give this brutha' his props. M-M-M still threatened by a black man. What in the hell are you gonna do on 1/20/08? Damn, you can't even believe your own eyes. The man is playing. But you gotta turn it into something else. Maybe you should go watch a Gene Autry movie or something. Now, that's REAL geetar playin',podna!

  • Thumbs up man!

  • this brotha has got some soul!

  • God I wish I was black.

  • Yeah, that would make your life so much easier, especially in the U.S., growing up most of the times in an environment without any possibility to evolve!

Not that he's playinng like that because he dedicated his life to music and practised like a maniac, every day of his life, worked on every aspect of his musicianship, technically and intellectually, no, it's because his skin is brown.

Even when racism changes sides, it's still racism.

  • No shit douchebag. It's a fuckin joke. I know he's not good at guitar cause he's black.

Don't lecture me on what it takes to be a good musician I've done it, I know how hard it is.

  • You are right, I overreacted. I had no right to call you implicitely a racist, based on one single statement. I apologize for that. Obviously I was not witty enough so detect the irony.

We're both making music, we're both appreciating the same wonderful performance of kevin here, that should make us friends, not fiends.

Peace, good luck with your band

P.S.: I shure know what shit means, but what does douchebag mean?

  • Hey man I accept your apology. Not many people would be as curious as you were, and I am also sorry for overreacting.

I would consider douchebag as meaning retard, or something along those lines.

Good luck to you as well.

  • its good to know that ppl can still jam like this today.

  • this makes me mad. i'm gonna go hurt my teddy-bear, hard.

  • Kevin does not get enough credit for his playing. Can probably out play most guitar players. He really rocks when he wants to play some harder rock n' roll, too.

  • now that is one FAT guitar.

  • check out extensions, an album dave holland put out in 1988. kev's on that one, great melodic solo's and chord extensions are crazy

  • Does anyone know what model Martin he's playing?

  • my guess is that its a custom-made. no fret markers or pickguard. and the neck looks WAAY wider than the standard 1 11/16" at the nut.

  • what the fuck do u mean by fake? tell me you're not stupid enough to believe this is dubbed by an audio track recorded by someone else!?

just because he's on leno he can't be good?

he's on leno BECAUSE he's good! Look at Smitty!..He's amazing and he's on Leno! frankly Smitty has got my dream job!

  • i think what he means is that it is not entirely improvised as advertised. it has a theme and chord progression that he obviously did not come up with on the spot. however the extended improvised jams inbetween theme statements are really really impressive and certainly not fake.

  • so just because it's not improvised on the spot it's "fake"? do u know what a small amount of music of today that is actually on the spot-at the top of your head-improvised?! I don't wanna say none but very little! why would do this performance with absolutely nothing prepared?!

  • i didn't do say this, techboy211 did, chew him out for it, he was over at my house

  • i had no idea he was this good. i've only seen him on Leno, but damn!

  • yeah, he graduated from berklee for jazz and such... that made me realize how amazing he is, cause it takes incredible skill to get into that school

  • It doesn't take great skill to get in it. It takes money to get in. It takes great skill to stay in it and finish it.

  • haha... this is true.

  • This is awesome. I've never heard anything from Kev that wasn't on the tonight show.

  • This is fantastic.

Is he using steel or nylon strings?

  • wow...

  • Steel.

  • Awesome. Kevin Eubanks has that rare gift of animating even the most complex passages with a very strong sense of the blues. Few jazz guitarists play with such deep soul and emotional conviction.

  • Awesome. Kevin Eubanks has that rare gift of animating even the most complex passages with a very strong sense of the blues. Few jazz guitarists play with such deep soul and emotional conviction.

  • If thats improvised holy ****, il take my hat off to you. Howcome you dont play with nails?? The trebles are rather quiet but otherwise amazing.

  • nobody's nails would stand this kind of playing

  • This is great technique but where's the soul.... it feels cold to me. I much prefer

the Jimmy Page Bron Yr Stomp where the technique and the soul are all there..... this is too much like Yngwie plays jazz guitar..... takes me nowhere emotionally

  • Honestly, Page's solos weren't even all that 'emotional'. listen to some of the other stuff that Eubanks did and you'll see why he's so great =)

  • To be honest I guess I'm biased because he has always pissed me off on Leno. The music he plays on Leno is always the same twiddling crap.... it's like "what the hell was that..." whereas on Letterman when they come back from the break and you hear that they're finishing off "Pride- In the name of Love" you feel like saying Hang on... let me here more!

  • There's very few jazz guitarists I like.... this type of playing seems too studied.... as if it's a final year thesis in some How To Play Jazz university.
