  • My first car was a 79 Cougar. That thing was palatial! Fake wood dash, red velour upholstery and a 133hp 302. It doesn't sound like much now but in her day she was opulence on wheels. Now Ford is killing the Mercury brand. They've been built since 1939. It's sad to see them go.

  • I used to own an 80 Mercury Capri RS 5.0. It was the car I learned to drive a stick shift on. Talk about fun. :)

This ad is COOL. Back when Mercury had mostly RWD cars... except the gayass FWD Lynx and LN7.

  • I miss those 70's-80's Mercury "sign of the cat" commercials. Nowadays, car companies commercials are lame and unmemorable.

  • When I was little I used to think real cougars sat atop the L-M dealer's sign. Turns out I was wrong. Those signs were too thin to hang out on. What they did in the commercials was to take one of those signs, cut down the tall post attachment, build a set of steps and have the cougar climb to the top and keep on filming until they got a growl out of the pussycat.

Now, not only is the Cougar gone, but so's the entire Mercury brand.

  • @Mcnzlea Later ads had the couger meowing. lol

  • Oh my, my beloved Town Car! 1 of the most awesome regal cars ever.

  • Didn't the early fox body full size Ford's have transmission problems? I seem to remember hearing something about that

  • Cat stayed up on the sign until they sold 100 cars

  • @nomadcowatbk Thats funny!!!

  • They used to give away free a bobcat with every purchase, but they kept peeing on the plush leather interior.

  • RIDE WITH THE MUTHA FUCKIN CAT

  • where's the sexy Zephyr Z-7 !!!

  • Whenever I hear ride with the cat I think of Taladega nights LOL

  • RIP Mercury 1939-2010

  • i have a 77 cougar wagon. people always ask me questions about it.

there is 9 of these cars know to exist today, but i'm sure there is still a few out there

  • @dnl5649 ford only made the wagon for 1977. only a few LTDII and cougar wagons left!

  • Good commercial, you definitely don't see many of the early Fox body full size cars around that's for sure

  • The 69-70 Mercury Marauder X-100 was my favorite... the very definition of "cool"...

  • @PonyguyV6 what a marauder from 69??? 70? i cant find any info about that...

  • u call that a cat?

  • "Science helped create" [it]. LOL

  • These are much smaller than the 1978 and earlier Marquis. I prefer the 1975-1978 Mercury Marquis myself.

  • What are the benefits of the 75-78? Did the lack of lock-up give it a smoother ride?

  • By 1978 that generation of Marquis was refined and known as the best fullsize car in the US. A 460 v8 was common as was 4 wheel disc brakes with hydroboost which was not available on the 1979 and later models. I think the 1978 and earlier cars do ride smoother probably because of that big heavy body they have. They also have those cool looking hideaway headlights.

  • I am looking a 1988 or 1978 model. I trying to get the better one of the two. now the 78 has 105,000 mile on it and the 88 has 83.000 miles on it . My frist car was a1989 grand marguis, miss that old thing but the frame was rusting out on the passager side but it had 220,000 on it

  • @NDW58

The '75-'78 and the '88-91's are my favorites... I've got an '88 Crown Vic (just under 90,000 mi) as my daily driver and just got a '78 Colony Park (about 120,000 mi) as my summer car.

  • I have the 79 Lincoln Collectors series shown in this ad. 30 years later It's still a great car that Iturns heads whenever I am out!!!!

  • a work of art.

  • When I was a kid, we had a 1979 Mercury Marquis in midnight blue. That was the nicest car we ever owned. Not too many of them around anymore. It was a wonderful car.

  • Ride with the Cat! MEOW! Plus the voiceover was "The Voice of ABC" himself, Ernie Anderson.

  • They sure were nicer back then. Look at the crap Lincoln and Cadillac put out now. Nothing elegant about them at all, either in styling or their names.

  • Did the 1979 Mercurys in this commercial come with a chime or a buzzer?

  • buzzer

  • man they made mercury cougar station wagons and sedans wow.

  • That Marquis and the Lincolns were very nice-looking luxury cars...much better looking than they are today.

  • That 1979 Mercury Marquis body continued up to 1991, but even though the square body style went, the frame of it still remains under the new Crown Victoria's and Grand Marquis' with minor changes, for almost 30 years! Very clever on Fords part! I've owned a '79 LTD coupe, 90 Grand Marquis, 91 LTD Crown Vic and a 2000 Crown Vic.

  • Wow!! I haven't seen that tv ad or those cars for ears!! It's funny cause I owned every car shown except for the capri....but I clicked this video to see the 1979 Mecury Cougar XR-7, another car I owned, but it wasn't here. Cool vintage ad though!

  • I remember that cheesy-ass cat growl noise the most. L/M used that in their ads for frickin' ever back in the day.

  • I would like to see more 1970's Continental and Mark Series commercials

  • cheesy!
