Illmatic is better than rasonable doubt and ready to die..nine pure hard tracks, no chorus shit, just next level intelligent rhymes, it was written is immense in its own right..Nas as and artist if you know his entire carrer and understand his tunes as his career progessed you know he's not fucked with, his unreleased catalogue is off the hook too

i hope you dont read my comments and interpret as im attacking you or coming off as hostel and confrontational, i usually read over my comments when i post them and i just now noticed that they can be taken in that way, which is why i wanted to post another comment clarifying just that, i dont mean to sound rude & disrespectful, i just get serious when talkin bout this sometimes & usually when i have these talks, they go from conversation to debate to argument, so i just wanted to clear that up
im sick of people comparing every subsequent nas album to illmatic, as far as im concerned this album is better than illmatic: it has more songs instead of less than 10 new songs, it has a more colorful soundscape to back the lyrics, the wordplay, rhyme schemes, and lyrics are more advanced and improved, and just overall better songs, illmatic was great but it absolutely had flaws and was far from perfect or greatest, this album and lost tapes were easily better than illmatic
@hiphopdisciple555 One thing I notice about your opinion is that you fail to address the flaws Illmatic had. Don't get me wrong, It Was Written is ILL and Nasty Nas is definitely spittin' that real shit start to finish. But you gotta be kidding me when you say "was easily better than Illmatic". Play all Illmatic right now, load up the lyrics to each song n try to flow along with Nas. You'll soon realize why this album was so groundbreaking in a time where rhyme schemes and vocab were dead simple
@fuckyou1337 there are many points that need to be addressed so ill just get down to it, first - i didnt fail to mention illmatics flaws, i did exactly the opposite, go back and read my comment and i very clearly get into it with much detail and reason, im glad to hear you liked it was written too, i hope your one of the fans that always liked it as opposed to the type of fan i described in my first comments
@hiphopdisciple555 , second - i was not kidding when i said its easily better than illmatic, i was very much dead serious and sincere about that and made it very clear why i felt that way, what you didn't know about me is that i've listened to illmatic and read/followed the lyrics millions and millions of times for many years, i've done that with every nas album and many albums of countless other emcees, i listen and study both as a fan and student of the craft, and the truth of the matter is
@hiphopdisciple555 that the lyricism, specifically the rhyme schemes/wordplay, were not unbelievable and out of this world, the entire album consisted of rhyme schemes that spanned no more than 2 lines in length, in lots of cases it only spanned 1 line, which by lyricist standards is absolute disastrous and disgraceful, guys like rakim and kool g were doing crazier shit with their wordplay before nas, and countless emcees were doing even crazier wordplay after nas
@hiphopdisciple555 if you want to break down every song on illmatic and dissect them by each song, im fine with that, but one thing is absolutely for sure in which i want to make crystal clear again....i was absolutely not kidding when making any comments i made, i dont joke around with this shit, i take it too seriously for that
the lyrical craftsmanship is just impeccable, all the elements you need to have great lyrics is represented in this album: multis, wordplay, metaphors, large vocabulary, vivid and descriptive imagery/storytelling, great songwriting/structure, and great beats that perfectly compliments both the lyrics and tone of the album, the album has cohesiveness and consistency, and nas is able to accomplish all this with almost no guest features, just a couple songs have guest verses, he truly holds his own
to all those critics and fans who condemned it then now changing their position so they can fit in with the mass majority, you didn't like the album because it had mafioso and name brand references in the lyrics...how fucking dare you, how the fuck do you look yourself in the mirror after disrespecting an album that contained such gems as the message, take it in blood, I GAVE YOU POWER, a song that rivals i used to love her as the best metaphorical and conceptual song of all time, you r horrible
unlike most so called nas or hip hop fans, i was a huge big fan of this album and loved it from the FIRST time i heard it all the way to now, it just disgusts me how insincere and flip flop people are, do half of you even remember that when this album first came out it was crucified and hated on so viciously from both critics and fans, giving it reviews with some of the most disrespectful shit this album did not deserve, now everybody decided to change their mind on it, such fuckin bullshit
My favorite Nas track. Most his shit off the chain but there's just somethin real special about this one, the right sample rocked the right way on the right beat w/ the right flow
@buzztubebuzztube I don't know why you bother to mention Eminems name on this. Em and Nas are both great, but they're in their own different leagues, they have different styles.
Yeah, this is from back in the day, but Eminem also had an album titled "Infinite" come out the same year as "It Was Written".

Another hyped Nas sound. I love it when Nas tracks are hyped beats. Nigga, I like to move. I got soul. You didn't know. This "Memory Lane", and "Nas Is Like", and "It ain't hard to tell" I love hype sounding beats. I got soul like James Brown and Rakim, ya'll better act like ya'll know. That's why this rap of today has got to go. Brothers be acting like they don't know how to move and be hyped.

This is my favorite Nas song ever. If you really listen to the lyrics in this song you will wonder how someone comes up with lyrics that crazy.
Oh and does ANYBODY have the Instrumental for this song?!?!?! It's nearly impossible to find

dats wats up this is my favorite nas classic besides the message
beaverboiable 2 years ago
@beaverboiable yeah the message was a classic song as well. But in my opinion this and What Goes Around (Poison) were a couple of his best songs (Lyrically).
