Awesome Video! This guy makes all my Math teachers I had in school years ago look like dumb books worms that couldn't explain crap they were teaching and just gave us a book and expected us to instantly know what they did.
@theseventhson95 It is called Pi. In the **ENGLISH** language, The Greek letter "Pi" is pronounced the same as food "Pie." It is different for other languages.
@theseventhson95 Well, actually, no... you did not say the the same thing I did. What you originally wrote sounded like you were attempting to correct something I said about Pi. What I wrote was a clear explanation to the pronunciation of Pi in the english language. My comment was neither pointless nor stupid.
@KleerSkeleton Look VERY carefully at the display. You have an "i" at the end of the line. This means the answer is imaginary. If you change your calculator's settings to "REAL" (go to "MODE" area), you would then get an error. The calculator is designed to compute in both modes (real and imaginary), depending on the level of math you want to do
Mr. Auss sorry idk how to spell your name. I was wanting to share something else before I move on, and the point 3214 on the video goes over the sets and choosing from the sets with interaction. It is really great help for me but it speeds up later where it is not as effective in interaction because we don't have to time to look at it and think. It was perfect at first. Maybe in later lessons make more interactive problems so we can have someone with us to check our answers. no room to type ty
@Debedeb This was my first attempt at a math lesson, so it is not as good as future ones. I do my best to try to improve myself with every new lesson. You DO realize you have all the time in the world, simply by PAUSING the video? Also, I recommend reading the PDF math notes for each lesson BEFORE watching the videos. These are found at my website. Oh... the last name is "Ast," but you can just call me "Luis."
Actually I remember being teached to write this way: 5 2/3= 5 times 2/3 or 5*2/3 instead of: 5 2/3 = 5 and 2/3 = 5 + 2/3 wich will explain. Did you ever come across this kind of problem before?
I see. But then how come I assumed that 5 2/3 is actualy 5 times 2/3 wich will be 10/3 will it not? I do not come from english backround so please tell me where I am mistaking
@TheSync76 The math notation in your country MAY be different. I use standard American notation and sometimes Mexican math methods of teaching in my videos. 5 2/3 is a mixed number and means 5+2/3.
Don't mean to be rude but since no one picked this up: from the last part of your lesson, more exactly min. 35:42, is really 5 2/3 = 17/3? I am asking this even if it might be a small mistake as I can get really confused with maths and if you say 2+2=5 and insist on it I will believe you! Thanks in advance for clarifiyng this matter fo me...
@TheSync76 Yes, 5 and 2/3 is 17/3. I cover this in my fractions lesson (Basic Math, Lesson 6), but I can quickly do the conversion: To convert 5 and 2/3 to an improper fraction, multiply the 5 by the 3, to get 15, then add the numerator 2 to this. Now place the 17 over the original denominator of 3 to get 17/3. I hope this helps!

@ggg56yyggg It may help a little, as should the rest of my "Basic Math" videos. I am making new test prep videos especially for the ASVAB, but they will not be ready for a month or two.
@ggg56yyggg I should mention that ASVAB math is no diffrent than the math you do at High School and even before that. Just refresh and look back in High School. If you are currently in high school, im sure any math teacher will be more than willing to help you out. Z is used for the set of integers, apparently due to N. Bourbaki. (N. Bourbaki was a group of mostly French mathematicians which began meeting in the 1930s, aiming to write a thorough unified account of all mathematics.) The letters stand for the German Quotient and Zahlen. These notations occur in Bourbaki's Algébre, Chapter 1. Zahlen is a German word for number.
In case no one answered the question (couldn't be bothered to read through the pages of comments) it's a 'z' due to the German word for 'number' - 'zahlen'.

@meatisdeliciouse 0.2 cubed is not 0.8, it is 0.008. You can use long division or convert decimal to a fraction first to do the division. For example, dividing by 0.6 is the same as dividing by 6/10 = 3/5. To do this, multiply by its reciprocal (5/3).

The number line was my very first frustrating math experience in elementary school. I had no problems learning the numbers, or calculating with them, but for some reason I simply couldn't understand the number line. O.0
I remember being immensely annoyed, especially since the other children seamed to simply go with it and didn't bother at all!
i want to say that the lessons ive watched so far are brilliant, but where can i download the notes for these lessons? can u provide a link pls, thanks videomathtutor your the best!
@fadermusprime Visit my official website. There, you will find a link at the top of the page to the PDF Printshop. You can download all free notes there (some you would need to pay for, or get free if you buy the DVDs from me).
I hate to break it to you but this is rediculous. numbers are a form of initialing or mapping. numbers are designed to get rid of oral memorization of amounts and make a map of inventory. 1=O, 2=OO, 3=OOO and 4=OOOO. what your counting can change, the picture symbol, the physical number does not. this is why math is bottoming out, high level math students dont understand basic number concepts. numbers are a form of initialing for pictographs, designed to do away with drawing objects to count.
@casunshine84 What exactly was ridiculous? I am not sure what you mean by "oral memorization." High level math students are not doing well, for MANY reasons. Books have been written on this. Try to re-write what to wrote in a more organized way. It almost reads as an incoherent rant.
Hey yeah your videos are good and stuff but I only have like 2weeks before i take my GED and I need loads of help in math to pass but I am clueless in fractions and algebra and need serious help so......please help me.......-_-'
Thanks so much for your Video :). I am the one who was born and lives my whole life in Asia before I'd moved to America. I'm in 9th grade 20 years ago in my country but I coudn't remember anything, now I'd trying to understand and learn math in english to help me go back to school this year.
im 12 in the 6th grade and i DONT understand math at ALL Help !!!!! plz its the end of the year and i have a D in my math class can u give me any other websites that will help me (were learning about Inverse Operations) Thanks
Me too. When I was in 6th class, I wasn't be able to do simple fractions and other simple things. Now, in 12th I am suffering. We have things like Inverse trig, integration, differentiation, application of derivatives and what not.
I am geting allote of help from this video,If i have know you 10 years ago my life would have been diffrent.i always felt stupit because I could not understand math, but now with the help of this video I am gain my confedance back and feel good because I can learn math now.Thank you for your help.
@rnmechel First off, you don't have to write me the same comment a zillion times. Once is enough. The comments don't appear right away, since I need to approve them first.
To answer your question, you can download the notes at my website. URL is at the top of the whiteboard in video. You then can go to the PDF printshop or to the web page that has this video. The link to notes is there.
According Dummit and Foote, the symbol Z for the whole comes from the German word "Zahl" (which means "number"). It first appeared in the book Algebra of Bourbaki.

It is not always to school's fault. It is a complicated issue. Teachers, parents AND students all need to make more of an effort to improve the education system of the U.S.
things dont change though IMO i can sit here to the cows come home Im never going to get maths. I was bad at chess in my teens, im bad at it in my 20's, its in the genetics unfortunently
im 23 and can barely work out a percentage, was born mentally retarded with Maths. The plus side for other strugglers out there is I get by fine and make a good living without it.
does anyone else find it nonsense that whole numbers are considered different than counting numbers just because of a zero? whole numbers are fact, counting numbers are when people count the whole numbers but are too stupid to count the zero. counting numbers don't belong, they are an action, not a fact.
It is not nonsense or stupid. Please take some time to read up on the history of zero and numbers to better understand. The great Greek thinkers who gave us much with philosophy and geometry, did not have a zero in their number system. Were they stupid? The numbers you and I use were once considered "witchcraft" in Europe, and people were forbidden to use them at one time.
@videomathtutor we can't teach people both (whole and counting) just because they are separated by a zero. one thing that history teaches us is that we can change. just because greeks did this doesn't mean we have to. if they didn't have zero, how did they represent nothing?
by the way - people thought the world was flat at one time and we learned otherwise. we can learn otherwise in other subjects.
Sure can can teach both groups of numbers. I just gave an example previously. One big part of math is that it categorizes numbers. Sometimes, it is necessary to have zero in the group, sometimes it would be worse thing to have a zero around! One number CAN make a difference! Sometimes it may be needed to look at negative numbers too! Or how about imaginary numbers? All have a role to play in math. If everything can be groups into just one big group, and nothing else, it would get boring fast!
@videomathtutor too many categories = too much to learn. zero is just as important as any other number, it's sad to read how dismissive you are of it and in the next line say one number can make a difference. without zero, we have no negative. just because i don't approve of counting numbers as a group, doesn't mean i think we should have one group. math will never be boring. it's not grouping that makes math what it is, it's the information.
There is no one answer to this question. I know students who find algebra easy, then struggle with Geometry, and vice versa. It also depends on the quality of instruction you get in class (teacher AND textbook). I found both easy, but then again, I love math, and I had great teachers and textbooks. Yes, I was lucky!
Also, if a real number basically means any number on the line, what's the point of even having rational and irrational number classifications? why not just always use real numbers?
Well, we math folk are ALWAYS trying to find patterns and classifications. It makes things clearer, at times. We don't always use real numbers, since an answer may be imaginary! Also, it is good to distinguish between rationals and irrationals, since rationals CAN be represented by a fraction, irrationals can't. So a distinction is made.
By your argument, we should forget about classifying animas as mammals, reptiles, birds, etc. since all are vertebrates! Putting items in groups can be useful.
My main issue is with natural numbers, just seems like a kinda pointless classification when whole numbers do the same thing with an extra 0. But I guess there's a reason to everything lol
Irrationals have an infinite decimal that do NOT have a set, repeating pattern. They CAN have patterns, but if the same set of numbers repeat over and over, then the number is rational.
I ship worldwide, but keep in mind the DVDs are in NTSC (North American/Japan) format, NOT the European PAL format. Your DVD playing PC should be able to watch it.
Also you cannot represent an irrational number with a fraction. For example 0.5=1/2 but the square-root of 2 does not have a fraction representation. The proof of this is quite long, and you can look it up on youtube or elsewhere.
I never love math because it was never made this simple. I am 33 years old. Thanks, I know you are going to be very rich because of what you are doing for others.
Actually, it does repeat forever but in a real answer it would stop at a certain point, for an example 0.9 repeating would eventually become 1. So if 0.9 were to contiue forever it would go to infinity.
I would recommend to avoid describing the whole calculator thing. Stick to the math, there are so many calculators out there it takes people away from the math, they just learn how to use a calculator and forget what they are actually doing. Its a reason for the decline in math ability around the world. We can all learn to type, but we forget to learn!
I completely disagree with you. This is the 21st Century, and I feel calculators are an important part of learning. If a student does not need to do the calculator keystrokes, he/she can just skip that part of the video. Yes, there are many different calculator models, but I feel the TI-84 is the best overall model for use in most classrooms.
Hey thank you a lot for making these videos public on YouTube! I haven't taken a math class in years and this is helping me freshen up for my placement test to head to a university next fall.
Watching my videos will help you. I hope to get ASVAB videos out, but not for awhile. Sorry. I do recommend books on my website. Click the "Bookstore" link on my website.
Your setup is really nice. Good job! However, I don't see how more advanced problems could be given a thorough explaination on such little board space. You should consider LiveScribe Smart Pen with a little feed of you talking aswell!
Check out my videos if your interested in what that would look like.
My videos are designed to be viewed on iPods as well as computer monitors. I took a peek at your videos. They would not be very visible on small video devices. More advanced problems will be done on multiple board images. Students also have access to printable notes they can also use to follow along.
I would not know. I hope to one day travel back to Canada to see what your math program is like. Math is probably one of the most universal subjects out there, so I imagine is it not that different.
I know you want to keep it simple, but you should have explained irrational numbers a little better, and provide diferences between rational and irrational. This kind of stuff is what questions in exams are made of. Anyway, great video !

Congrats on these tutorials man. You're doing a great service for people all over the world. And you're making math fun again. Props!
Krumbz2003 1 year ago
I hate to break it to you but this is rediculous. numbers are a form of initialing or mapping. numbers are designed to get rid of oral memorization of amounts and make a map of inventory. 1=O, 2=OO, 3=OOO and 4=OOOO. what your counting can change, the picture symbol, the physical number does not. this is why math is bottoming out, high level math students dont understand basic number concepts. numbers are a form of initialing for pictographs, designed to do away with drawing objects to count.
casunshine84 1 year ago
@casunshine84 What exactly was ridiculous? I am not sure what you mean by "oral memorization." High level math students are not doing well, for MANY reasons. Books have been written on this. Try to re-write what to wrote in a more organized way. It almost reads as an incoherent rant.

According Dummit and Foote, the symbol Z for the whole comes from the German word "Zahl" (which means "number"). It first appeared in the book Algebra of Bourbaki.

does anyone else find it nonsense that whole numbers are considered different than counting numbers just because of a zero? whole numbers are fact, counting numbers are when people count the whole numbers but are too stupid to count the zero. counting numbers don't belong, they are an action, not a fact.
99mees 2 years ago
It is not nonsense or stupid. Please take some time to read up on the history of zero and numbers to better understand. The great Greek thinkers who gave us much with philosophy and geometry, did not have a zero in their number system. Were they stupid? The numbers you and I use were once considered "witchcraft" in Europe, and people were forbidden to use them at one time.
videomathtutor 2 years ago
@videomathtutor we can't teach people both (whole and counting) just because they are separated by a zero. one thing that history teaches us is that we can change. just because greeks did this doesn't mean we have to. if they didn't have zero, how did they represent nothing?
by the way - people thought the world was flat at one time and we learned otherwise. we can learn otherwise in other subjects.
99mees 2 years ago
Sure can can teach both groups of numbers. I just gave an example previously. One big part of math is that it categorizes numbers. Sometimes, it is necessary to have zero in the group, sometimes it would be worse thing to have a zero around! One number CAN make a difference! Sometimes it may be needed to look at negative numbers too! Or how about imaginary numbers? All have a role to play in math. If everything can be groups into just one big group, and nothing else, it would get boring fast!
videomathtutor 2 years ago
@videomathtutor too many categories = too much to learn. zero is just as important as any other number, it's sad to read how dismissive you are of it and in the next line say one number can make a difference. without zero, we have no negative. just because i don't approve of counting numbers as a group, doesn't mean i think we should have one group. math will never be boring. it's not grouping that makes math what it is, it's the information.
99mees 2 years ago
I don't think I was dismissive.

Is Geometry more difficult or is Algebra more in your opinion?
freezinghotter 1 year ago
There is no one answer to this question. I know students who find algebra easy, then struggle with Geometry, and vice versa. It also depends on the quality of instruction you get in class (teacher AND textbook). I found both easy, but then again, I love math, and I had great teachers and textbooks. Yes, I was lucky!
videomathtutor 1 year ago
Great easy to understand
jdevans2u 2 years ago
Also, if a real number basically means any number on the line, what's the point of even having rational and irrational number classifications? why not just always use real numbers?
HowAboutSomeTruth1 2 years ago
Well, we math folk are ALWAYS trying to find patterns and classifications. It makes things clearer, at times. We don't always use real numbers, since an answer may be imaginary! Also, it is good to distinguish between rationals and irrationals, since rationals CAN be represented by a fraction, irrationals can't. So a distinction is made.
By your argument, we should forget about classifying animas as mammals, reptiles, birds, etc. since all are vertebrates! Putting items in groups can be useful.
videomathtutor 2 years ago
My main issue is with natural numbers, just seems like a kinda pointless classification when whole numbers do the same thing with an extra 0. But I guess there's a reason to everything lol
HowAboutSomeTruth1 2 years ago
Yep. That extra zero makes ALL the difference. For example, the ancient Romans did not use zero in their number system.
videomathtutor 2 years ago
So a rational number can have an infinite decimal? so what is the difference about an irrational number?
HowAboutSomeTruth1 2 years ago
Irrationals have an infinite decimal that do NOT have a set, repeating pattern. They CAN have patterns, but if the same set of numbers repeat over and over, then the number is rational.
videomathtutor 2 years ago
Yep got that, should have watched a bit more before posting lol.
Just wondering, I'm interested in getting an algebra tutorial from your website, do you send things to other countries or only U.S.?
HowAboutSomeTruth1 2 years ago
I ship worldwide, but keep in mind the DVDs are in NTSC (North American/Japan) format, NOT the European PAL format. Your DVD playing PC should be able to watch it.
videomathtutor 2 years ago
Also you cannot represent an irrational number with a fraction. For example 0.5=1/2 but the square-root of 2 does not have a fraction representation. The proof of this is quite long, and you can look it up on youtube or elsewhere.

I never love math because it was never made this simple. I am 33 years old. Thanks, I know you are going to be very rich because of what you are doing for others.
mcbeanjr 2 years ago
Actually, it does repeat forever but in a real answer it would stop at a certain point, for an example 0.9 repeating would eventually become 1. So if 0.9 were to contiue forever it would go to infinity.

I love the positive response, but you need to give this gentleman true credit

I would recommend to avoid describing the whole calculator thing. Stick to the math, there are so many calculators out there it takes people away from the math, they just learn how to use a calculator and forget what they are actually doing. Its a reason for the decline in math ability around the world. We can all learn to type, but we forget to learn!
stedav 2 years ago
I completely disagree with you. This is the 21st Century, and I feel calculators are an important part of learning. If a student does not need to do the calculator keystrokes, he/she can just skip that part of the video. Yes, there are many different calculator models, but I feel the TI-84 is the best overall model for use in most classrooms.
videomathtutor 2 years ago
Math is declining because of poor teaching techniques and lousy textbooks, it has little to do with using calculators.

Your setup is really nice. Good job! However, I don't see how more advanced problems could be given a thorough explaination on such little board space. You should consider LiveScribe Smart Pen with a little feed of you talking aswell!
Check out my videos if your interested in what that would look like.
Overall i give it 5 stars!
Spread the knowledge friend!

My videos are designed to be viewed on iPods as well as computer monitors. I took a peek at your videos. They would not be very visible on small video devices. More advanced problems will be done on multiple board images. Students also have access to printable notes they can also use to follow along.
