I watched this on acid and no disrespect to the film or David Lynch for doing this but it was totally fucking insane !
First off all the actors in the background seemed to morph into like 1940's characters as the stranger came in and as he went out at the end they all morphed back to normal. Also Robert Blake who plays this part with pure skill seemed to morph into some type of demon all in all a right skullfuck type situation was great tho !
@ichiboy900 My understanding is this: the main protagonist of the film has bipolar disorder or something, and he says at one point of the film that he likes to remember things his own way rather than how they happened. He fears the mystery man because the mystery man films what actually happens and film doesn't lie. The mystery man also says "it is not my custom to go where I am not invited", which relates to an old proverb that evil can do no harm unless it is invited into the home.
The Mysterous Man represents jealously. He 'invited' him in to his consciousness and home after he suspected his wife of having an affair with Dick Laurent. He his only accustomed to go where he is wanted in peoples minds. If you look at the phone, the last six digits he dials are '666' which is also a representation of the devil. There is a saying that evil must be invited into the home.
@LexLiebert Now that I've watched it a few more times, I think it might just be himself, his real self. He tries to hide it with the body of the young mechanic and the middle-aged jazz player, but the one constant between those two worlds is the mysterious man, his evil soul. His skin is so pale and white instead of a darker color because brightness can't be avoided or hidden, just like his sins.
BEST movie ever BEST scene ever and best actor ever (Robert Blake) this is from the UNIVERSAL release, right? the old universal relase was better than blu ray or the special editions cuz of the darker tones and more saturation/contrast love those red/evil lips from the mystery man especially when he's laughing!
It's weird to think that only a year before Bill Pullman had been in the blockbuster of the summer, Independence day. You don't get much more different than that in tone.
I heard Fracture sample this scene so I had to check it out. Check out the song Fracture - Phonecall if you've good bass. It's perfect for this scene.
Amazing scene ... so morbid, The actor Robert Bake was put in prison for killing his wife in real life LOL he hasnt got a penny either ?!?
