Chaos mages are the best! Turn a Witch or Vampire or Pegasus into a cow or a sheep and the battle is yours lol. Defense is low for the barbarian warriors, but their attack and Life more than make up for it. Have a Water Mage, a Chaos mage, and a Chaos warrior as Champions. BAM! Healing Waters from the Water mage instantly heals your whole party, Chaos mages can reincarnate your men into lion, tigers and bears, and the Chaos Warrior champion is just a BAMF.
The best strategy for Chaos: start with a mage lord, Reincarnation spell, and 2-3 Goblins depending on difficulty. Use Reincarnation when a Goblin dies to get a monster like rock troll or even a dragon. Just watch the upkeep costs.
I couldn´t kill Balkoth because he moved more squares than my party and I could never get him. He was the last enemy alive. That was 12 years ago, but anyway...

I'm personally the type of player who's more liable to cast blind range on the vampire and let my stickthrowers do him in after his defence drops to zero (primarily because blind range costs far less mana than polymorph other), but hey, whatever works... :)
Chaos (and indeed all the other factions too) is vastly improved in Mantera's GS5 mod. In addition to their basic units now being able to heal their lost health very fast to make up for their lack of armour, they also get goblins that can level up (ironically becoming in many ways a superior military unit when compared with berserkers) and raiders than can throw their axes a short distance, amongst other small changes and rebalances that make the whole game that much more fun to play

Haha I used to do that too! After a battle in a place with 2 levels i'd just kill off my own units and reincarnate them. Once I got like 3 goats and 2 chickens lol. I hated getting chickens, dragons as well since they cost a fortune to keep lol. I loved getting the rock trolls as well, or tigers lol. Great game.. Too bad there isn't anything like this now a days =(

There mages sucked buttt....but everything else was decent.
I always laugh when I read the Swordsmen's description of "displaying their naked chests proudly" haha!
Great race though,great game, better quality than most games now a days.... :'(

Activision got the rights to Sierra's games. Remake, or release the original one as open source, like Star Control 2 -> Ur Quan Masters.

It is fun, but they have low defense. It's one of the hardest faiths to level up, IMO.

chaos was a fun one to play with,
warriors had cool artifacts and were awsome against most other things in the game and could even go toe to toe with balkoth if properly equiped
theifs were awsome here and had pretty cool weapons and were good at spying
mages here had some awsome spells that could turn ur dead troops into things u cant get elsewhere. also they had some other neat attacks and tricks.
