Wee Rabbie was, by all accounts, eminently qualified to write about love having been hugely (?) successful in the romance stakes!... cute guy judging by the famous portrait. Not only a brilliant writer but a great humanitarian. God bless the Scots and the Irish ! (.. admittedly mae mither's (my mother's) name is Patricia Mary Logan !!).
Brilliant song by the masterful Fureys and davey arthur, Alas never to be together again ...so tragic but i have thememories and i love this song, finbars voice and what a band
Og Vi sang Stand By Me !! Vokal og accapella ;-) Squ stadig forelsket i den tøz -- Sabrina Adeldam !! ;-)
listening to this I look at my kids and Im sad because this reminds me of my dad who they never got chance to meet as hes died young but I remember we use to listen to this on car journeys he couldnt sing but it was fun to listen to him ,I miss you even after 20 years god bless xxx
I am proud to say I was born on January 25th, which is the birthday of Robbie Burns, who wrote this most beautiful song . Thank you Finbar Furey for making this timeless song come alive for my generation
The Fureys are Irish Gypsies, and proud of it (Shelta) Not Scottish although they are inter related . Anyway they have good music. Try listening to John Barry the Travelling Man! He sings hymns and is a real Irish Gypsy. Why we Scots and Irish are so inter-related is due to the Famines and Diasporas. Also the Irish Cattle drovers , some were women, went with cattle to the likes Gatehouse on Fleet at Galloway quite close to Robbie Burns. we r sentimental thro music for our forefathers
i will sound like a right eejit asking this but i saw the fureys play last night, bliss! thery sang a song that i recognise and now im home i cant place it , the chorus says something about cliffs or moutains and bumbling heather.please someone help !LOL
You have purchased the cheepo Burns edition - 3 for a pound at Wal Mart.
When Bobby Burns wrote ' fair art thou' to his 'bonnie lass' he was emphasising her loveliness. As this lovely version of the song testifies. Spot on Fureys and, you too, Davey Arthur, strumming guitar at the back.
Whether there is a slight variation in the wording is really rather irrelevant--this version is beautiful and quite capable of bringing a tear to the eye.
i agree. Most folk songs have variations in both the lyrics and the music. For me this is by far the best version of this song, although the version by the Corries comes close behind.
O my Luve is like a red, red rose Thats newly sprung in June O my Luve is like the melodie Thats sweetly play'd in tune. As fair art thou, my bonnie lass, So deep in luve am I And I will luve thee still, my dear, Till a the seas gang dry Till a the seas gang dry, my dear, And the rocks melt wi the sun I will love thee still, my dear, While the sands o life shall run. And fare thee weel, my only Luve And fare thee weel, awhile! And I will come again, my Luve, Tho it were ten thousand mile.
Then let us pray that come it may As come it will and a' that That sense and worth o'er a' the earth Shall bear the gree and a' that For a' that and a' that It's coming yet for a' that That man to man the warld o'er Shall brothers be for a' that For a' that and a' that It's coming yet for a' that That man to man the warld o'er Shall brothers be for a' that....and shame on you that post bile over a Burn's song.
My mother was an Irish Catholic who served with the RAF during WW2, My Father was a Scots protestant who served in Korea and I served with the British army defending Muslims in Bosnia pre UNIFOR and now I am married to a very decent English girl and we have three very thoughtful children who are of no religion what so ever! Tell me which one do I kill first? Or should I carry on and teach them that killing for religion is a silly thing to do.
I know there is a religious element since Henry VIII left the Catholic church but this whole problem began long before that. The Germanic tribes that came to Brit and took over skillfully divided the Celts and exploited them. The same tactic was used successfully by the Normans in Ireland. If the Celts could just put religion behind them in Ireland as Wolfe Tone tried to do unsuccessfully everyone would be better off! Scots and Welsh have fared the worst, still being under English rule!
you can belong to a certain religion and and never act religiously it`s a person acting humanely that honors his religion. The native Irish were Roman Catholic and the transplanted Scots and English were of differant Protestants sects and since they were invaders that forced the native people off their land they became enemies, worshiping in differant houses was not the original problem.I believe it was the invaders that invented the good king billy saga and Catholic pogroms were born.
I agree. But just to clarify Davey Arthur was born in Donegal Ireland. A simple Google search will let you bring up his bio to verify what I am saying is true.
Aye, and vice versa! Not sure it is a Scots tune anyway! It's Burns' lyrics to be sure, but the tune? It says "to the tune of Major Graham" in my Burns anthology, but that could be any folk tune, even English, (perish the thought!) And isn't Davey Arthur a Scot anyway?
I once was a Jersey Boy, traveled to Australia, served in wars not of my making, fathered five wonderful children to a lovely McDougall Lass, and I dream of all things Celt.
great song but cant you guys get a life and stop bangin on about bein a "celt blah blah" very boring...but beautiful song might i add and also these guys sing the best version of sweet sixteen if anyone has that one thanks
I have all of their albums, even some of the rare ones, Been to see them more times than I can count, going over to Jersey to see them on my birthday, this year(17th March), & of ALL their reordings, THIS is my fav one. Reminds me of a lost love.... Never fails to bring a tear to my eye!

You have to hand it to Rabbie Burns, he definately had a way with words, beautifully sung by the Fureys.

There is an old Scots saying.
The Irish are Celtic
The welsh are Gaelic
The Scots are Celtic
And the English are just Cunts.
