I think the idea is to go into college to test out what you might like in your first two years; specializing in the second two in the areas you liked the most. Perhaps continuing on after that should the situation warrant it.
And in the end, if for you it has all been for naught, then at the very least you'll have become more knowledgeable about the world around you; which is hardly a bad thing.
I still think standardised education is great but unfortunately only very few schools allow free thought individual assessment and the ability to stand there and go yes you are smart and you are not smart you move ahead and you stay behind because everyone is afraid of hurting feelings when in truth you are damaging them further. If we allow people to differentiate from each other and become individuals with personal strengths and ways of dealing with weaknesses we will be a better species.
@1stNightingale It depends on what subject matter you're talking about. When it comes down to subject matters such as pharmacology, how individual can the curriculum be?
@ttiiyy Well ofcourse but im talking more about the development of an individual through the education system not the specific of what they are studying. Someone who studies maths should not be regarded as a nerd or dumb if hes slow at it as we are all individuals who work individually. If treated like so most will be able to learn everything in their own way as i did maths. They will also learn what matters most in life which is to adapt and progress in every situation.
@16242T idiot, he said he would not try to talk anyone out of education, but he would not try to talk them into it either. Did you not listen to the video, you moron? he's taking a central agnostic position on college.
Although I respect a lot of what this man is saying, the problem is that a system that he would wish to implement would be much more difficult, if not impossible. You'd have to put some 5 year olds ahead a grade, you'd have to let engineers be engineers without any engineering qualifications, what exactly is he proposing? some standardization is good. I think people should be allowed to Opt Out of fiction books in English class and just take grammar/spelling courses, but beyond that?
If you want to succeed you have to study a lot, college or no college you have to study, period. Funny videos Ken, but you have to back you talks with hard core statistics otherwise you are just a funny, well-spoken man. Not only that you need to offer alternatives.
I sometimes wonder what the hell I'm doing in college. But even if this education doesn't get me anywhere, it doesn't matter, I'm learning. If you think you are wasting your time in school, do whatever you think you should do. If you don't know what else to do with your life, then for God's sake, stay in school.
I'm currently in college and I feel FUCKED UP...........
I don't know what I'm doing here
I don't know what I'm gonna be
Personally I think people go to college now days because its a trend.........they don't pursue college for knowledge, they pursue It because the community said so,YOU GO TO COLLEGE, YOU GET A JOB, DON'T AND YOU'll END UP ON THE STREETS
@frilink Educated, whether really educated or not is in, and being a high school drop out, in the streets. My parents were going to give me the death sentence if I didn't graduate...
It's possibly due to how we teach. If you don't stay on the assembly line that people are put onto, such as going to college, they won't go anywhere. Nobody is told to experiment. That's all wrong now. It's always "After High School, it's straight to college." People aren't taught how to properly increase their knowledge on sharpening skills, exploring or broadening their own horizons, and learning more about where good resources are anymore on educating themselves for their own future careers.
@frilink Well I think college is necessary. I had the same feelings you have now when I went to college, and I blame it on not being exposed to much when I went to primary school. Now I'm 30, I know what I want to do (through exposing myself to things after college) and now it's too damn late.
@frilink Your college degree will demonstrate to all future employers, that you will follow orders, no matter how ridiculous. That you will accept anything told to you, with out question. Welcome to the 21st century.
@frilink Take time off. Not just a year. Follow your nose and do some things that sound at least a little fun (lots of internships for people your age) until you find that you are really interested in something, then go back to college(if appropriate) and pursue it. I didn't realize what I really wanted to do was ethnobotany until I was 24.
Spend some time alone,too..you've spent your whole life being told what to do. Do some healing and service to clear your mind. Chi gung, yoga,
@frilink craftwork, and focussed self-inquiry are useful. Backpacking gets you in touch with yourself. Grace Llewellyn's "The Teenage Liberation Handbook" might be useful. Australia has
special visas for young folks to work on farms..Good luck.
@frilink You're welcome. Google "Camphill community" for an example of the kind of thing that's available now, (spots opening up this summer) that's pretty cool. Seize the day.
Remember there's nothing wrong with you (or life) that you feel fucked up. Feeling that way is a normal reaction to the emptiness, hypocrisy and inhumanity of most of society at present...which most of us get very doused with before we are old enough to create a space for ourselves filled with something better.
@frilink I know exactly how you feel. I'm a senior political science major, and I have no idea what has been the point of these last 4 years, nor do I have any clue what I'm going to do when I graduate.
@frilink Not entirely true though. Some people want to be become engineers and doctors. They know that they will have to go to colleges to receive the proper training.
I work for a major corporation that hires new grads with degrees and roll out the red carpet. Seasoned/Loyal employees working for years here who have a solid understanding and can perform the duties on day one are not even considered for these higher level porsitions simply because they have no higher education. The corp. would rather spend 2 years training a grad. than promoting a seasoned employee. If you are a seasoned employee go to college online and don't stop til you get a PhD.
Education system is to set up to deliver basic level workers in the workforce. Why do people need to take math every year of school same with english. After algebra in Public school what is the point? You will just have to retake the same classes in college. the same with english. A overhaul of the education system is greatly needed
I read his book mentioned at the beginning and have to say I wasn't impressed. Yet another 'find your passion and do that' - really nothing else to say. I agree that university degrees are falling in value as more people do them, but since they are a vital necessity for lower and working class people to get into the knowledge-based middle classes, this will continue. Also, some industries need a qualification (eg nursing) rather than like the oldne days of being trained in-house.
oh my goodness the comments are confusing...I understood this man perfectly well...but you all delve into a world of debate that I just can't understand...there are alot of words there I'm just not familiar with & it seems that alot of it is up for interpretation apparently...aren't there hardcore solid undebatable facts? if there aren't then how can you say your opinion or knowledge is more correct than someone elses? & if there are...what's all the debate about?
The attack on standardized tests is the biggest threat to education today. Yes, people are different and allowances should be made for the abilities of the individual, however, the standardized tests measures the basic competency of the individual against what society expects and requires. And that's what's lacking today, respect for the fundamentals and basics.
I agree. At least in the US academics are falling in value. I feel this is because the government subsidizes it beyond what the market calls for. Or maybe it's the elitists' secret plan to ensure that not even the educated can think critically and rails learned knowledge by compartmentalizing intellectual thought with new terminology and standardization. We will never win!
@JimbobOMG This is why I am a physics major are will one day make a black hole generator that will destroy the world... mmmuuuhahahahahahaaaaaa no but seriously I will.
@JimbobOMG I doubt that government subsidization of education is causing it to fall in value. we live in a free market system where labor is abundant. the system dosnt need us. what happens to the price of something that you have a lot of and dont need?
@aSheeple The more you have to pay for unskilled labor the less there is demand for it. Not everyone is made for college but most colleges won't turn down free $. Soon education loans will be just like sub prime mortgage loans and collages will be asking for bail outs...
@JimbobOMG without subsidization, only the wealthy would be able to make a better life for themselves. a return to aristocracy is not what any of us want.
The proportion bosses take sky-rocketed. Market hype & right 'libertarians' like Greenspan, trickle down gave wealth we all made to the rich. while Reagan broke unions.
Wage earners, AKA the market was forced to borrow for basics like transport, shelter, education.
It killed the economy.
Nobody could afford to buy.
In Tunisia austerity & inequality led to mass strike & revolution led by trade unions.
@marsCubed But the productivity in the US has dropped dramatically just by looking at our export vs imports. Everything else is caused by fiat currency and government control I think.
