MM was a 20th Century Fox star who went on suspension to get both more money and more importantly to Her a choice of Directors and outside pictures. This classic film was made at United Artists with Billy Wilder directing brilliantly. Jack Lemmon was nominated, in a glaring oversight Miss Monroe was not, looking back not only should MM have been nominated, MM should have won the Oscar for her iconic performance. (Simone Signoret won for Room At The Top).

Jack Lemmon(1925-2001) was a great 2 time Academy award winning actor. This movie is wonderful, it holds up today in 2009.

Marilyn Monroe was delicious in this role. Marilyn was a lot smarter than she looked. She put herself out as a bimbo because that's what the studio wanted, but she was a person who loved books and music, and she was into self improvement. She studied at the Actors Studio in New York. I wished she had lived longer to show the world how brilliant she was!

Micky Rooney was on talking about Marilyn, then started to talk about Judy Garland. Wrong! The entire upper berth sequence was done in two takes,,,and there were no re-takes AT ALL in all the beach scenes--in the hot sun, with crowds watching, planes overhead. That;s why she was frustrating--then she'd get stuck on one word! But funny as the years go by, the number of takes she required gets higher? The infamous "me, Sugar" began as 12 takes. NOW it's up to 80.
