Thanks for the memories LMU. I grew up a UNLV fan in Vegas, and loved watching the 2 most exciting teams in college hoops go head to head. Watching 2 squads rack up a combined 232 points in 40 minutes of basketball... what a privilege. RIP Hank
Nov., 1990 A.D. was my favorite times. This was my favorite team. I met Bo on an autograph in ballpoint. The arm cuff machine sinched up on me. It COMMANDED me to go to the hospital across the street to treat my Pulminary Arrhythmia. It said my name! Oct., 2007 I watched a WHOLE HOUR of Glenn Beck. I felt like he was very liberal. My G-Ma died of arrhythmia.
@esquire. I agree with you it was some shady business going on during that NCAA tournament because in my mind duke should have lost that game becasue UNLVs depth did nt really change that much from the previuos year. Also if hank gather did nt succumb they would have beat UNLV or UNLV would have barely eased by them by the skin of there teeth.
This team was fun to watch, but they could NEVER have beaten UNLV. The Runnin' Rebels beat Loyola by 11 in the first game of the '90 seasopn when they had Gathers, by 30 when they didn't. The run n' gun offense only worked when played against teams that weren't as athletic/conditioned . Running the floor was what UNLV liked to do, so Loyola only helped them out by playing their game
I remember watching the LMU/Michigan tournament game on television when I was a kid and thinking it was the most exciting sporting event I had ever seen on television
@silverkatt02 They also shaved points in '91, that's why they lost. Don't believe the BS. If you were of age and watched the 1990 and 1991 national championship games, you didn't even need to know about gambling to know soemthing wasn't right. Duke didn't have the right to be on the same COURT with UNLV, much less win that game in 1991 after UNLV returned the same team WITH DEPTH after stomping their brains in during the 1990 game. And LMU would have beaten them both, but alas.
Being from Miami I was never really interested in college basketball since I played baseball as a kid. One night at around 1am, after espn sportscenter was over, I left the channel on and watched my first Loyola Marymount game. I was captivated. It was the greatest game I had ever seen and I never stopped watching them that year. Til this day, that Loyola Marymount team is still my favorite of all time. Hank, Bo, Fryer, a crazy white guy and some swedish guy. RIP Hank. You were my favorite.
@MiamiPO15 Must be around my age (31, 32), because I stayed up late once and while I've always been into college hoops, I saw them SOMEHOW score 140 on several teams and made it a point to catch as much as I could about them that year.
The game against my Wolverines was something else...UM scored 115...and lost by 34!! I remember late that game where Fryer could have gone in for an uncontested layup, but instead pulled up for a three...and hit it. That said it all there.
89-91 maybe the best years in NCAA tournament history

Loyola was just a fun to watch. Probably a tad excessive offensively, but what a blast staying up late and watching them on ESPN.

I really do believe, if Hank Gathers didn't die, they could have won it all

If it wouldnt have been for UNLV they would have went to the Final Four. Nobody would have beaten UNLV that year.
