Video taping Illinois State police officers is a crime. You're going to jail. And the kid gettin beat up sounds like a total boner. He got what was comin to him.
In the past couple of years, there have been two deaths in construction zones in/around ISU's campus, with the last one being a worker whose crane was crushed - with him inside - when cement fell off a pillar on Christmas Day last year. Yes, it may only be 20 feet, but it's there for a reason: danger. Regardless of how either party acted in this video, it still was a dangerous - and yes, illegal - decision to cut through the zone.
I'm not arguing the law with you. Yes he was resisting arrest, and the cop has the right to do what it takes to detain him. I am saying that it is an arbitrary thing to do though. I have seen the construction zone and it is a road that is closed off for the construction workers to put their equipment on. I am 110% positive that no damage could have been done. I've been a cop on the south side of Chicago for 29 years and a use of force instructor for a dozen years. This cop made one mistake and that was not using ENOUGH force immediately to end the struggle. That's not a personal opinion, that is a very educated professional opinion. Everyone making comments and refusing to help should be administratively punished through the college. Some states have criminal charges for bystanders that refuse to help a cop when asked. Wish Illinois had that law.

The student cut thru a construction zone to get a paper in on time! He was not drinking, he was not doing drugs, he did not hurt anyone. This "officer of the law" followed him to his dorm and began hassling him. Just before the video began the cop punched him in the side of the face. This kid was scared for his safety. On the video was the first mention of being under arrest; the cop was already brutalizing the student. This kind of behavior is what gave rise to the term police brutality.

Even in sleepy little BloNo, there are police officers that do very illegal things. My question is how much abuse towards the officer did we not see before someone started recording? Also, a good point already made : construction zones = instant trespassing offense, due to recent deaths inside of them, and the noose found in one of them two years ago. In the past couple of years, there have been two deaths in construction zones in/around ISU's campus, with the last one being a worker whose crane was crushed - with him inside - when cement fell off a pillar on Christmas Day last year. Yes, it may only be 20 feet, but it's there for a reason: danger. Regardless of how either party acted in this video, it still was a dangerous - and yes, illegal - decision to cut through the zone.

I'm not arguing the law with you. Yes he was resisting arrest, and the cop has the right to do what it takes to detain him. I am saying that it is an arbitrary thing to do though. I have seen the construction zone and it is a road that is closed off for the construction workers to put their equipment on. I am 110% positive that no damage could have been done. At some point though the cop has to ask himself "Who am I helping/protecting by kicking the shit out of this ADULT?"

I take it that it was after dark since the ADULT (no longer a KID) was drunk. The cop saw him walking through/out of the construction zone. Maybe he wanted to write him a warning to not walk through there any construction zone. Maybe get his name so in the morning when the construction crew complains that there was damage the police have a lead. But NO they ADULT thinks he's above the law and resists officer, what's the officer to do, say oh okay forget about it and let him go? ABOVE the LAW!!!!

I think it's a bit over the top that this is all for trespassing in a construction zone. I think the student was stupid for resisting arrest and all. However, on the other hand I think that the cop really went out of his way to make this a problem, especially considering the influx in assaults on campus in recent years. I mean honestly isn't that more important than improperly detaining this kid for trespassing in a construction zone?

You people see 2 minutes of an altercation that went on far longer and you think you know everything. The Officer DID call for backup before the video started recording. The suspect had knocked the communication earpiece offline in the struggle, so the call never got to the backup officers.
And for those of you wanting disciplinary action, it's not happening. Officer was found to have used the correct amount of force. Hell, even the student body president basically called him a douchebag.

I've been a cop on the south side of Chicago for 29 years and a use of force instructor for a dozen years. This cop made one mistake and that was not using ENOUGH force immediately to end the struggle. That's not a personal opinion, that is a very educated professional opinion. Everyone making comments and refusing to help should be administratively punished through the college. Some states have criminal charges for bystanders that refuse to help a cop when asked. Wish Illinois had that law.

The student cut thru a construction zone to get a paper in on time! He was not drinking, he was not doing drugs, he did not hurt anyone. This "officer of the law" followed him to his dorm and began hassling him. Just before the video began the cop punched him in the side of the face. This kid was scared for his safety. On the video was the first mention of being under arrest; the cop was already brutalizing the student. This kind of behavior is what gave rise to the term police brutality.

He fled from the officer who was going to question him about walking through a construction zone (he wasn't arrested for walking through the zone). The cop followed protocol (also called the Use of Force Continuum)
