the altos are out fo tune to eachother- i know this because they caused my fan in my room to bounce back the artificial vibrato, characteristic of two similar but different notes- granted, that may be the recording... also, 3;23 supports your theory, good sir.
i'm learning how to play the alto sax right now. but i learned how play the clarinet first, and i have to tighten my mouth alot more on the clarinet, so i have trouble getting lower notes out on the sax...tips?
Take in more mouthpiece. If you put pressure away from the part that vibrates, it doesn't affect anything. Alto requires you to take in more mouthpiece, anyway. I remember when I switched from alto to baritone, I was amazed at how much mouthpiece I could take in and still have a good sound.
to really practice this play carinet for 5 min and then swithch to sax for 5 mn keep swithching. also u really need to give it more air, if u notice during most concerts the saxs breathe a measure before the clarinets?
very nice i really liked this the bari was a little sharp but it was state and you were probably nervous i know i was at state so that might have affected it a bit but other than that it was excellent i loved the swing part it made me wanna get my tenor out and play along... great job again!!!
I would give this a two out of five(one being the highest) because of a few problem areas. BUT the 1st alto has a very mature sound. At least in my opinion.
that's very true. Im 17 and have been playing for almost 8 years now but that doesnt make me any better than somebody who has been playing for only a year or two even. I am in a Jazz Improvisation group with a kid who hasnt been playing any longer than two years and he may be one of the most promising and enjoyable Alto players I have ever heard. So, how long you have played doesnt make you good, its how you play and practice that makes you good.
it was alright but yea like everyones been sayin u guys arent in tune wth eachother. the bari sounds sharp at parts, but i think its becuz it goes from the higher form of a note 2 the same note an octave lower. sometimes when this happens the lower note sounds sharp
I had to just skip the lioness. It was extremely out of tune and lots of little quirks especially at the beginning. The bari (like everyone has said) is grossly sharp and it just didn't go anywhere...at least the last note was in tune!
On the flip...both your preformances (the district one) of First things First were really well done. If you could get a recording it would make it even better.
you guys should check out the piece "SAXABILITY" by Lennie Niehaus. I played it with my sax quartet in college and for my senior recital. it's one of my favorite and seems like it would be your kind of style.
The bari player also needs to work on his ambusser (I know I spelled it wrong) so the low notes don't sound so harsh and muddy. It doesn't suit the style of the piece.
The thing I don't like about First Things First is that it seems like you are all are not articulating the same which throws the piece off and makes it sound a little sloppy. The altos are slurring up while the bari is popping out accents in the lower register. And again, please get the bari and the tenor in tune. When it gets to where just tenor & bari play, it's still really out of tune.
The piece needs more of the baritone sax IMO. The tenor and the bari are still very out of tune which completely kills the parts where just bari and tenor are playing. The alto part sounds better than in the previous video, but you really need to make it sing out through your instrument. Maybe an open chambered mouthpiece would help.
And please, for the love of god, GET A VIBRATO. It would make this piece sound so much better.
Awesome!! I really enjoyed this, especially First Things First. Lioness was pretty well done too, although I must say your talents were more prominent with the swing style.
Sorry if this is kinda random, the only reason I came across this was I just uploaded a video from a performance my sax quartet just did with Lioness and Hornist's Nest[although I did not record Lioness unfortunately]. Just wanted to say again great job!

Yeah, in the first part of that, the intonation was a huge problem, but the swing part was much better.

how old are you guys?
because im 16 and im sure i could play bari better then that... it really does sound sharp through the beginning part
i also think you should stay with swing music...you do a better job at it

I don't understand why people think age matters in music. "I'm sixteen" Um...Okay? What's your point?
TheresNoEinALLI 3 years ago 5
u're 16... and if you began playing at 15? You are nothing... If I was 40 and had begun at 39? I surely was nothing too...
Saxman1976 3 years ago
I'm sixteen and have been playing Alto for eight years. Does that AUTOMATICALLY make me better than someone playing for four? Absolutely not.

Im sorry but that was a terrible start to the lioness. You're bari player needs to learn some alternate fingerings to fix some notes.
You should stick to your songs with a swing. they are better.
