I'm digging it. A new album with Blacky's bass on it should be great. And they couldn't have asked for a better replacement for Piggy than Dan the Man.
It sounds great but this song has SO MANY riffs, licks, and ideas that they have used time and time again. Do we really need "piggy ideas" from someone who isn't piggy? I would like to hear more of what dan can personally add to the "voivod collective".
@StealthyBass There is still no proof of any god or gods. I don't care if someone can play like someone else or not. I would prefer to hear dan's musical personality rather than hear voivod "play it safe" so to speak.
@creepychris11 If you want to hear Dan's musical personality you should listen to his other bands/projects. Voivod is a CONCEPT, from their album covers to their songs which made these guys recognized worldwide. So, it means that Dan MUST play like Piggy, since now he is part of the Voivod concept. Well, with respect to God, you should know that if someone says "thank God" it doesn't imply that God exists for this person.
@StealthyBass No... he doesn't "have to". I want to hear his personal style IN voivod! They had a different style when newsted was in the band so your argument is weak. I've been a listener of underground music since the eighties so there is no need to try to school me.
@creepychris11 Good point here: Newsted. The first thing he said when he joined Voivod was about how to reproduce Blackys Blower Bass. He was concerned all the time with the Voivod concept, so my argument is not weak. The albuns in which he was a Voivod member are not comparable to Blackys era ones. Why? Because most of the musical concept was created by Piggy AND Blacky. Jason made a good job? Yes, but he was not able to follow Blacky ideas. THIS SONG is a proof of that.
@StealthyBass He came up with a composite of blacky's sound and his own if you want to be technically accurate. He also played his instrument his own way as appropriate for the band's sound. The albums that newsted are on are the best thing that they have done since the eighties! Do you really think that there is anything that newsted couldn't "follow" as far as his technical proficiancy goes? The point of my comment is that we don't need a "nothingface part 2". It's been done.
@creepychris11 If you consider the fact that Voivod almost vanished before that, Voivod, Katorz and Infini are very good albuns. But, I insist, they are nothing compared to the high influence that Killing Tech, Dim Hatross and Nothingface caused to the history of heavy metal. I really don't see these last albuns being a huge influence in the future, sorry. Even Phobos is gold compared to the most recent work. So, they did very well interrupting this scheme. But, yes, it's just my opinion.
@StealthyBass Phobos was a bad attempt to keep the band going in the nineties. I never mentioned anything regarding the infuence of the "jasonic era" of the band. Can you please stay on topic? Do you not understand my original comment? My whole point of commenting in the first place was to say that going back to that nothingface sound, as much as we like it, goes against everything we know about the band. Voivod is about progression. This song is just pure rehash. I'm done here.
@creepychris11 Phobos is probably the best metal album of the 90s, albeit entirely different from, let's say Dimension Hatross or Nothingface - both of which I love equally. It's one of the heaviest and darkest albums out there with brilliant , raw songwriting and impossibly brutal production. It's ssad it's so misunderstood, considering its obvious influence on extreme music (examples: Celtic Frost - Monotheist, Satyricon - Now, Diabolical)
@93riven I don't think that I would enjoy your personal taste in music if that's how you feel about phobos hahahah! As far as the best "metal" album of the nineties... I could validly argue everything from kyuss to crowbar and don't forget the death metal exploson of the early nineties either. Where in holy hell do you get "monotheist" and "now diabolical"? Those albums were directly infuenced by the work that came before them. Phobos isn't misunderstood. It's a noble effort that falls short.
@creepychris11 you don't have to agree with me. the very fact that you listen to VOIVOD makes you a cool guy in my eyes, even if you're so deaf that you can't hear the genius of Phobos :) CHEERS.
@93riven Really? The ol' "hide the insult in the compliment " trick? Nice! I play guitar, drums, bass, and I sing (not growl, scream, or shout) as well. I may be many things but deaf CERTAINLY is not one of them! I've never been "cool" (yuck!) nor do I ever want to be. Please keep enjoying voivod. Good day to you sir.
@creepychris11 Concerning Jason... man, he is one of my main influences on bass and, undoubtedly, he can play all the Voivod stuff. The problem, again, was the concept. They all, not only Jason, wanted a straightforward sound, not a progressive one. And that's it! They interrupted their evolution on Nothingface and finally they are bringing that back. That's the reason by which Blacky is back and also why he called Dan.
This is great. This is what I've been waiting for. They need to get in the studio and record this and many other songs like this. NEW VOIVOD ALBUM!!!!!!!!
This creepychris guy sounds like he has the assburgers.

@creepychris11 You should say thank God since Blacky found a great guitarrist who actually CAN play like Piggy.
