I like bale as an actor, one of my favorites, but I thought his character was the only one that fell short in this movie. This is my favorite movie ever made, so I have watched it many times and have a different opinion, maybe, but I don't think bale fit well as Dylan.  For some reason it just didn't work.

Seriously i sat down and watched this movie last night, what the hell was going on. Bob dylan was portrayed by a black kid and also by richard gere in a time before bob dylan was alive as a 50 somehting hillbilly. And no one portraying bob dylan was called bob dylan??? I can get post modernism as a literary style, but this movie was jsut ridiculous in my view. Can anyone shed some insight into what the hell was going on

I think you have to look at the movie more as an artistic interpretation, than anything biographical. The purpose of having so many different characters, none of which are named Bob Dylan, is to emphasize the idea that Dylan was a man of extremes, and wasn't made up of one singular persona. He was some sort of collection of various characters. Basically all the characters WERE Bob Dylan, yet no one could define who 'Bob Dylan' actually was. I hope that helped.
