If you stop it at 2:27 you can juuust make out twin contrails. It looks like several planes flying away from you, not falling. They were probably traveling through a section of sky that had conditions that would produce contrails (low pressure and temperature). If there is high humidity and little wind, they can last a long time before dissipating.
Adam,I believe that what you were seeing was 3 different airplanes breaking out of their take off climb and heading into their respective flight path corridors.The sunset was amplifying the condensation trails, and since the airplanes were low in the horizon from the take off climb and heading away from you,the perspective looked like a vertical decent.Hence,the crashing UFO effect that you assumed you saw.As a former USAF flight crew, I've seen this illusion quite a few times.Love your channel!

I think it is a meteor- It looks just like one! It did seem somewhat slow in its movement, but was burning up in the cold MD air. There was a meteor shower on january 3rd or 4th, but dont believe it was as late as the 7th. Cool Video regardless!

Seen a couple of people say something about re-entry of space junk. I would have to disagree with this. You can clearly see where this object has exploded in mid-air. I'm not sure what exactly this video shows, but it's not a meteor. Also, the fact that this didn't make the news seems to rule out a meteor or space junk as well. That type of thing normally gets at least a short comment.
@JSMcustoms Space junk can explode in mid air. Phobos Grunt had tons of fuel to go to mars! When an object enters the atmosphere with that much fuel your going to get an explosion. No doubt. @foghaze I just did a little bit of checking on NASA's website and it seems that Phobos Grunt the day that this video was shot. Problems with the space probe's engines were not discovered until the day AFTER this video was recorded and is not expected to re-enter the atmosphere around the 15th of this month.

What you could be seeing is "near earth astroids" ever since the begining of time on earth the earths has been battered by tiny asteroids. Most burn up unnoticed in the atmosphere or hit the ocean. Those could be some and most likely are heading towards the ocean as objects in the sky often appear to be falling much much closer than they really are.
Could have been air to air dogfight pratice. Where they practice by shooting down drones. Looks like a destroyed plane comming to the ground. So im guessing theres open land over there/a military airfield or something simmilar.

I heard a Russian(or I think it was Russian) space probe was supposed to fall to earth. It could be that, but I dont remember any other information other than a space probe was supposed to fall to earth. Its the only non meteor explanation I could think of, that or a military test, but I doubt they'd be doing something like that so close to a populated area.

It was definitely a meteor breaking up. We see this quite a bit when there are clear skies in New Zealand. Also, Northern Hemisphere just passed through a major meteor shower a couple of days ago.
My guess is space debree. Tons of it floating around out there and if it hits somthing it will fall. There is no atmosfare in the outer part of the earth, so it carryes a lot of speed until it hits the atmosfare. And the dusk sun makes it glow extra red'ish.

I'm thinking a failed missile launch. It goes up the comes down which would give it that upside down V look. If so it most likely won't be something the news would be informed about. Adam, I am a pilot and it looks to be con-trails. I have seen con-trails do and look like some strange things. Hey you should see them from the air in the cock pit of my little Cessna :). Winds at different altitudes make them look like they are sitting still or moving like crazy. Side note of strange things I've seen in the pilot seat, a large cluster of helium balloons that was released that I flew by at 5000 feet. I looked like a WW2 Mustang pilot trying to avoid those things! :)
meteors don't leave a trail like that. Because of the time of day I'm going with contrails as said by mrmonkeyman50. Plane crash wouldn't have a contrail running to the ground like that.
At this point to me its a UFO or UCO (unidentified crashing object) to be more exact. But are aliens involved? I doubt it. If I had to guess I'd say it's a Meteor or a failed rocket launch.
I would guess Naval Air Station Patuxet may have had a Crash with the experimental aircraft. If it was an aircraft there would have been fighters scrambled to provide over watch. Wait for a press release from them on monday to see if they claim it. Or it could be a pocket of gas reflected off a weather balloon from Venus. I would go with option one.
Adam, things that look like they are falling are usually an illusion of something moving to the horizon. Looks to me like several contrails of a formation - and you do note you have military traffic in your area. The window glare helps to confuse things as well in the photo. I'm impressed with your rapid videography and being a good observer... but I don't think there's much here that's special. Happy 2012!
@mrmonkeyman50 , the strange thing is the part of the highway we were traveling more northeast as we started to travel north it did shift our perspective so it looked very close. Also the trail was consistent and was coming at an angle that did not appear it was moving away. I don't know, it was interesting though. Also Happy New Year to you as well!
@Equip2Endure You are a great distance away from a plane (especially one moving away from you) and so it's very difficult to "shift your perpsective" without extreme motion. Think of it in a similar manner to how close that mountain peak looks...and yet how long it takes to hike there! :o)

I am a corporate pilot. To me it looks like Con trails. Probably military jets starting in formation and then breaking off. Also they are going away from you and descending at the same time. It gives you the illusion of a falling object. Just my 2 cents. Keep up the good work on the videos.

I live in Northern VA, and on that day, the skies were filled with planes o.O con-trails all criss crossing each other, hell in the morning I saw about 20 all pretty close to each other it was just plain weird, and then at around 4-5 I was heading to the city of Winchester and saw about 8 planes all flying in a similar formation to what you saw, and they were close enough to actually see some of the planes well... Probably a piece of space junk or meteor breaking up in the upper atmosphere. I would send the video to MUFON, who seriously investigate things like this and have the information and contacts to find out what you saw.
That stream up top almost looks like a vapor trail. All I can say is that is a UFO, though we should probably say falling instead of flying, until someone can prove what it really is. I'm betting a anti-missile test drone or something as most missile defense systems are on the east coast.

There are a lot of meteors falling every day but most of the time they are too small to be seen or they fall into a inhabitated area or into the sea.

I heard a Russian(or I think it was Russian) space probe was supposed to fall to earth. It could be that, but I dont remember any other information other than a space probe was supposed to fall to earth. Its the only non meteor explanation I could think of, that or a military test, but I doubt they'd be doing something like that so close to a populated area.

@dtownknives Highly possible considering the direction and the time between spotting and impact. According to Wikipedia, parts are already breaking off and reentering when it brushes the outer atmosphere at orbital apogee. Here is a link with some details:

It was definitely a meteor breaking up. We see this quite a bit when there are clear skies in New Zealand. Also, Northern Hemisphere just passed through a major meteor shower a couple of days ago.

My guess is space debree. Tons of it floating around out there and if it hits somthing it will fall. There is no atmosfare in the outer part of the earth, so it carryes a lot of speed until it hits the atmosfare. And the dusk sun makes it glow extra red'ish.

I'm thinking a failed missile launch. It goes up the comes down which would give it that upside down V look. If so it most likely won't be something the news would be informed about. Probably a new middle test or something like that. Reminds me of that obvious missile launch off the coast of California some time back.

Adam, I am a pilot and it looks to be con-trails. I have seen con-trails do and look like some strange things. Hey you should see them from the air in the cock pit of my little Cessna :). Winds at different altitudes make them look like they are sitting still or moving like crazy. Side note of strange things I've seen in the pilot seat, a large cluster of helium balloons that was released that I flew by at 5000 feet. I looked like a WW2 Mustang pilot trying to avoid those things! :)

meteors don't leave a trail like that. Because of the time of day I'm going with contrails as said by mrmonkeyman50. Plane crash wouldn't have a contrail running to the ground like that.

At this point to me its a UFO or UCO (unidentified crashing object) to be more exact. But are aliens involved? I doubt it. If I had to guess I'd say it's a Meteor or a failed rocket launch.

I would guess Naval Air Station Patuxet may have had a Crash with the experimental aircraft. If it was an aircraft there would have been fighters scrambled to provide over watch. Wait for a press release from them on monday to see if they claim it. Or it could be a pocket of gas reflected off a weather balloon from Venus. I would go with option one.

Adam, things that look like they are falling are usually an illusion of something moving to the horizon. Looks to me like several contrails of a formation - and you do note you have military traffic in your area. The window glare helps to confuse things as well in the photo. I'm impressed with your rapid videography and being a good observer... but I don't think there's much here that's special. Happy 2012!

@mrmonkeyman50 , the strange thing is the part of the highway we were traveling more northeast as we started to travel north it did shift our perspective so it looked very close. Also the trail was consistent and was coming at an angle that did not appear it was moving away. I don't know, it was interesting though. Also Happy New Year to you as well!

@Equip2Endure You are a great distance away from a plane (especially one moving away from you) and so it's very difficult to "shift your perpsective" without extreme motion. Think of it in a similar manner to how close that mountain peak looks...and yet how long it takes to hike there! :o)

I am a corporate pilot. To me it looks like Con trails. Probably military jets starting in formation and then breaking off. Also they are going away from you and descending at the same time. It gives you the illusion of a falling object. Just my 2 cents. Keep up the good work on the videos.

My hypothesis is its a satellite breaking up coming into re-entry.
Would explain why some bits of the object is faster at falling and some are slower ... due to the weight or shape of the different parts.

You know... I live in Northern VA, and on that day, the skies were filled with planes o.O con-trails all criss crossing each other, hell in the morning I saw about 20 all pretty close to each other it was just plain weird, and then at around 4-5 I was heading to the city of Winchester and saw about 8 planes all flying in a similar formation to what you saw, and they were close enough to actually see some of the planes well... I couldn't see the planes in the formation you have, but the planes

Probably a piece of space junk or meteor breaking up in the upper atmosphere. I would send the video to MUFON, who seriously investigate things like this and have the information and contacts to find out what you saw.

That stream up top almost looks like a vapor trail. All I can say is that is a UFO, though we should probably say falling instead of flying, until someone can prove what it really is. I'm betting a anti-missile test drone or something as most missile defense systems are on the east coast.
