Of all the people interviewed, Heinz F. broke my heart. It was so gut-wrenching to watch him break down in tears over what he went through not only during his time in the camps but afterwards as well when he had no one to confide in. Watching the film, I wanted to reach out and embrace him until the tears stopped. I've tried to find information about him and from what I understand he passed shortly after the film was released. I hope he was able to find some modicum of peace before he passed...
were safe. no one enforces those anti gay laws here... right? WRONG, did you know that TODAY over 1/2 the states businesses in the USA can legally refuse service to gays? this is why the religious right wing nutjobs fight so hard to destroy our rights, power base, dignity etc... dont feel to "safe", this could happen here, people hate, easier than love. NEVER forget Nazi germany, kids should learn from it in schools, GAY HISTORY SHOULD BE TAUGHT IN SCHOOLS!
@HowBrownPhiladelphia hehehe trololololololololol, so we should stop teaching about alexander the great, shakespear, bessie ross, and julius caesar? hehehe your an ignorant one
@TambriaMoore very kind words.. there is a short video on him here on youtube. I'd put the link here but youtube doesn't seem to let me do that. But if you search for his name, you'll find it.
@AtheisticChristian also happening in Iraq, & africa (Uganda). maybe if they found someone they love who happens to be gay they will stop killing them. We only change, when at the prescipus.
@DCLsMusic You're very welcome and thank you for watching. Just in case you might be okay with hearing it (instead of watching it) here's a link where you can listen to it anytime you desire: snipurl (dot) com/gtrr175
I watched this movie and it move me... I cried a lot of times and the movie is so emotional, that sometimes I could think that I have some sort of time machine and
@ArchdonDuke Glad you got to see the movie. I wish all people could see it. Maybe a better use of your time machine would be to grab Hitler (perhaps when he was younger?) and take him to a different time where he would be powerless and/or grow up with a different perspective on life.
@gunnarmarine What? Is that a joke? Seriously watch this film, see what horrors some of these people went through, and then see if you think that's funny.
@gunnarmarine I know it was a joke, that was a rhetorical question. I just thought using the word "gay" as a light hearted insult is inappropriate in reference to a film that features some poor bloke crying for being tortured because of his sexuality.
I bought the documentary on amazon and just watched it. It was very intense and well made. The memories of the survivors made me tear up several times. It is hard to understand that in the new German democracy, homosexuals were still legally arrested for being what they are. From this background you come to understand why most of those memories got lost in the common historical conscience. How should people tell their stories, their pain when there was still the thread of prison etc. A must-see!
@SmartAndy That is awesome you got to see it. I've watched it several times myself and it still makes me tear up every time. In the article I link to in the info area of this clip there are a lot of research links. Some the links expose facts that enrage me (and I would think most people). Facts like how all the holocaust survivors received reparations (compensation) except for the homosexuals and that all other holocaust survivors were set free except the homosexuals who were placed in prison.
@SmartAndy I'll probably be re-airing the show on my Internet Radio station (Gay Talk Radio) in the near future. I re-broadcast the show at least once a year. If you would be interested in being a guest on the show I'd love to talk to you about that.
@tomcwa I already added your broadcast to my browsers favorites but stopped after the first 20 min cause I didn't want to be distracted from my thesis! ;-) I would love to be a guest on your show. Just tell me when you want to do it.
I have to correct the infobox: Hitler did not resurrect the Paragraph 175. When the German countries were united to the "Kaiserreich" in 1871, homosexuality became illegal, also in those countries who had legalized it before.
@SmartAndy Read comment below first: After WW I the criminal law-commission of the German parliament decided 1929 to discuss the legalization of homosexuality in the parliament but then the Nazi took power and the Paragraph was not deleted yet. Hitler then exacerbated the Paragraph and intensified the persecution and homosexuals were not only send to prison, as before, but had to fear concentration camps
@SmartAndy The movie documents the fact Paragraph 175 was 'on the books' BUT it was not being enforced. As the movie further shows Berlin was practically a 'gay haven of fun and frolly' before Hitler came into power. Hitler also revised Paragragh 175 to strengthen it (and make it more brutal) after he came into power. Also common sense tells us, if Paragragh 175 was being enforced prior to Hitler coming to power then there would have been no homosexuals to 'round up'!
@tomcwa well, there were convictions before but not that many as in the third Reich cause Hitler installed a special "Reichszentrale" a central organisation, against homosexuality and abortion, to systemize the persecution. Before Hitler took power, deputies also discussed to enlarge the § to female homosexuality but it was abjected.
@SmartAndy Thanks for the additional information. I hope you get a chance to see the movie. If you don't, be sure and check out the link I have in the infobox. Because in that link, I have another link where you can hear the entire audio track of the movie.
@SmartAndy Sorry for my rash initial response. It wasn't until I read your second comment that I realized you weren't trying to 'attack anyone'. So I apologize for being a bit 'sensitive'.
