Horrible singing and performance. I just can understand few words because she is singing this aria like a verismo piece. Screaming and screaming...Elettra it isn't an histeric woman. and the most difficult technical aspect of this aria comes whit the staccatti at 2' 43" an the repetion (when she, easily sustitute the staccato notes with a scream, a tuned scream...I prefer the Sylvia Sass version.
It seems this video is no place to mention Netrebko, and rightfully so, AP wouldn't be very happy about this either. So let's leave AN behind, at least here, she's not really worth so much mention. AP is a marvellous interpreter and should be judged in her own terms. Personally, I'm totally captivated by AP, I hope she does more belcanto, for the time being she seems to devote all her energies to baroque. She is great in that & gives a new dimension, but IMO belcanto will show her full potential
Some of us look for polish, some for high drama and stirring emotion. IMHO, in terms of dramatic force Pendatchanska wins hands down. I certainly hope AP does not aspire to become a Netrebko, I don't think she can be considered the benchmark for today's opera. Being a best seller doesn't make one a role model.
@Donizettimaniac If you look through her discography, you`ll find that only four-five tops are not certified as 'dramatic coloratura' roles (but lyric coloratura+Donna Elvira). Actually, she hasn`t recorded that much through the years and in the past few years there weren`t many performances of hers. I think it`s because she has two daughters. All that said, to me Pendatchanska can never ever become a Netrebko. She knows what she`s singing. She knows her fach.
Only if she'd not glue herself to the score here like that...cf Netrebko who sang this without a score and 'acting' out the aria...Netrebko not even has Pend's voice!
But the two artists' difference is obvious - Netrebko is so much MORE POLISHED in every respects!
Pendatchanska has all the goodies to be at least as good as Netrebko, only if she'd try....
@Cissy97 Netrebko is beautiful, and as far as I am concerned, the buck stops there. A voice? Gimme a break. I still cannot figure out who she seduced to get on stage. NO FAN OF NETREBKO!
OMG She is so incredibly involved! And the orchestra too! Bravaaaa! Braviiii! I hope she expands her recorded repertoire. Especially on DVD, she seems to have great acting gifts.

i love pendatchanska since i have seen her queen elisabeth in roberto devereux. But this interpretation of elettra is far from ideal imho - unpleasant vibrato, out of pitch...
@gman20101 Who cares about vibrato when this is so effective, conveying the message, involving the listener. I prefer this so much more to sterile soulless singers.
Great talent but she makes no justice as to Mozart's style. Why did she change the line at 2:49 ? That's not what Mozart wrote. I believe she is shouting what should be a more sublte cry of desperation with a more elegant tone. I like it though.
OMG I have made a discovery tonight with this woman. I felt Vaness sang it best vocally and Behrens acting was best, but this woman has it all! So fiery! Love the voice!
If you ask me, she`s one of those who are able to demand being 'the new Callas' - I`ve listened almost any rendition of hers that I could find and put simply - there seems to be nothing this woman can`t sing magnificently. I keep comparing her to D.Damrau for that quality, but Pendatchanska seems to be even better (to me that`s a huge compliment as I love Damrau) - just check out her 'Pale et blonde' or her Lucia and Damrau`s.
P.S. Yes, yes, on YouTube is available also her 'O zittre nicht' :D
@primohomme I don`t think Callas was sfogato, as it is never certain if she ever had F6 (A.P. has). But sfogato is either: 1) a soprano who can sing above F6 with great ease and has a light voice (so, neither Pendatchanska, nor Callas fit) or 2) a contralto/ mezzo who can sing above E/F6 in alt (not falsetto) (might be Callas, who to many was rather mezzo-ish). Many singers are the first, but I don`t think it`s enough to hit Gs, As, Bs etc to be certified sfogato... I`m open to corrections :)
Well, there's a big confussion about soprano sfogato and soprano acuto sfogato
A soprano acuto sfogato is a light very high voice that can go above F6 with ease, usually small and light voices such as Erna Sack, Mado Robin, Beverly Hoch, Ingeborg Hallstein, etc.
On the other hand a soprano sfogato as the term was used in the 19th century refers to a voice based on the mezzo-soprano or contralto voice that can also sing high soprano tessitura, usually with a range at least G3-D6, with both extremes of the range equally well supported and strong. Very rare voice, Maria Callas was the greatest of that voice type in the 20th century, others such as Leyla Gencer, Adelaide Negri, Marisa Galvany had the instrument but not the technique.
Also there are specific roles written for a soprano sfogato voice, such as Norma, Armida, Anna Bolena, Lady Macbeth, etc etc etc...they require a diva capable of singing coloratura up to high C over and over but also sing powerful chesty low phrases. Maria's range was F#3-F6 and she sang pretty much every female vocal fach, here's a video I made showing her different voices and timbres:
Wow! That was great! I really like her lower range, but her vibrato kind of drives me up a wall. Is she young? Maybe her voice just needs to reach its prime before she sounds superior, but for now its still awesome =]
Very strong interpretation, unbelievable performance and that in a concert hall, i sannot even imagine what it will be on the stage! She is pure fire!
Wow, the video captures her voice in a more ample, resounding way that makes her wide vibrato sound more organic with the rest of the voice (sometimes the recordings emphasize it too much), and her dark, dramatic and very peculiar timbre sounds more beautiful than ever. She's a great soprano and must have very strong vocal chords, because she's singing heavy roles since her early 20's and still sings amazingly.
Pendantchanska is clearly the best! Lightyears from the others.
Lucky me - I was sitting on the 3-rd row at that concert in Paris..
