  • I loved this song when it came out, and I still love it today! :D

  • heard it first time at Gilley's back in '86 one of the best party songs there is :)

  • @TheMKEWERBY Maybe you ain't manly enough to drink Jose Cuervo

  • first heard this on a jukebox at Maggie Maes in Sparkle City back in '95. I've loved it ever since.

  • 13 rounds with uncle Jose... it was a sad pathetic knockout in the 14th round. Damn Jose is a heavyweight lol

  • I always liked Shelly and especially this song. She has a husky voice, but I don't think she sounds like a man at all. What kinda guys are you people running around with?

  • me and Jose Cuervo!!! i woke up in another country!!! true story my friends!!!...Chris aka Pineapple

  • Two buddies & me drank a bottle of almond flavored tequila from Mexico once, none of us remembered driving home. The next day a gal called and said "Do you remember peeing in that birdbath in front of that restaurant last night?"

  • holy shit

  • whats funny is this song was playing the first time my step mom got me drunk

  • gotta love good ol' jose....just not with salt and lime...lol

  • Thumbs Up if you're not a 12 year old, so, you already knew the song... and knew the singer was female.

  • @himontyOKC i'm thirteen. heard this song when i was 11 and loved it!!! Already knew it was a girl back then

  • @GIRloverofCA that's awesome. some jerk on here said she sounded like a guy... made me violent. i listened to this song all the time as a little kid. i don't really like country a lot today, but, the old stuff is still awesome.

  • Classic Drinking Song!!

  • my first thought the morning after, holy s@*t

  • Way Way War ahead of her time... wish I had just ONE date!!!

  • sounds like a dude... just saying but i love this song...

  • Tinner = Tenor and is more alto than anything.

  • We used to get a big tray full of tequila shots, play this song, and when the chorus played, we would shout, "CHORUS....DRINK!!!" By the end of the song you have taken four pretty rapid-fire drinks. LOL

  • Twenty years : too long since I've heard this one!

  • Danced to this song many a time - great dance tune !

  • Shelly West is a great singer, although she doesn't sound like her famous mother (the late Dottie West). She does look like her mother, though!

    Bravo, Shelly!

  • I just wished I'd been the cowboy she woke up with.

  • I Love it.....

  • I hear this song and it reminds me of spending friday through sunday hammered at the Enlisted Club on Okinawa back when I was a young Marine. This was a song you were guaranteed to hear... along with Brad Paisley's fishing song.

  • My mom loves this song so much that she has a headache and she is still singing this song.

  • Women's Lib Hell.... Redneck women were independant long before Gloria Stienham !

  • Omg I love this song. It has been a long time since I have heard it. Two thumbs up Shelly West

  • man it sounds like a dude

  • Sing this for my wife all the time and Tequila makes her clothes off. Love Ya Honey.

  • Her rareing are so good what can you say,She pretty had it all for the songs she did

  • @TheLongshot11 her what are so good??? she had all of what for the songs she did??? your comment makes no sense. are you five years old or something?

  • Her rateing is so good ,what can you said but a dam good singer. and pretty

  • She doesn't even sound like a man?

  • @FunndStunt this is true.

  • WHAT??? THATS NOT A GUY??????

    I thought it was, too

  • @TRACYBYRDFAN97 i knew it was a girl, back when this music came out, you didnt just anounce that your gay, youd get your ass kicked. so when she said that she woke up next to a guy, i knew it was a woman singing the song

  • @TRACYBYRDFAN97 You are such a Dumbass.. Stupid people like you ! and they wonder whats wrong with the world we live in....Duh !!

  • this song is from back when counrty music was music

  • This song came to mind and just had to look it up, So glad you posted It- It was so one of our songs back when my husband and I were younger (not yet married) and a pair of barflies!!!!!!

  • I love this song, and a lot church people do to for the fine music

  • wow... this is so old! and so true...lol

  • 17 SHOTS ONE NIGHT MADE ME AND JOSE PART TO BE FRIENDS NO MORE....BUT I STILL LOVE CANCUN

  • correction, it was 1983, not 1982, but still a little early for a man to be singing about getting drunk, "kissing all the cowboys" etc...lol..lol

  • lol to all of the people thinking it was a man that sang this song. It was a radio hit in like 1982!! The United States isn't ready now for a mainstream song about kissing men and waking up in a strange man's bed to be sung by a man. It would have been the biggest uproar EVER then.

  • @keithblabbermouth

Be glad it was your mom.

  • This song had me wanting to drink tequila as a kid. Now I know Jose isn't very good but still this song makes me sing everytime.

  • i boned a gurl to this song

  • Who else here is drunk on Jose Cuervo and went on Youtube?!

  • @dougd1015 Me !

  • @amiable519 , how bout an indian , lol

  • @amiable519 lol no that is her voice.... I always thought it was a man too! ...... She really did have to much jose...lol

  • @Surirygirl umm..how can that be, digital remastering, or what!?

  • @amiable519 No she just had a really deep voice

  • Respond to this video... i dont want cowboy layin next to me

    -+

  • used to live by this song daily, religeously!!! When this song came out I was a kid, I grew up singing it and did not even know what tequila was. Down here in south louisiana we can it "to kill ya!" lol =D I grew up and found out what it was I was singing about and WOW!!! I LOVED IT!!! AND STILL DO on occasion. ;)

  • I love this song but until like yesterday I thought a guy sang this.

  • @neonblack103 Me too lol

  • like it love it

  • I will admit when i first heard this song I thought it was a guy singing. but the lyrics made me think otherwise. She looks just like her mama Dottie! Beautiful!

  • she is was to beautiful to be a guy and i am sureallan would disagree with yoiut

  • her voice is deep but the lyrics tell a different story back when this song came out being gay wasnt the in thing to do

  • Why the hell would any body think, that's a Guy??? Damn, She always sounded great, & I wasn't too crazy about Tequila but I Sure liked that Canadian Club, though!!

  • @rzrbkgrl Hell yea.

  • THERE ARE SOME WEIRD PEOPLE WHO THINK SHELLY WEST IS A GUY.

MAYBE THEY DON'T KNOW WHAT THEY ARE.

  • @74XLR Have you ever saw a guy that did know what he was ?? lol

  • How many of us have there and done that....this song brings back some old memories...winks

  • In my humblest of opinions, Jose Cuervo is a friend to no one.

  • This is Dottie West's daughter. She did this after her Mom lost everything.

  • @SunshineLady904 No this was 1982 or 3 Dottie's career was still going good. Dottie lost everything in 1990. Shelly recorded this after her duets with David Frizzell

  • This song used to make me SOO much in tip$ - the DJ quickly learned to slip out a "secret" catchphrase to give us enough time to whisper to our deep pocketed customers that the Jose Cuervo song was coming up, giving us enough time to rush the bartender with orders for enough shots to fill our serving trays to capacity. Thanks Shelly West!

  • Up till 2005 I thought it was a guy singing this song

  • @RedneckTexasGirl I thought it was a guy for a long time.

  • The Daughter of the great Dottie west.

  • Thumbs up if you listened to this and your first thought was;

"Holy shit this is a chick!?!?"

  • @cashin1243 , this comment should have the most thumbs up!

  • @cashin1243 LOL....yup, she has a strong TINNER voice! (spelling?)

  • @philmeinya1

I suspect the spelling you're looking for is "tenor".

  • @cashin1243 For years i thought it was a guy until i examined the lyrics more in depth and decided that if it was a guy, he was gay if he was sleeping next to a cowboy. Than i saw an old video called midnight special and she ssng this on there. And yes she was hot!

  • @cashin1243 lmao. That was exactly what I was thinking, then I scrolled down and saw your post. LOL.

  • @cashin1243 good thing it is a chick, a dude would be awfully gay to kiss all the cowboys among everything else

  • Hell yeah! Lived this song in my younger days!

  • thought a dude sang this a gay dude

  • I used to date a guy that tried to sing this song almost ruined the song for me lol

  • selly West was in out town some time ago , in my drinking daye we had a few she is great

  • im drunk!

  • Just a great song let it go at that

  • Shelley is a hell of a base player. She used to slide it into a rig on her belt when she was workin with Allen and David in the San Juaquin valley. The Mirror room Lounge. Jeannete Frizzell was running the bar at the time. She can also rock the song, Back in the USSR. I wish she would re ignite her career. After all, her momma is a legend.

  • This was my life when i was young.

Brings back such great memories to his old Cowgirl. Montana Ranch girl would party at the local Honky Tonk on Saturday,go to church on Sunday then back in the saddle on

    monday

  • This was my life when i was young.

Brings back such great memories to his old Cowgirl

  • Great song. This gal has a really unique alto and I find it kinda interesting. I grew up in Tennessee and I remember this song super well.

  • Beautiful just like her mother.

  • yea i wondered y a guy wld be kissing all the cowboys and dancin on the bar...lol

  • love this song

  • i was 4 years old when this song came , loved it then and love it now

  • I always liked the mariachi horns on this tune.

Sad that most c&w folks are such rednecks now about Mexicans. Rednecks love Mexico's tequila but seem to hate the Mexicans who come north. Yeah, I guess I'd be mad too, since they make us gringos look so damn lazy. Mexico is much more than just tequila, wake up folks! Viva Mexico!!!

  • @HunterMann

The USA acquired a substantial amount of territory from Mexico. Also, several Spanish words made their way into the English language. (Can you say "pronto" , "vamoose", or "mustang"? Those are but three examples of Spanish-influenced English words. )

  • @HunterMann Mexico has sent alot of people here to the U.S. to work, because it has a failed economy, but yes, it also has ALOT to offer. Compare Mexico to our South with Canada to our North...Canada is absolutely the most 'PLAIN VANILLA" country to exist! Have you ever seen a 'Canadian Restaurant' here? Mexican rests. are my favorite. Mexico is famous for its food, tequila, culture, friendliness, and pretty senoritas, haha.among other things....When was the last time you saw Canada on the news? 1971?

  • I love this song

  • cicled>>> I know what you mean. I grew up in the 70's and assumed it was man singing this song for about 2 years. Then my dad told me it was a woman singing this song. I've loved loud women every since.

  • for a long time when i was little i didnt know it was a woman lol i didnt understand the song at like 5 so i didnt get the wakening up with a cowboy

  • I was the guy who was married to the Green eyed Blond in San Antonio. What I did not get to type was that Shelly P was the exact spitting image of Shelly West. I was married to a perfect image of a woman and her best friend was exactly like Shelly West. What more could a guy wish for in this life?

  • Man after last night i couldnt get this song out of my head..

  • I think singing this song as a kid is what set me up for the tequila-loving woman I am today. Well, that and tequila tasting like glorious, rusty, sin.

  • @almatric u and me both honey!!! i also like to blame it on its on my blood being mexican lol

  • @almatric bring out the salt and limes, but i like patron silver better.

  • Love this song always loved Shelly West and when she sang with David Frizzell

  • This slut sounds like a fucking GUY.

  • @fuckyousonsofbitches Her deep voice is rather confusing, but there's no need to call her a slut.

  • @fuckyousonsofbitches Your life must really suck. Enjoy it and we will enjoy the great music.

  • @fuckyousonsofbitches

Nice comment from a Taylor Swift Lovin' know nothing punk!

  • @fuckyousonsofbitches true that brotha

  • First, this song was pretty racy for a female singer at the time it came out...it was the good ole' boys who were supposed to be sleeping in the wrong beds, waking up not knowing where the hell they were :-), Second, people forget how absolutely hot Shelly West was in those days, big sort of brassy redhead, such a doll...and last, rum is surprisingly good with diet Pepsi...:-)

  • @gurlsingerfan her mom sang with kenny rogers a few times

  • @gurlsingerfan Great comment but when you mentioned Rum, I was just wondering if you meant Tequila because that is what Jose Cuervo is known for making. Let me know if I am wrong. Man this song brings back some kick ass memories of the early 80's give or take some time! Awesome song!

  • @survivrs No, I meant rum, because that is what I happened to be sipping when I wrote the comment....and it was working quite nicely thank you...:-)...ah yes, the early 80's...Shelly West, young Linda Ronstadt, Tanya Tucker, young Emmylou Harris, on the rock side, Pat Benatar, Stevie Nicks and Fleetwood Mac....everybody was young, horny and pretty....ya' had to love it...:-)

  • @gurlsingerfan hahahaha!!! I love your reply!!!!! :)

  • @gurlsingerfan Rum is great, love the Havana Club 7 year old. The best rum comes from Cuba. The cigars aren't bad either. This song takes me back to my senior year in 1982. Great tune.

  • Reminds me of my ex Linda.. We Had alot of fun just too uch fought against us from the start

  • This song reminds me of being married to one of the most beautiful Blonde green eyed women who ever lived. We had a friend whose name was in fact Shelly P. . We lived in San Antonio Texas. When God made Shelly P. he took the rest of the month off on vacation. When he finished her, he looked and said " that's the best I can do, so I am taking some time off. Shelly P. with her red hair and Emerald green eyes would get up on a table and dance when " Jose Cuervo" would start playing. Still a memory

  • A SURELY VOICE OF HER OWN AND ALWAYS GIVES LIFE TO ALL WHO LISTEN..SOME OF THE SAME QUALITIES OF HER MOM BUT ENOUGH DUFFERENCE TO MAKE HEER A STYLIST OF HER OWN

  • @2wingo

"In many baby name books, Shelley is listed as meaning "From the meadow on the ledge" or "clearing on a bank". It is Old English in origin. As with many other names (Ashley, Courtney, etc), Shelley is today a name given almost exclusively to girls after historically being male." - Wikipedia

  • Barcardi Gold baby! Nothin' like a little Puerto Rican rum to kill your liver to.

  • I just gotta ask...who the hell are you people listening to that you think it sounds like a guy? More than that i bet yer all fans of Wynona and Gretchen Wilson and Patti Loveless, all great singers mind you, but there is some gender identification problems with some ot their work....i m just sayin!

and oh hell yeah...ms Shelly West is smokin hot!

  • @bribos99 Honestly, I thought I could tell the difference, but I really thought it was a guy. Its not thats its bad...but her voice is low

  • @booknerd95 When I first heard the song I had to do a double take

  • @booknerd95

Don't feel too bad. I thought it was a guy singing too. What complicates matters is that the name Shelly can be given to either gender. So until I saw her photo on the cover of the album, I was completely fooled.

  • @AVelvetRevolution Since when can Shelly be a boy's name?

  • @2wingo Shelly Mann the Jazz drummer for one.

  • @2wingo

In the case of males, it can be a diminutive for any name in which "Shel-" is a component. One example: Members of Dr. Hook often called Shel Silverstein "Shelly". Also, "Shelly" can be a diminutuve for "Shelton" or "Sheldon". (There may be other examples that I've overlooked. )

  • @A1l2l2e2n4 Interesting.

  • @booknerd95 LOL, I too thought it was a guy singing when I first heard the song.

  • @booknerd95 yeah, i know how ya feel, i always thought it was a male singer, and my mom tried to tell me it was a woman, then i realized it when she said listen to the lyrics, lol

  • @booknerd95 for years i loved this song but never knew who sang it than you tube came out and i saw it was a woman, I guess i was like you I assume it was a man cause of the type of song it was my bad.

  • hey dont cut down classic country i was raised on it

  • a woman??? don't think soo musta smoked a lot of cigarettes!

  • a woman??? don't think soo

  • great song love Jose Cuervo but everytime I drink it Idon't remember a thing!! LOL

  • She is very pretty but her voice doesn't have the depth or range of Dottie's. The Mom was a real superstar entertainer. She grabbed country music by the tail, all alone, and didn't let go till she whipped it's azz.

  • I saw them at a small C&W bar on Long Island NY , back in the mid 80's, let me tell ya fellas, She is HOT!

  • for all of you who think shelly sounds like a man or homo i think should reconsider what they are drinking. i saw her on larrys country diner on RFDTV friday i wouldent mine wakeing up next to her. shes HOT. not only that she sings as good if not better than her mom dottie.

  • @DixielandBaker I saw her on that show and I wondered, "Man, why the heck didn't you do something better with your hair!?" She knew she was going to be on TV! I just couldn't believe it:(

  • @DixielandBaker Fuckin' A.

  • thats a woman singing?

  • love this song always thought she was a man with a girls name

  • I wasn't born yet, when this was first released, but DAMN I love it!
