First, this song was pretty racy for a female singer at the time it came out...it was the good ole' boys who were supposed to be sleeping in the wrong beds, waking up not knowing where the hell they were :-), Second, people forget how absolutely hot Shelly West was in those days, big sort of brassy redhead, such a doll...and last, rum is surprisingly good with diet Pepsi...:-)

@gurlsingerfan Great comment but when you mentioned Rum, I was just wondering if you meant Tequila because that is what Jose Cuervo is known for making. Let me know if I am wrong. Man this song brings back some kick ass memories of the early 80's give or take some time! Awesome song!

@gurlsingerfan Rum is great, love the Havana Club 7 year old. The best rum comes from Cuba. The cigars aren't bad either. This song takes me back to my senior year in 1982. Great tune.

This song reminds me of being married to one of the most beautiful Blonde green eyed women who ever lived. We had a friend whose name was in fact Shelly P. . We lived in San Antonio Texas. When God made Shelly P. he took the rest of the month off on vacation. When he finished her, he looked and said " that's the best I can do, so I am taking some time off. Shelly P. with her red hair and Emerald green eyes would get up on a table and dance when " Jose Cuervo" would start playing. Still a memory

Don't feel too bad. I thought it was a guy singing too. What complicates matters is that the name Shelly can be given to either gender. So until I saw her photo on the cover of the album, I was completely fooled.

In the case of males, it can be a diminutive for any name in which "Shel-" is a component. One example: Members of Dr. Hook often called Shel Silverstein "Shelly". Also, "Shelly" can be a diminutuve for "Shelton" or "Sheldon". (There may be other examples that I've overlooked. )

She is very pretty but her voice doesn't have the depth or range of Dottie's. The Mom was a real superstar entertainer. She grabbed country music by the tail, all alone, and didn't let go till she whipped it's azz.
