What bothers me about this dance scene: it's supposed to be a dance of seduction. This isn't seductive at all. Personally, I blame the choreographer. The only remotely sensual aspect of it is the removal of the veils. Yes, it's a part of an opera, & it's a 36-yr-old woman attempting to play a 16-yr-old girl, & the cast of characters are all bat-s*&# crazy, but true sensuality hasn't changed much in the past 1000 years. This is some wacky '70s choreographer's acid-trip version of allure.
Dear Ravel: Sorry for the misspelling of Ms. Stratas' name. I appreciate your pointing out the error and will refrain from making the mistake again. I still, however, simply adore the music and the fabulous voice of Ms. Stratas.....she is sensational and I have ordered this dvd to go with the Birgit Nielsson version. Again, thank you.
An amazing performance....love the music and, of course, T. Stratus is just incomparable as Salome....the overall performance is chilling in its depiction of human degradation and psycho-sexual energy totally out-of-control.
I like how they made Astrid Varnay's Herodias really "butch" and man-like. She really does look like a fat ugly man! She is bald and overweight. At this time in the 70's, Varnay was past her prime. This was Karl Bohm's way of emphasizing that Herod is not attracted to her anymore and to distinguish her from the more beautiful, seductive and sensually feminine Salome of Teresa Stratas. She broke new ground. Nilsson & Caballe sang better but were overweight women who weren't "sexy"
In what way can this not be macabre?! This is the story of an adolescent girl dancing to arouse her perverted stepfather, so that she can obtain the object of her sexual desire, the severed head of John the Baptist. Is that sexy to you all? The music, by the way, is not "pretty"; it is from Richard Strauss' eponymous opera, one of the 20th century's greatest masterpieces.
Do you twitts even know what it is you are looking at???
This is not belly dancing!
This is not a $5 lap dance!
This is part of an OPERA!!!!!
This is a 36 yrs old OPERA singer playing the role of a 16 yr old CRAZY girl who in the next scene will make out with the severed head of John the Baptist!
Yes it's crazy, yes it's macabre. IT"S SUPPOSED TO BE THAT WAY!!!
Look at the eyes of Herodias when watching her daughter dance that way: She doesn't know how to react. She is almost ashamed but nevertheless she knows about the intension....
Don't insert comment if you don't know what you are talking about. She IS crazy! Read up on the story, Oscar Wilde's play, NOT the biblical Salomé. Wilde changed it around.
I think this is the best dance I've seen of this. I saw the whole movie when it came out. She was astounding!n Thanks for the post. Great to see her again!
Well it looks as though there were no structured dance schools for harem princesses back then.

@cantanteporsiempre That's Astrid Varnay. Look for clips on YouTube of her as Klytamnestra in Strauss's Elektra with Leonie Rysanek.

@15platinum it is highly distasteful to put bellydance and lap dance in the same category.
AnesthesiaMaibaum 8 months ago
@15platinum Hmmm.....I'm hoping that you haven't intentionally lumped belly dancing in with 5$ lap dances. They are in no way related...

This does not strike me as being erotic. It looks like she's trying to get possessed by something. LMAO

Anyone who wants to see what 'Dance of the 7 veils' is suppose to be like---check out "Rimarah Hare - Dance of The 7 Veils".
Although, it isn't a theatical production, it gives those an idea of what and how the 'art of seduction' is suppose to be like.

Wtf! OMGLOL! This is a suck crap!
This is far the worst interpretation of '7 veils' I've ever seen!
Not only is this woman unattractive, and down right gross to look at...I agree she look 'undead'!
This isn't suppose to be 'macabre' for God sakes!
This is suppose to be about seduction!
Where the fuck is the 'seductive belly dancing'?!
Damn! I think I am going to get sick...
