  • Awesome vid

  • Wow that's crazy. I've never snowmobiled much but I would think being caught in a avalanche is much better on a sled than skis. I've had small slides on skis and it feels like water as the ground falls out from under you you lose the ability to control. I figure since a sled and run over water you could power down it and off to the side.

  • Great presence of mind! You are obviously an experienced rider hitting some backcountry. Nice vid.

  • that was intense something similar happened to me in colorada

  • ride the wave ;D

  • Awesome clip, glad you survived.

  • fuck you have balls

  • That avalanche would have looked more like a land slide if I had been on it.

  • i bet you where shaking after that

  • Good video looks like fun

  • he was like , wow i gotta drive real quick ! out of here

  • Shizamm

  • lucky

  • Someone said... it was completely unpredictable and could have happened to anyone...

WRONG>>> Avalanches are predictable... even though difficult to be certain Ill bet you that several clues were there...

But that being said... I have analyzed a 5-6" deep instability many many times and still chosen to ride certain slopes... its the wrong slope... or the deeper hard slab I worry about...

  • that was so so so scary aha!

  • thats crazy

  • Awesome man!!

  • Hey..that was tight man!..Glad you rode that shit out..INTENCE

  • kasnerc, ur a fuckin pussy and a nerd dude ahha.u sound like a fuckin geek.y not just take a chance and have fun like all sledders do.shit happens get used to it!

  • id feel sooooo good after being able to beat an avalanche

  • did you use a go pro cam?

  • @minimotardking V.I.O. POV 1.0

  • props for keeping your cool and getting out of that!

  • I'm suprised he didnt shit himself

  • @xXClalviNXx what would that acomplish? Stay calm and think to survive

  • @degoetz most people dont get out of them

  • @xXClalviNXx he did

  • what kind of skidoo was that

  • @brandon18402 2008 modified XP 800 Ski Doo

  • im not gonna lie that looked a little sketchy lol

  • Why would anyone one do that on purpose?

  • @degoetz To be cool. Perhaps he knew he'd only be causing a small avalanche that wouldn't get him.

  • @uppitynigga It was me and i have done that in that area for probably as long as you have been alive and that has never happened there before that i have seen.

  • you did that on purpose, huh?

  • Dude! I couldn't tell if you were using the throttle or not while you were in the middle of the avalanche, hopefully you were. If i were EVER in that type of situation, i would've HAULED SOME SERIOUS ASS down!

  • @JLDG4 Big mistake, only go as fast as you need to to stay on top and look for the best way out not straight down the fall line.

  • cool footage... scarey

  • wow looks like it turns to water

  • EPIC man ! epic shot ! :) im a skier and i had some avalanches last year - amazing experience. Peace

  • What u rush

  • he said "FUCK THIS!!!!!"

  • its a ski-doo

  • if slide was moving any faster you'da had trouble riding it out. glad you made it!

  • thats gotta get the blood flowin nice to see ur still kickin tho

  • thats gotta get the blood flowin

  • looks fun

  • If I saw that fracture, my ass would clinch so tight you wouldn't be able to drive a pin in with a sledgehammer.

  • Comment removed

  • Wow, tahts some crazy shit. ^^

I hope u use a "tracker" or what the duce the english word fore it is. :P The only thing that can save u if u get caught in a avelance is you friends.

  • wow, do you guys ride with avalanche beekers and such?

  • holy shit that must of been scary as fuck

  • Dude on snowmobile was a pretty cool customer. When he saw the slab break up in front of him, he maintained enough speed to float and move off the slab under control, but not so fast that he risked a severe bounce/jump that could cause a spill. Dumb getting caught, but good reaction.

  • @peakman2006 Very good insight, Thats exactly what i did!! As far as being dumb if you had spent the last 40 yrs riding in the mountains more than likely it could of happened to you.

  • @degoetz - Obviously I'm glad you survived, but respectfully disagree with your avalanche assessment. I've back-country skied for 30 years and would NEVER venture onto an obvious avalanche slope without assessing snow stability. Your video clearly shows the wind blowing snow over the ridge top loading this slope. The machine gives you instantaneous speed that a skier cannot command in an avalanche, but if this is all you are counting on for safety, you're safety margin will eventually run out.

  • @peakman2006 It always blows at the highest points and it looked no differn't that it has for the past 35 years.that I have be climbing it. Yes.... with machines you don't always stop and dig a hole to check stability you have to rely on your years personal experience and todays conditions which were the same as the last 4 days of riding.

  • @peakman2006 how is it dumb? it is completely unpredictable and it could happen to anyone...

  • @kasnerc Respectfully, an avalanche is far from "completely unpredictable". Lots of excellent literature and studies excist on the subject. The first minute of video gives three clear clues about the potential of slope instability: wide-open slope at about 35 degrees (this alone is the biggest warning), clearly defined cornice showing prevailing wind, a wind blowing visible snow over the ridge line loading this slope. Watch more avalanche videos, and you'll see how lucky this guy was.

  • @Jangle2007 That is not the point i am trying to get across here. They are very unpredictable for someone who is not looking to find one. This guy was hill climbing on a snowmobile, he clearly was not expecting there to be an avalanche so he was not looking for one. Its as simple as that, he wasn't thinking that there was going to be an avalanche. Therefore he was not "predicting one"

  • @kasnerc OK...so a person riding in avalanche country not expecting an avalanche will, through ignorance and the Darwinian process, remove themselves from the gene pool. Does that sound about right?

  • @Jangle2007 no... its called having balls... he may or may not have thought about it. Maybe he thought it looked safe.

  • @kasnerc "It's called having balls"? Now you're just making Jangle's point. The biggest brassies in the world won't protect you when the white death descends on you.

  • @Nameunavailabletoday Did i say it would save him? No? Your right i didnt. Its the balls he has to go up and do it despite what can happen.

  • @kasnerc You say "balls", I say ignorance. Either way, he's fairly lucky to be alive.

  • @BowToYourHighness Alive LMAO. In what a class 1 avy with three party members right there to dig him out. GET FKN real LOL. LOL LOL he would lived but would been scared shit less.

  • @kasnerc All due respect, man, you're starting to sound like a moron. Why not consider the wisdom of closing your mouth, sitting down, and saying nothing until you've got a more intelligent opinion to share?

  • @peakman2006 wow the wave it made as it went down was crazy. That could have killed you had you not had your head and skills. I hope you have a beacon with you.

  • Awesome video. Check out this one I took the other day.

  • lmao he see's the avalanchh bellow him then he just pins it then he gets up the hill and notices he just started another one LMAO!!

  • you are lucky!!!

  • way to keep a cool head, as soon as he saw the fracture, just pinned er right out of it

  • excellent vid. knowledge is power.

sounds like your xp could use some clutch work, shouldn't be dropping rpm's at turnout. :P

  • "that's what you gotta do, stay on top of it"....most people aren't already going downhill when they get drilled by a wall of snow, lol. nice work man!

  • THAT WAS SO HARDCORE!!!!

  • I would have rode AWAY from it, NOT down it. BUT the end result was (HOPEFULLY) you LEARNED something from this..

  • well you need to accept that, he was already in it when it started and he was facing down, and avalanches are not as bad as they are thought out to be, unless you panick

  • Man you should have dug a pit. And stayed away from that trigger point. But since it happened... good riding, sweet video. Hope your friends have beacons, probes and shovels.

  • ye skillzz :p

  • You are ba lucky man. That would have been it for me for the day...TO THE BAR.....I NEED A DRINK!!!

  • Way to keep your wits, I thought you'd a crank'd it right with the crack below. Been there looking at cracks open up, glad your still riding!!!!

  • skilz!!

  • Look at the rock at :37. That is the trigger point ~ just like they taught us in avanlache class.

  • @plowboys10

does that mean avanlaches fracture at rocks, trees or things sticking out of the snow?

  • @plowboys10 I think it was a tree/brush top at .37. Moreso, there are two slabs that released (very clear at 1.32): the first slab is the one the snow machine released when it carved out the turn at the top of its run, and decellerated downhill, thereby increasing the weight on the snow pack. When the smaller slab under the machine released, it triggered the larger slab up to the ridge cornice on the wind-loaded slope.

  • @plowboys10 I was thinking the exact thing!!! Right when I saw the rock(shallow snow pack), I knew he was in for it. As if that was not enough, he stopped right next to it. Good work on getting out though!

  • wow that was crazy! i would've shit my pants if i saw the snow fracture like that

  • @sk8terhumes12345 i agree i would too

  • sweet shit man

  • New shorts anyone? If you get in an avalanche do what he does. 1.) Don't panic and try to stay with your sled. 2.) If you do get seperated and end up in the wash paddle like you're swimming in water to stay on top. 3.) Pray your beeper is fully charged and your buddies know how to use theirs.

  • your one lucky guy..i'm new at sledding and i would like to know...if you do get in a avalanche what do you do?

  • @livetosled84 drop stop and roll

  • @freerider24100 haha

  • scarry :)

  • God. that gets ur heart pounding just watching that.. even with the helmit cam its like ur the one driving the sled and running (for what could possible ur life) away.

  • fuckin nice man.. what time of year was that? doesnt even look like much snow

  • mid jan 09, lots of snow

  • lol at 1:47 someone sed holy shit lol he got lucky im suprised he did jump it how his sled was

  • Comment removed

  • lucky, what sled, ski doo, what kind?

  • its an xp dude

  • that was awesome

  • that was crazy, ,this is why i dont ride alone anymore.

  • sweet lucky but be safe have fun :P

  • that was scary just watching

  • NICE VIDEO!!!! You are lucky... Be safe out there...

  • Just keep riding those slopes in the warm afternoon sun :-P

  • WICKED!!! like straight out of an action movie man! lol best snowmobile video i seen thus far. U tha man, glad u made it out like a pimp!

  • wow nice video you are lucky. i have rode up there before, awesome country and a heck of a lot of climbing! love it up there you rock man.

  • its called a slab break caused from leward winds ..you r lucky..you will

    eventually get burried..

  • Where is this avalanche at?

  • west central wyoming

  • your lucky my friend you almost bit balls

  • Idaho?

  • wow that was crazy

  • I was caught in an avalanche last winter..... this so brought back memories!!!! SCARRY!!!

  • dude you r freaking crazy you were like on top of the avalache when it broke

  • where is thsi?

  • Was that intentional? Because wasn't that obviously going to happen when he rode a snowmobile across the face of a flat area of snow?

  • It was not intenional, I have made that climb for the last 20 yrs or longer without a slide happenning. On the first time up that face I only go part way up and then turn down, if it hadn't slid I would of gone higher on the second try. the fact that i did turn below my absolute highest point I could of made might of saved my life.

  • thats the way to do it, with a doo, the cat probly woulda racked right out

  • no, it wouldnt even go up that far

  • Insane!

  • AWESOME! now i cant wait fot the winter!

  • YES! Dude u have balls of steel, i dunno much about avalanches but that one was defo movin fast and when you hit that kicker it looked like water!well done !!

  • i was like oh shit GUN IT!!!! lol i was worryed for you man got away with merder

  • dude your nuts lol i thought when i skate i got nuts but you went up a mountain and made an avalanche pruposely and outran it when you can die! nuts!!

  • Shit, I Would love to be there, that looked so cool

  • holy shit

  • tight dude... that was great phootige too. way to ride that shit out. fo sho.. nice xp too ;)

  • by the way nice sled!

  • that would be so fun/scary/exciting/insane

  • I would crap my pants

  • my shorts are brown.....awsome ride.

  • Ho-ly-crap! That Footy is sooo cool!:D I'm glad u came out without anything hurt!:D

  • Holy Crap. That gives me nightmares just looking at it.

  • i love how you turn arround and see the crack and just start hauling ass

  • wow that must have been freaky

  • Intense!! Good Footy!

  • that was fuckin wicked. nice riding.

  • Cool found out about this on the news!

  • holy shit! awesome avalanche dodge! great video!!!!

  • wow, being stupid is so cool!

  • Wow, I bet that was a rush!!!!! Great video. I would've had to change my underwear after that.

  • thats some crazy shit man

  • LoL.. nice

  • Dang dude that was sick!

  • debil

  • been there. after u have done it you can look back on it and say, "wasn't that bad".

before u hit the snow pile at the bottom of the avy did u use your brakes?

  • No, i didn't want to slow down too much in case I would sink in or catch a ski. I just coasted over it.

  • yea same, just your video slowed down. most people loose it when they hit that pile because they hit it to fast and lauch in the air.

  • Lucky! Lucky! Lucky! Glad you made it out!

  • Awsome vid

  • lol i bet that asshole puckered right up

  • I would need to change my pants after that. You're lucky. Seriously, you are one lucky bastard.

  • Whoa. I am not sure if I would be laughing after that. Shitting myself maybe.

  • Nice ridin man, glad ya made it outta there!!

  • Two stroke exhaust lowers IQ

  • Where is this zone? Would like to know what's already slid out.

  • NMFH

  • Hey Bubba, hold my beer and watch this.

  • Is it uncomfortable sledding with that horse shoe in your ass?! Wow dude that was crazy. Nice work getting out of there, will hopefully make you more selective of the slopes you ride on in the future.

  • I'm glad your alive to post this but I agree that it's pretty reckless running up a windloaded face like that and that none of your group that you showed had a shovel on them to dig you out if you didn't out run it. Stay lucky I guess.....

  • Smooth. High-marking on a wind loaded slope.

  • That crack you first see below me is the breaking up of the moving slab. The people watching from below saw the slab break off above me as I was turning down hill. Luckily I started turning before the slab broke or the results would of been alot worse. More luck than still, just be careful out there!!

  • Thanks for the post and glad you're still around to talk about it!

  • You say the fracture line was 20' above you? In the video is looks like it cracks through the small rock feature poking out just below - did it start above and then run throught that feature?

My original thought before reading your post was that it popped around the rock feature. With the current snowpack it seems like shallow depths around features like that one are possible triggers.

  • The bad layer out there will lurk all season long. This guy is so lucky I don't care how experienced he is. But running out of the fall line definitely saved him this time. I hope this encourages more sledders to wear beacons and carry shovels and probes (and know how to use them)

  • pppsssttff thats nothing

  • UNreal skills to get out of that one !! well done, ive learned something tonight!!O_O

  • Nice Video thanks for showing

  • The fracture line was actually 20' above me and I didn't know what was going on behind me and didn,t have the time to look. Before I went up I looked the hill over and decided to come down at an angle to my right (hills left) out of the full fall line. If you look at the very end of the desent to the left you see the slide ahead of me. If i would of come strait down or to the left i would of hit a wall of 10' - 15'. I didn't want to wait the wave out because of not knowing what was behind me.
