The Hollies were a great band but they fall flat here. This is simply not a Hollies-type song. If you are familiar with Judee Sill's version you will instantly hear why her version continues to be definitive. The Hollies just sing this song. Judee Sill feels the song and her sincerity comes through.
@hollies65 You have a right to your opinion -- however, the Sill version was not in the movie because reproduction rights were not granted. Certain artists grant rights for their material to television, motion pictures & commercials -- some do not. Did you ever wonder why certain songs used in commercials & movies are re-recorded by others & the original not used? Hollies -- a far more commercial act -- have songs available for pick up into other media. No matter, Judee Sill's estate got paid.
@lastrada52 Cameron Crowe stated he loved the Hollies version, thus he put it in the movie. look, Judee wrote a great song, The Hollies recorded a great version of said song...I think we can agree that it was nice to hear the song in the film.
@hollies65 I wasn't arguing with you hollies65. Yes, we both can definitely agree it was nice to hear the song in the film & it's also a wonderful recognition from The Hollies to cover it. A credit to Crowe for getting it included. I guess it was just the word "own" that I took exception to. Too powerful & obnoxious for this subject -- leave it in ultimate fighting. I'd like to interpret your post as: "The Hollies had one of the best definitive covers of Judee Sill's song." It's more sincere.
@hollies65 Well then...I guess you & I are among the few who are civil on YouTube -- that;'s to be commended. Yes, I agree, my comment as well -- "fall flat" can be interpreted just as poorly. The important thing: Judee Sill's wonderful song continues to reach as many ears as possible no matter what version it is. So if The Hollies works for you -- that's excellent. For my ears, I need the song to be poignant and not have so many guitars etc...but, just being in the film was a great thing.
@lastrada52 What you need is ottex helps thin out all that ear wax, that is effecting your hearing and killing your brain cells, Judee can only sing in one key.
@evilofisalm If singing in one key means she stinks -- thousands of artists out there should stop their careers now. Including Bob Dylan. I may add then that anyone who can't read or write music should not attempt to compose or sing any songs -- guess the Beatles stink too. You have no point eviliofisalm. What my dirty ears like to listen to have nothing to do with your opinion of who sings in one key and who can't sing at all. Judee wrote it & sang it. That's enough for me. Goodbye.
@evilofisalm BUT those songs never would have been sung if Dylan didn't write & sing them first. A Mariah Carey with all her octaves is like sandpaper to most people. She can't write anything as good or memorable as Sill or Dylan. U just want to be confrontational. Opera singer Rhonda Fleming released a "pop" album last year -- a great real diva & it all stinks. Cocker, Newman, Cohen, (Billie Holiday, Dean Martin, Louis Armstrong) -- can't sing -- yet 50 years later we still listen and BUY.
@lastrada52 Exacftly my point just cause you write a good song it does not mean if someone else covers it that version cant be as good as the original or even better, And this version is produced and sung so much better, your just saying what ive been saying all along? But one point you have wrong, there are a lot of good writers who dont actually sing, they just write, I think Judee should of done the same. But only imho.
@lastrada52 What you need is ottex helps thin out all that ear wax, that is effecting your hearing and killing your brain cells, Judee can only sing in one key. just
This version is alright, but it does not even come close to capturing the true essence of the lyrics or feeling that the writer, Judee Sill, intended for this song. Judee's version is the original and the definitive one. It is a deeply personal song she wrote reflecting on a love affair she had that went bad. Incidentally, the former Hollies lead, Graham Nash, produced Judee's original version in 1971.
@OverlordROA - Judee Sill owns a lot, but I'll give it to the Hollies this time. If anyone had a right to take one of Judee's songs and make it their own it was Graham Nash. They treat it with the respect it deserves and add something special.
@puddleg Of course, Graham Nash had been out of the band for several years by the time The Hollies recorded this song for their Romany album. Lead Singer Allan Clark had also temporarily quit the band by this point in time leaving the window open for Nash replacement and second vocalist Terry Sylvester to move to the front for this wonderful performance.
i love judee sill's music and am less a fan of the hollies, but this is a majestic interpretation that respects the spirit of the original (unlike the hollies' failed run at springsteen's sandy). how this fares vs. the original, i think, is mostly a matter of taste.
Hmmm, Bruce Sprinsteen does not share your view on 'Sandy', He told themin person at the Bottomline how much he liked their version...but you would know better.Heh.
Whether their version of that particular track "fails" is admittedly subjective, based on your take (or mine, or Bruce Springsteen's) on what makes good art. The failure of your ad hominem response ("heh"? really?) isn't subject to those constraints.
Here, let me help you..."heh" was not a ad hominnem response...citing Bruce Springsteen's and my opinion, as opposed to your opinion was said response. "Heh" was merely expressing amusement at your opinion. Hope that helps!
Thanks for putting the video together. I bought the Elizabethtown soundtracks the other day and fell in love with this song. Just did a cross-country roadtrip and pretty much just listened to the two soundtrack disks.
