@ABW941 I saw it not as an argument for serenity as much as a argument for stoicism: Don't appear overexcited, and try to stay calm no matter what happens.
He reads it too fast in my opinion, I want to feel every line not have to gather up to build momentum, there is no need the writing is good enough on its own.

Hate to self promote, but I would really love if some of you guys checked out my poetry and gave me your thoughts. Everything on my channel is written and read by me, personally. I don't have much work up yet, but that will change soon.
He misses the fifth line in the first stanza and changes or adds words such as distant rather than distance, this partially changes the meaning of the poem. Rudyard Kipling was a great and good man who came to hate war and everything about it after the loss of his son, this poem can help all us fathers to love our sons no matter what and value the sons of others. I would add that it is still a very good reading by a great character actor, however I prefer the Harvey Kietel reading.
I've watched this 5 times in a row. Brutal and brilliant!! Your soul remains, Mr. Hopper, your legacy remains!!! The artist, mad and pure and true will always owe you a debt!!!
He's such a great artist, in every way. Dennis Hopper once said, "I think my survival is partially due to genetics. I think it was luck. I think it was attitude that got me through a lot of it. I believe in miracles. It's a miracle that I'm still here." Yeah, he is, in every way. Left behind a legacy of work. God bless his soul.
“You want to hear about insanity? I was found running naked through the jungles in Mexico. At the Mexico City airport, I decided I was in the middle of a movie and walked out on the wing on takeoff. My body... my liver... okay, my brain... went.”
it's a fine poem, can't we just leave it at that? Good lord....no politics, no social arguments, etc....us people always want to tire out everything with endless youtube discussion. I suppose that is the price to be paid for global exposure. Some people are just Sophists I guess.
It's a measure of human strength, resilience and virtue. If you have the qualities it takes to deal with a serious and total loss and pick yourself up and start from wherever you find yourself, then youll have some of the strengths and virtues it takes to be a complete, capable and self sufficient person.
If you have difficulty understanding this . . . maybe some of the necessary qualities are yet to be discovered.
I'm fine with the picking yourself up part. Just wasn't sure why should one risk his all on a single event, how is that a good quality. But you made me think, and I've come up with examples. What's more important, thanks for reminding me about this poem!
I am no expert but I believe RK was not considering or commenting on the moral question of gambling but simply speculating on how we might respond to such a disaster. I think we do well to remember that he lived in different times and the question of gambling may have been viewed totally differently then I may be wrong and would certainly agree that avoiding reckless gambling might also be considered a valuable quality - to be a man my son
Well, I don't think... this is anything to do with economy... but only about man value. I mean if you are able to risk everything and ready to start from the beginning...
This will make you, a person who doesn't need anything, who is self sufficient... a person who should have everything coz He just doesn't care that much to it... and which is more, He'll be a man..
Bravo!

I dont really like it in its entirety, it is a little bit too buddhistic in its philosophy.
I like the part about not giving up, but not the whole thing about treating everything the same way, no matter if you win or lose.
Serenity is not a virtue.

@czechreck As a Catholic this is my night-time prayer as well. One of a few but it's there.
In addition I think this is so much better than another performance of Hopper's on YouTube - he sounds SO stoned on the other one.

This poem was taught to students in my High School class.
Since then, the "school of life" keeps reminding me that I need to
have the fortitude of the strongest man to overcome the challenges mentioned
in this everylasting poetic masterpiece. I can almost hear
my mother say ..."and you will be a woman, my daugter!'
Thank you for this timely video!
