  • Guys, Get Over The 'octopus' Thing ;A;

  • I'm in that Ellen part of youtube again. Does anyone know the way to the exit? I've been here for several hours and my tummy hurts from laughing.

  • Okay, i'm chinese and i use the octopus card when i go back. That joke was actually funny. Those who take offense in that joke are too serious. obviously, if they only say OCTOPUS, i'm not going to think the octopus card, imma just laugh my ass off. It's not even an offensive joke, it's just a joke of a sign that was missing a word that would totally clear up the misunderstanding.

  • if u hear closely at 1:33 you can hear ellen burp/fart

  • @omnomcuttherope She was clearing her throat. -.-

  • In chinese, the word octopus translates to "Baat Daat Tong" In which "Baat Daat" is a phrase similar to "Everywhere", and "Tong" has various meanings, here it means "Useful", just saying.

  • Lol, I'm from Hong Kong and thats everywhere, it's like a credit card, except, you put money in the card and the machine take the require money out, but lol :) But I don't like my octopus card cuz its any ugly rainbow color :P

  • octopus is a card!!!!!

  • What it means by octopus is that in china/hong kong, octopus is the name of the card that contains money in it, like a credit card.

  • 1:22 LOLLL.

  • Comment removed

  • Octopus Card better than Credit Cards

  • LOL, for those people who don't know what octopus is, it's a card that you can put money in, and you use it ALOT in places like Hong Kong.

  • I went to HK last Summer, if I didnt I probably wouldnt know what it was .

I thought the man bending over in the background was the speedo guy's penis.

Real mature -.- seriously u guys I'm from hong kong too and who ever sent that pic in was probably bored or had no life so they found that pic online or sum crap ... Obviously they don't have that card in USA ... Duh so my point is: 1) Asians , stop gettin butt hurt bout it...2) Americans stop fighting with us... Ur

  • @Dimoandgirl98 i agree that it's stupid but u can't tell ppl what to feel hurt about. u don't have the right to say what ppl should care or not care about. just sayin :)

    and p.s. im 11

  • Ellen... An "octopus" is a card (kinda like a debit card) that u put on this machine and it takes ur money from that... It's used in hong kong china, that's why in Chinese it says it there... So there's nothing wrong with this picture

  • wow

  • That last picture was priceless!

  • damn i only brought squid

  • 0:15 ellens so cute:)

  • Gotta Love Ellen :D

  • damn i only brought squid.

  • i don't understand some of you...

some of us living in hong kong just wanted to explain what an octopus card was...

    1) We know it's a joke you idiots... 2) most of us just kindly explained, the ones who pointed it out were not the slightest bit angry 3) did we get angry when we explained? No.

I don't understand you people who keep saying, "IT WAS A JOKE". We know it was a joke... thats why people were laughing, we just explained what an octopus card was... =-=

  • I think some people in the comments should calm their tits. The octopus thing was humorous, it did make me giggle but I didn't feel that it was insulting or ignorant to anyone's culture. Just because we end up finding something amusing before we do some extensive research on it does not make someone ignorant. Anyways , I'm sure everyone that read the comments are now aware of what an Octopus card or Oyster card is, so please - relax.

  • Arm-wrestling...? masturbating...

  • Modern-day society is lacking humour. Blah blah blah. Take a chill pill 'octopus people'! You made your point. It's funny anyway.

  • I don't get why so many Chinese people are butthurt over the Octopus joke. I'm from Hong Kong, I know what the Octopus is, but seriously, even as a tourist that makes no sense. If it wrote "card" at the end it'd make sense.

The over-sensitivity over a joke that wasn't even meant to offend is kind of really sad.

  • @pokieeuge

Im from Hk to and its relly annoying how people dont get what an octopus card is, no offence ellen but its what people use to pay, its name might be funny but we dont all have fancy credit cards like u americans.

  • @Randomness1234561000 They don't even have fancy cards, what the hell are you talking about?

She's made jokes about a Thai name, English failures from the states and silly stuff from Canada and so much more, all in good jest. The objectivity of itself is funny, not the subject of it, and that's exactly what I find is so sad about how sensitive people are.

  • @pokieeuge It's called an octopus card. Look it up. I'm from Hong Kong and I obviously know what an octopus is. What's so funny about the 'octopus' card? It clearly said octopus card in Chinese. If you were from Hong Kong, you would've known what it actually meant.

  • @Gameplayers08 I'm not sure if you are incapable of reading my post or something, but re-read it. I specifically said, "I'm from Hong Kong, I know what the Octopus is...". And do you think Ellen, or most Caucasian people know how to read Chinese? Really?

It's funny because, in English, it literally meant, using a sea creature. If you knew English, you'd:

    1. Know that I'm from Hong Kong as I stated that in my post that you're replying to.

    2. Get the rational of the humor in the translation.

  • @Gameplayers08 Lol you fail in English comprehension and reading skills.

  • Anyone notice 1:07 sign is photoshoped?

  • @strawberrysmarts it's a joke, to show how stupid the previous picture with the gumballs and the bouncing balls is ;P

  • @strawberrysmarts Yeah, it's a joke.

  • @strawberrysmarts it was a joke

  • "well as long as they warn ya" rofl

  • i am disappointed that ellen decided to show the "octopus" joke.

are the writers/viewer sending in the picture discriminating people who can read Chinese?

would this be as funny when tourists go to London and realize they couldnt travel conveniently on the subway because they didnt have an "oyster"?!

even if this is a joke, there should be some cultural sensitivity to it.

  • @dbtreal It's a card. Dear lord, I didn't know other Hong Kong people were so sensitive about the tiniest little thing.

Even as a tourist, that sign is terrible. Who knows what Octopus is? If it said Octopus CARD that'd make more sense.

There's cultural sensitivity for things that MATTER, this is poorly translated sign for tourists who are probably unaware of what Octopus even is, and it's sad that so many people are so over sensitive about this light hearted joke.

  • u know, octopus is a card used in hong kong right?

  • DANGIT. I was doing homework but then....

  • I went to a buffet for my tenth b-day

  • Alot of the photos that people send in are just pictures they found from the internet. :I

  • I think we've had enough explanations of what an octopus is. The point has been made.

  • If this lasts for more than 4 hrs. you might want to see the doctor or join the circus..... LOLOL

  • 0:17you won't laugh if your chinese or HK

  • Comment removed

  • Just after I thought I found them all, five more appear!

  • i dont get that pic at 1:17

  • @JLPrindle LAWL its the guy is like that so it looks like he is the dick

  • @JLPrindle it looks like he has a human dick

  • ellen u are making me stay up its 6 am and i leave for school at 6:30 am >:(

  • The Octopus thing was not a typo. It's, as people below have said, is a card.

  • Explaining further on the Octopus thing...

\An Octopus is a card that you can plug money in. They call it an Octopus because you can do many things with them and go to many places. (You can use it in stores, for buses, trains, restaurants, etc.) Just like how an octopus has many legs.

  • @TheSprinkleSparkles An octopus has tentacles. Not legs.

  • @TheSprinkleSparkles so like an oyster card in london?(england)

  • @TheRandomationStudio Yeah, I would say.

  • Octopus is the equivalent of an oyster card....

  • im supposed to be doing my hw.. i guess i have to wake p early... wait i can't because of ellen. BUT I LOVE HER SHOWS i'll do it 2morrow

  • ellen the octopus is not funny. it is a kind of way in hong kong to pay!!!!!!!!

i am albert nine years old!!!!!!!!! i love your show i wish you can go to san francisco and that is where i live !!!!!!!!!!! i love ur show!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • damn i only brought squid =))

  • the Chinese actually says "Only cash and #8 credit Card accepted" the english of. that credit card company is probably the "Octopus" krypt0nte83 was talking about

  • In Hong Kong, there's a public payment card called Octopus. So the jokes on you Ellen!

  • Thumbs if u saw the one with the little kid and his dad on smosh.com!!

  • I live in Hong Kong. I always have an Octopus in my purse!!!!

  • 1:30 to 1:34 i think i heard gas

  • Comment removed

  • The snake one was a joke from ellen

  • @coffeefield Thanks for clearing that up. I'm Chinese btw, so I wasn't necessarily enraged by the photo, but I wasn't beaming with happiness either haha.

  • @coffeefield that may be the case, but i'm sure you could understand the confusion of someone seeing this sign in person, for the first time.

  • @coffeefield what's funny is the person who submitted the photo must have known this, as they would most likely be living in hong kong...

  • @coffeefield you can make fun of something and know what it is...and it's funny either way just the fact it's called octopus

  • @coffeefield it was a joke!

  • @monicaredmond1997 1) i know it's a joke =-= 2) I don't like your tone 3) I was not angry

    4) i just explained the facts

  • @coffeefield 1.) how do i have a tone, when you cant even hear me. 2.) i never said you where angry. and 3.) i know, i was stating the obvious

  • @coffeefield It was a joke. Very misinformed, but still funny. They laugh at the fact that it's seemingly so random. Not going out of their wat to ridicule it or anything.

  • @coffeefield well its an american show and theyre not gonna research some little sign

  • @daniel30765 thats true but... this is just an example. If there was a chinese talk show that was really funny and they started to laugh at something from america they didn't understand. Americans would get very angry that they laughed at there things... I think it's fair that we get to get a bit annoyed too :)

  • @coffeefield its a joke. get over it!

  • i imagine the gumball and bouncing ball warning is so kids don't put the bouncing balls in their mouth.

  • EVERYONE PLEASE NOTE: In the first picture it says octopus because (In hong kong) Octopus is litterally like a credit card. Which kids can have too, just add money into it and it's yours to use. It can be used in grocery's, Cabs etc.

  • I don't like how some of these are blatantly fake and they still make it on the show. like the snake one

  • @Ember121Scorpio thats the idea with the snake one...they are mocking the gumball/bouncy ball one

  • Yep, People down below are correct. Octopus is a pass for for public transport in HK, similiar to what we use in the UK (Oyster) but Octopus can also be used on vending machines :)

  • I'm pretty positive I heard a fart after that cough thing..

    1:32

  • @csmorrison lol yeah

  • no at 0:13 some one snezz

  • 1:28 LOOOOOL !!!

  • At 1:23 you can hear a weird crazy laugh if you listen closely :P

  • lol the last one

  • Octopus is a MTR Pass, I have one, I live in Hong Kong. LOL I also thought it was normal.

  • Yeah I live in HK as well, Octopus is just like a subway pass or something :)

  • The last one was funny

  • hello I'm a 11 year old girl and i like to sing can u look at my videos and tell me what u think :D thx

  • "Damn i only bout squid can you belive that" lol

  • Shutup drainspout!

  • I live in Hong Kong and an octopus is a kind of card that you can use to pay with :))

  • @KatieSwift17 I live in HK too, so when they all laughed I just went "Wait, there's nothing wrong with that."

  • @KatieSwift17 this is at least polite!

  • @KatieSwift17 yeah, I go to Hong Kong every summer and I use an octopus for the subway train!

  • Comment removed

  • HAHA Regarding that "octopus" only picture, I think it's because in HONG KONG, their transport (metro/subway) card is called an "Octopus card", NO KIDDING, you can use that thing ANYWHERE in Hong Kong! You can use it to buy fries at McDonalds, to buy things at the supermarket, all that. So I'm thinking that chinese restaurant may have bought their 'cash only' sign from Hong Kong... & didn't realize there aren't octopus cards in America?

  • I love Ellen!!!!!!!!

  • octopus is like a debit card okay?

  • Wow the chinese part was rasist the octopus is a credit card to get on barts and more. Cause in china, They didnt have chase and stuff like that. Thumbs up if yhu agree!

  • @xXLillian123 How was it racist?? It is perfectly understandable that someone would first think of the sea creature when they see octopus and are unaware of that card. Now, it WOULD have been inappropriate & racist if there was about bringing a cat or something....

  • 0:29 I was more concerned with the dads purse then the hand...

  • Lol yeah, you guys. Octopus is what they call the cards in Hong Kong.

  • Octopus is a card actually

  • octopus is like a credit card in hongkong what it does it has money and you just beep it likethe new press and go card

  • it's actually called octopus everywhere in Hongkong

  • lol this was posted on my birthday!!

  • 0:42 yeah..umm the dad is also wearing a purse...bet no one saw that lol

  • @LoveMEorNOT96 ididnt see it!?

  • @LoveMEorNOT96 Is it a purse or camera?

  • lol ellen is not trying to insult people in hong kong! she doesnt know and if you saw something like that and didnt know what it was you would laugh too, relax people

  • Wasn't the last photo on Vsauce?

  • I travel to HK a lot and first I saw these signs I was like WTF? then im used to it and its not funny anymore

  • is it me or is the camera shaking after that last photo was shown? xD

  • Octupus is the name of a card used for buses and MTR in Hong Kong. Nothing is wrong with the first photo and it is normal and we see it everyday Ellen is insulting HK people. Go HK people! Ellen is ignorant. We, Hong Kong, people rock !!!!

  • @1pianoblue aww come on..

  • @1pianoblue she's not really.. she's probably just not from hong kong? calm down. she's a comedian.

  • Octopus is really the name of a card...

  • when we visited Hong Kong we were also wondering what the hell does Octopus should mean? But then my aunt who works there gets us a visitors octopus card then we realize what it's for. I bought a sandwich in Disneyland using it LOL

  • Us hong kongers find nothing wrong with that first one, tough I can see how it would be funny

  • theres nothing wrong with the first photo, in fact its totally normal and we see it everyday in hong kong -.-

  • Octopus in Hong Kong is a card where you can pay. Gesse go on wiki.... (although I live in hong kong)
