  • Lovely song and sound your friend, Linda

  • @ukulelelov3r dude your mum and aunt look like guys lol

  • the children sitting next to him during the vid are not his sons, daughters, whatever. they are not boys. They are girls. pretty sure i would know as one of them is my mum and one is my auntie.

  • honey you could sing me the trash is coming and I'd love it...but your songs mean so much to so many people... isn't that cool? Do you love it? I do... and I think you are awesome for bringing so much meaning to so many people's lives....as I take a walk away... the only thing I have to say is.... um... do you care?

  • only he can make country sound so cool

  • Such a great song, and an unbelievable artist..

  • for geraldine

  • thanks for uploading this song!!!!!!!

heard it as a child...there was a thin memory of this song ......very little i remembered.........but used to hymn it

P.S that in India it was really impossible to find these songs

........but i did had back then in 86 and i used to sing it as well!!!!!!!

    thanks again!

  • It is 2 my best friend in KB Copenhagen Keith Lemmon

  • I love this song but allways makes me cry!!

  • Not the greatest singer in the world. He wrote great songs and sang them for other singers to buy and sing. George Jones sang this better then anyone else could do, it was written for him.

  • @billyg864 That would be debasing him. He is a singer, and quite a good one, in his own right.

I don't know much about George Jones, but Elvis Costello's singing is quite good. You might just prefer the other one.

This is more of a folk/country feeling than Elvis Costello generally uses.

  • Think a lot of you miss the point. elvis has written many songs that have been covered by others including Prince. He is a song writer and a bloody good on at that!!!

  • i find this video kind of sinister, like sproutes, whats with the two boys in football gear, elvis your not a priest, fantastic song tho

  • love it ..... xxxxx

  • awesome

  • Why were the two lads sat by his side looking scared?

  • @adecart42 They are not "lads" mate! They are his 2 FemBots who guard him from all danger, willingly to self destruct for their fine Master Elvis.

  • Classic........Stood the test of time

  • legend. elvis dodged a bullet with dear Bebe\

  • pretty sure thats the same guitar that johnny marr used on william is was realy nothing with the smiths on top of the pops

  • makes the hairs stand up on the back of my neck.

  • This version beats George Jones version any day,Elvis version is miles better

  • flippin fluffin hell how can anyone not like this, you must be imune to greatness

  • I love Elvis but some old classics should just be left alone because they can't be improved upon. Only George Jones' voice can do justice to a song this sad.

  • @Pats59Rule Actually,I thought the Counting Crows did an even better cover of it than Elvis Costello did.

  • A great song. Reminds me the grass needs cut. Are you out there.......Qualcast??

  • This brilliant song was written by Gerry Chestnut, a true story I think

  • This song was written by Gerry Chestnut but a hit for George jones before Elvis Costello

  • One of the best songs i have ever heard, super words super music

  • One of the best songs i have ever heard, super words super music

  • A great song. Reminds me of you Isobel .... if you are out there ??

  • A great song. Reminds of you Isobel .... if you are out there ??

  • A new deminsion to Elvis, who is already very cool. George Jones was a part of my growing up and I'm sure approves.

  • Very good job Elvis. Always liked your work but this brings a new deminsion to you...All good. George Jones was a large part of my growing up. George I'm sure approves :-))))

  • Prob. my fav Elvis C song...nice quiet guy Elvis..and he loved my quiche when I was a chef in the Kings Arms Chelsea ! Pub's not there anymore Bryan Adams bought the whole massive building and shut it down...shame.

  • Elvis has this tune down to Jerry Chesnut on his website. Did he do a version of it himself?

  • I love Elvis Costello,especailly SHE

  • you should thank me elvis mate..x

  • you should thank me elvis mate..x

  • Does anyone remember what cassette copulation that this song was on?? I think it was "Solid Gold Country" Or something like it. All I can remember was that this song was on it. I would like to find out for the other songs that was also in them

  • How many millions of meaningless Valentine cards and messages are sent and this great track has just over 94,000 hits ... ah it's great to be in the minority fellow Elvis C fans ...

  • Isn't that the acoustic guitar Johnny Marr uses on the William It was Really Nothing performance?

  • crannberry7

  • Cool that he got his sons in the vid.

  • tear jerker

  • Sad song. Love it. Lovely lyrics. xxx Miss U baby. Love from you was all my dreams come true xxx thank you stunner. Wonder if you realise how much I am still in love with you. xxx

  • Such a great songwriter....

  • Wow...Love this song and even greater to have just found the video for it!....Elvis ROCKS!

  • What a heartbreaking song. The second verse in particular actually brings a tear to my eye. Excellent rendition, though, great song.

  • its not like george jones wrote it, he just recorded it first

  • very bad get a life

  • eagles woman on my mind

  • Okeydoke, maybe not an original but our elv sure gives it a damn good bash. Saw him live in concert on the box recently & 30 yrs on he still has that strange combination of a husky yet velvet tone to his voice. I could listen to this song till the cows come home...sad & poignant but overall incredibly soothing. Why is he so underrated? Someone please enlighten me!

  • Perfect...ok not an original tune but my god doesnt our elv give it a damn good bash. Saw him live recently & his voice is just as velvet as it was 30 yrs ago when i first discovered the maestro. But please would someone explain why he is so underestimated. Enlightenment would be appreciated....

  • Perfection personified...okeydoke, not the original rendition of "Roses" but a bloody good bash. I for one cannot fault it...our elv has a unique style of his own & having heard him in concert, live, he is top notch. As for his being underestimated...i am mystified...can anyone enlighten me?

  • Beautiful song, i believe elvis to be chronically underrated...but doesnt he bash out some lovely tunes? saw him live (on the box) a few days back & his voice is just as gorgeous & pitch-perfect as it was 20/30 yrs ago.

  • This is one of my faves...elvis is sadly underrated but my god does he not bash out some top tunes. Correct me if i am wrong but i think he's TOP DOG.

  • Thanks, love this song

  • I can't believe what soldier has written. Elvis wrote this song - you richard notbody

  • Brilliant................come and do my wifes 50th in Jan 2011

  • This is the best version of this song i've ever heard!

Apart from all that, its a great tune : )

  • one of those kids looks like a young queen elizabeth and the other robbie fowler

  • nicee

  • Beautiful. Great background singing an slide guitar. They didn't have a piano at the photo shoot so Steve Nieve is playing violin or fiddle. Hilarious.

  • sarcasm and good music that"s costello"s way like this

  • stupid

  • straight tio my favs,, a true sing along song...

  • Love it, love it, love it...

  • His best song in my opinion ...

  • The song was written by Jerry Chesnut.

  • That's weird he really has twins now.......the Universe is a crazy bitch sometimes

  • I love the dour little boys swaying next to him and mouthing the background singers. Lovely song (in the great tradition of mawkish country goodbye songs), and Elvis does it with great style.

  • absolutely amazing

  • EC version of this classic is the best and so eclectic...the two young GIRLS do a great job in adding to this classic...CaitlinSquarepantsx you should be so proud that your Mum and Aunt got to be part of such an iconic song!!

  • I listen to this song almost everyday day...EC nails this song...and by the way who could mistake the two girls as boys!!...go and get your eyes checked!!

  • Ehem TheAnthony236 & ukrabbiter....

First of all, yes - they are not related to Elvis Costello, but they are NOT boys.

And i know this for certain because one of them is my mother and the other is my auntie.

  • @xCaitlinSquarepantsx yeah that's a great bullshit story

  • @xCaitlinSquarepantsx Joanna or Claire???

  • @xCaitlinSquarepantsx This a 1985 video, so these girls couldn't be your mom and aunt, unless you are 10 years old.

  • @soldieroflove68

I didnt know that he wrote the song bu tthanks you for ever. a good song for one sad unhappy marriage

  • It's a Elvis Costello tune that the great George Jones covered.

  • @stilwellx George did it a little over 10 years before Costello did.

  • @circlesky73 so what? all good songs get covered even on x factor!

  • This is an old George Jones song. Elvis is pretty much doing the Jones arrangement... which is cool.
